Maybe I'm not in the right stage of my life to read a book like this, maybe I'm not at the right age, maybe I just won't ever like it. But I'm not going to lie I'm pretty devastated that I didn't like this book. Markus Zusak is my favorite author, the book theif was my favorite book and maybe I had my hopes set way way too high when I started this book. From the second I started it I knew I wasn't going to love it, I just couldn't get into the story. I didn't have any relationship with the characters which is not like me. I didn't like the writing style which really surprised me. I don't know what happened but I just didn't like it. I don't regret buying it though, it's just part of my journey as a reader. I hope the rest of you love this book. I really do. Maybe I'll try again one day when I'm in a different place in my life.

I couldn't wait to read Bridge of Clay after reading The Book Thief. As I turned the page in Bridge of Clay I thought hummm I must have missed something. The storytellers random thoughts or just added phrases or words seemed misplaced but I kept on reading. The book demands attention! It's a family saga full of love, anger, heartbreak, failure and accomplishment. Clay is the bridge. I loved it and finished with tears in my eyes.

I absolutely loved Zusak’s previous books I am the Messenger and The Book Thief and couldn’t wait to read this one. Unfortunately, I was disappointed in Bridge of Clay. Though there were several very powerful scenes in the book, the writing style often made it difficult for me to follow the story and it never really flowed comfortably for me. Perhaps it’s just my limited intellect but when I turned the last page I felt like I had probably missed some critical plot elements in the book.

The Book Thief is in my top 5 favorite books of all time. Markus Zusak has an amazing way of bringing his characters to life in such a way that they stay with me, long after the book is over. Bridge of Clay took years and years for Markus to write, which is quite an inspirational story in and of itself. While reading Bridge, I appreciated each detail of his writing because I knew how intentional it was for him. These five Dunbar brothers and their story is one that will stay with me. The writing of their tale is woven together so masterfully, poetically, gingerly. The story does not begin at the beginning--it begins in the present, which is the end; and then it goes back in time to the beginning. It's difficult to figure the timing out at first, but keep reading. The words drew me in and once I was in, I didn't want the story to end. I also tried to predict how Markus would tie all the pieces together at the end, as he did so masterfully in Book Thief. Bridge of Clay did not disappoint. The book ends back at the beginning. The circular way of writing adds layer upon layer to the characters and their dynamic relationship. The writing shows the complexity of these five Dunbar boys, but you will love them! I already want to read it again.

I bought this book because of rave reviews and because "The Book Thief" was absolutely great. But after 70 pages when I couldn't figure out what the story line was about, I quit. It is one of the most confusing novels I have ever attempted to read.

Five Dunbar boys, the eldest was Matthew (who narrated the story), the fourth was Clay, who seemed to be the most sensitive and socially aware. The youngest was Tommy with Henry and Rory somewhere in between. They lived at 18 Archer Street in the suburbs of Sydney, where Matthew took over the job of caring for his brothers after their mother died and six months later their father left without a word. Their struggles were many, their ways of grieving all different.Bridge of Clay tells of tragedy and loss; of heartache and hope; and insecurities, not just in the five boys but in their father as well. Clay would be the one to build a bridge – but was it a bricks and mortar bridge, or a metaphorical bridge? As we learn of life before the five Dunbar boys were born; of Michael’s early life, and Penny’s as well, we get to know their individual likes and dislikes; their hopes for the future. It was Penny who said she’d like five children, but Michael who said, let them not all be boys!I struggled initially with Bridge of Clay – the writing confused me, and I couldn’t get into the flow of the story. I put it aside for a few days, then picked it up again today. Straight away I was into the lives of the Dunbar boys, and couldn’t put it down, and although it jumps around, it’s easy to catch the links. The publisher’s words best sum it up – “Here is a story told inside out and back to front.” Aussie author Markus Zusak has had Bridge of Clay coming for our reading pleasure for some years now – I’m glad it’s finally here. Recommended. (make sure you have tissues at the ready!)

