If you enjoyed those TV series, you probably would like your kids to get to see them. Well, the Dark Corners stories remind me greatly of my youth.“There’s a Giant Trapdoor Spider Under Your Bed†is the second of seven short stories in the Dark Corners series. As with “Oak Avenue,†this is a suspenseful terror story not too far removed from the great tales alluded to in the first paragraph. All stories in the series have Audible editions, narrated by seasoned professionals.A key difference is that this scary tale of fright is just 33 minutes duration. Works just about perfect for routine my 37-minute drive to work.BLUSH FACTOR: No worries. A few s-words that might be of concern to parents. Otherwise, this is suitable for most audiences. For example, if my sons were still teenagers, I probably would have no concerns, because even though they weren’t saints, they were respectful with their language. Still...POV: Third person. But, the writing lets us see most of what each person is thinking. Not through mind-reading, but through their words and actions.CHARACTER: The kids are well-developed and feel authentic.THE WRITING: Excellent flow and solid editing.Excerpt:There’s a Giant Trapdoor Spider Under Your Bed ‘…“It dug a hole. I really didn't know what to expect, never having read anything by Edgar Cantero. The imaginations projected by the four children were creatively displayed, each child buying into the others ' fantasies: from a trap door spider, to the ultimate solution to their crises, the detailed imaginations brought their problems to a nightmare ending solution!
They might have mentioned in the description that it was a children's book.Ages 5 to8.
This was a kid book. Very silly. Not my kind of story. Ok for younger minds. A brief respite allowed.
Edgar Cantero’s There’s a Giant Trapdoor Spider Under Your Bed (Dark Corners collection) is a remarkably short read (took me maybe a half-hour all told), but it was definitely worth the time. In it four children having a sleepover share a ‘game’. There’s a giant trapdoor spider under the bed. The shadows are antimatter. The mirror people want revenge. How will they survive until morning as the rules get more and more complex?I enjoyed this story so much. The kids are so careful and creative in how they follow the rules, and once each one comes up with a scenario, “It’s a fact now.†You’ll be on the edge of your seat as the kids navigate the power going out, a flashlight that doesn’t always work, and the fact that they left their wands outside the house. There are some entertaining Harry Potter references that sell the story. All in all, this is a seriously fun short story!
(I'm sorry to rant before reviewing this great short story, but I'm really sick of writing a review on my Kindle Fire and then when I'm just about done...boom! I hold down on the screen for a fraction of a second too long and everything is gone...I'm back to a blank screen! It happens all the time and it drives me crazy!!! The second review is never quite as well thought as it was the first time around.)Anyway...one last time...Though a little confused at first,I really enjoyed this installment of the "Dark Corners" collection. The author never says how old the characters are for sure, but I'm picturing four eight year olds at a slumber party.Being the shortest tale yet, it would be the perfect story to tell around a campfire while the little ones are making smores. At the same time, though, it might not be the best bedtime story - your child may never get to sleep worrying about the six foot long trapdoor spider that might be under their bed. :) "There's a Giant Trapdoor Spider Under Your Bed" is a fun read for all ages. The author has a talent for describing the terrifying creatures that can only come from a child's young overactive imagination. There is no sexual innuendo of any kind, of course; but there are a couple of swears added in here or there. We all know how kids are when there are no adults around, though, they like to think they are all grown up and tough.Without question, this story deserves 5 out of 5 stars!
I remember being one of these kids. I remember actually believing there were piranha in the pool, and getting out as fast as I could in a complete panic. And I miss that feeling, being legitimately terrified by something I myself was making up.This story takes you back to those moments and is delightful at the start, but bogs down before the end. The rules start to become over complicated and the threats hard to follow. My suspension of disbelief strained. My adulthood crept in. And I enjoyed it, but now I was a dad again and the room was a mess. Better to have just survived by the skin of my teeth.Still, I recommend reading or listening to this story.