I've been waiting a loooong time for a new Markus Zusak book, and was so excited to read 'Bridge of Clay'... now I'm not going to lie, it started off a bit slow, and the writing style threw me off at first. But after the first few chapters, you pick up how it's supposed to flow. By the 4th chapter - I couldn't put it down... and by the end I was crying and in love. It's absolutely worth the time to get to know the 'boys'... and 'Bridge of Clay' unfolds into an an amazingly emotional and fulfilling read. Highly recommend!

I really wanted to like this book as I loved Markus Zusak’s The Book Thief but I’m sorry to say it was impossible. Bridge of Clay was impossible for me to finish. I forced myself to stay with it but by the halfway mark I began to skip pages in hope of finding some sense to the story. I really couldn’t follow the way this story is told. To me it was disjointed and confusing. I felt the author tried too hard. The locations were hard to understand and the characters just never come to life. The timeline is all over the place. There was never a point at which I began to care about these people. Too often it was if the author lost his way and his line of thought resulting in a bunch of half explored events. When I first looked through this book my first thought was to return it. I went as far as requesting a return shipping label. I should have gone with my first impression. I’m sorry to say I was unable to finish the book. I could not recommend it.

This is masterful visual storytelling. The fantasy world is rich and exciting, each page is littered with interesting critters and gorgeous vistas--you can tell the artist delighted in these creative flourishes. The plot picks up quickly, doesn't give you much time to get oriented, and sweeps you along through a tight-paced read that makes the book difficult to put down. I read it in 2 sittings, and even that would have been one if I hadn't had to go adult. The words, "Tiger Queen" were enough to sell me, but add to that not one but TWO compelling female protagonists who aren't hyper-sexualized, and not relegated to being window-dressing for a less competent male's heroism, and you've got yourself a unique read especially guaranteed to delight a female or YA audience. I loved that Rook is not fetishized, wears appropriate armor, and has a realistic skill-set.This title feels like one of those books you can read and re-read and still discover new hidden content each time; I look forward to having my lingering questions (hopefully) answered in upcoming volumes!

Well the first thing is that I could look at the art in here all day. Karl Kerschl and MSASSYK do an incredible job of creating a beautiful, colorful, immersive world. A+ work. Now the story in here is interesting. It's the kind of style where you're dropped in to another world without any explanation and have to figure it out as you go. I generally like that style, though I think some things could use a bit more explanation. Words are used regularly that you dont get any understanding of until much later, and even the sound effects are even written in a made-up language. It's kind of like exploring a new world. I can't wait for the next one!

From the start the reader will notice this has its own quirky flavor of beauty. The plot is mouthwateringly mysterious, but not unable to follow.Unlike other graphic novels that use semi interesting art to convey important dialogue and info, Isola never wastes a single panel. The only words in this novel have been stripped to the bare bones. Imaginary curse words and incredible typography accurately convey onomatopoeia.Every image is worthy of its own space in a gallery.Comparisons will be made to anime and other media. But I don’t feel that is necessary. Isola quickly creates a world unlike one you’ve ever conceived, then immediately makes you fall in heart shattering love with it.The next volume will be downloaded immediately

The story is a little too trippy for me- you're thrown into a world of seemingly complex magical systems during a war, yet nothing is quickly explained.BUTThe art is pretty awesome. If you like weird, warrior women, and not knowing what's going on, this is for you.

The artwork is stunning and the story teased at a world that I want to know more about. I can't wait to see what questions they answer in the next volume.

The artwork is brilliant, incredibly well drawn and designed and the color palette is gorgeous. The story is intriguing (I don’t want to give anything away), but if you like western fantasy with a hint of Miyazaki you’ll enjoy this.

Love the art and the storytelling. It’s an intriguing story, I’m looking forward to read de next one.

An intriguing beginning to a new series.

CATALOGING FOR SCHOOL LIBRARIANS

Review

This book should be in every school library, read by every person who manages the local catalog, and kept nearby as a handy reference. (School Library Connection)Cataloging for School Librarians is a great example of a school library cataloging textbook. The references Kelsey makes to historical figures who have contributed to the development of bibliographic documentation and classification (including Melville Dewey and Minnie Sears) are nice additions that help provide context to the reasons why we use the Dewey Decimal Classification and Sears List of Subject Headings today. (Technicalities)This highly comprehensive volume covers the subject in great depth, illustrating the encyclopedic knowledge of the author. Marie Kelsey is a well-recognized authority in this field and has placed much of her knowledge within the covers of this book. . . .This volume surely deserves a place in library training departments and possibly some larger Schools Library Services with a training and advisory role. (The School Librarian)Cataloging for School Librarians is a very practical guide, written in a straight-forward, conversational tone, for real-world application. The comparisons of AACR2 with RDA are invaluable. This book provides the necessary practical learning, but also challenges readers to think about the reasons behind the decisions with the ‘Test your critical thinking’ questions. Reminding me of the tag line, ‘Thinking like a historian,’ which is common in school social studies instruction, here, the challenge is ‘Thinking like a cataloger!’ The variety of practice questions at the ends of different chapters keeps the learning from becoming ‘same-old, same-old’ as the reader works through the text. (JoAnne Tiedemann, District Cataloging Librarian/Media Specialist, Madison Metropolitan School District, Wisconsin)Cataloging for School Librarians presents the theory and practice of cataloging and classification to students and practitioners needing a clear sequential process to help them overcome cataloging anxiety. With the instructions in this book, the new cataloger will become proficient at creating bibliographic records that meet current national standards and at making library materials accessible to students and faculty. It covers AACR2, RDA, FRBR, Sears, and the Dewey Decimal Classification and presents numerous examples of how to catalog books, nonprint, and electronic library materials using the MARC format. To reinforce learning, each chapter concludes with a review quiz and a critical-thinking question. Cataloging for School Librarians includes a glossary and an index.

From the Author

Getting the job done is exactly what my goal for this book was when I wrote it. For fifteen years I taught cataloging in the classroom and to distance students studying to be school librarians. Never finding an adequate textbook, I had to write each lesson myself in order to convey basic concepts in an organized fashion. Those lessons have been transformed into this book. It covers both theory (why) and practice (how) of all steps in cataloging both print and non-print materials typically found in a school library. If you have been looking for a textbook that enlightens rather than baffles your students, this book could well be the answer. I know these lessons work because I have used them repeatedly. Please contact the publisher for a review copy soon! Best of luck in teaching your next cataloging course! Marie Kelsey, Ph.D., University of Wisconsin, Madison.

Very detailed read. I had to have this for one of my college classes.

Great for what it needs to do, but it could use some updating.

arrived as promised. will do business again

It has a lot of good info, but it also often points out things that a school librarian doesn't need to know. I would rather it skip these topics or just share the information - don't just say I won't need to know this.

I purchased the Kindle version. There are no page numbers given. This is extremely frustrating when the professor asks you to complete the assignment on page 43 and I have to go and manually count pages.

Yes, I had to buy this for a not so fun class. However, my complaint is that there are many MISTAKES! Like page 111, Table 8.2 should have $a before Myers, Walter Dean and before The blues of Flats Brown, for example. The book is about cataloging, which is all about DETAILS! So get the DETAILS right!

Got the book in great condition!

Like any other college textbook... Nothing to jump up and shout about, but got the job done

Review

"Succinctly and persuasively debunks the arguments that have contributed to privacy's demise, including the canard that if you have nothing to hide, you have nothing to fear from surveillance."—David Cole, New York Review of Books"[A] thought-provoking, accessible introduction to privacy and security law."—J.M. Keller, Choice"A very timely and thought provoking book."—Raymond G. Kessler, The Law and Politics Book Review“Nothing to Hide is a potent and sobering tonic that provides an invaluable antidote to the sort of panicked rhetoric that makes privacy and civil liberties into antiquated relics at best, handmaidens of al Qaeda at worst.”—The Daily"Incidents that raise questions about online security and privacy rights are a common occurrence. Books about these issues are equally plentiful, but none that I have seen addresses the issue in more detail or with greater insight than this work by Daniel Solove."—Mayer Nudell, Security Management"Daniel Solove takes on the two biggest challenges to privacy in the twenty-first century:  the rapid development of technology that gives the government the ability to track our decisions, choices, discussions, and movements in real time; and the threat of catastrophic terrorist attacks, which demand increased security measures.  In clear, measured prose, Solove shows how the law of privacy has failed us in addressing these twin challenges, and proposes an innovative way forward."—David Cole, Georgetown University Law School“The Information Age has turned our notions of privacy upside down.  Solove is our smartest thinker on what privacy means today, and "Nothing to Hide" definitely refutes old ideas about privacy and replaces them with ones that work in the world of data brokers, Facebook, and Wikileaks.  The debate will never be the same after this book.”—Bruce Schneier, author of Applied Cryptography“Daniel Solove is one of America's leading experts on privacy law. In this engaging book, he explains why privacy is everyone's concern; it is a crucial social value that must be integrated into our national security policy rather than simply balanced against it.”—Jack M. Balkin, Yale Law School"Bravo Daniel Solove! In Nothing to Hide he skillfully dispels many of the myths associated with the faulty zero-sum tradeoff between privacy vs. security. In exposing the flawed logic of having to forego one interest in order to secure another, Daniel Solove has done us all a great service."— Dr. Ann Cavoukian, Information and Privacy Commissioner, Ontario, Canada

Most of us have wondered how well the law protects our privacy, given the rapid pace at which new technologies have emerged over the past few decades. Daniel J. Solove is a law professor who clearly understands privacy law, and its implications (and shortcomings) regarding the Internet. He is, without a doubt, one of the best writers we have on the subject. His writing style is lucid, easy-to-read, and free of legal jargon.Privacy is a big issue online these days, but I don't think the era of Facebook, Google, and iPhones is going to be rolled back any time soon. It shouldn't be, and we shouldn't exhaust ourselves demanding that the companies behind these products respect our privacy. The forward march of technology might be inevitable, but the erosion of how well the law affords privacy protection for each citizen's online activity is far from deterministic. We can still work to enact legislation that will protect all of us. And I'd argue that we should.Daniel Solove has written a brilliant introductory guide to this area of the law. I'd recommend this book to anyone interested in online privacy law. If you've ever been even remotely curious about your rights regarding your own digital footprints, buy it now.

Disclosures: I do not know the author, I have no financial stake in this book, I did buy it on Amazon. I successfully used this book in my graduate class on law and policy. Anyone who is interested in partaking in today's discussion on security and surveillance would be well advised to read this book. Its biggest asset is that it presents a balanced view of the issues. You can then make up your own mind.

Solove has done it again: a fascinating and important work on privacy and national security that leaves no stone unturned and grips the reader with laugh-our-loud moments. Nothing to Hide highlights the stakes in our national security agenda with serious insight and deep analysis. Solove takes apart the arguments and assumptions animating current surveillance efforts, and in a story-telling style, helps us appreciate the full range of their costs and benefits. Solove gives us a set of tools to understand and critically assess emerging technologies of surveillance like the TSA body scans, fusion centers, and the like. A must read!

Before I read this book, I had no understanding of privacy laws. This book was not easy to read for me. I work in the networking CE field and I don't have any background in laws. But I learned a lot from reading this book. It is an eye opener for a non-expert. The book is good enough that I intend to read it a second time.

I don't normally get into legal writings, but this was is different. It gives you clarity as to why your privacy is important and why it is important to protect your rights! While you may start out reading and thinking you have nothing to hide, you will find that you really have nothing to share.

Solove makes this complex topic easy to understand, so much so that it is required reading for our executive staff. If we could wave our magic wand wand and have every citizen of the US read it, we would.

The topic is quite interesting, and the author knows his stuff well. But knowing it and writing it is a different topic. The book gets a little repetitive at times, and is very dry in writing style.

Absolutely fascinating content! Used one of the chapters within my high school English class. Had my students read one of the sections and it sparked a great debate!
