What to say about the genius of Fortuny? From the perspective of 2017 some of his soundest ideas seem dated and gimcracky, while others retain the dazzle that so impressed the soulful moderns of a hundred years ago. Yet even his silliest creations illuminate for us something about the age of modernism that the study of other artists obscures, and that might be his interest in science. Guillermo de Osma has "owned" Fortuny for forty years or more, and his first book on the topic was published in 1980. I'm sure many Fortuny fans still treasure their original de Osma biography, which added Fortuny's first name to the title—nowadays, I suppose he's one who doesn't need a first name any more—there is only one designer, and we call him Fortuny.As an American boy growing up in France, my mother used to take me to visit an elderly lady in a neighboring arrondissement, one who had fallen on hard times like the "Bachelors" of Henri de Montherlant's novel. And like those "bachelors," this lady still treasured a few outfits from days way in the past, and whenever ma mere and I would visit, there she would be, resplendent in a Fortuny Delphos gown. "Oh Marie-Louise," Mom used to say, "who did you get to do all those pleats?" The senior lady would smile and wave her hand as if to allude to a host of servants now dismissed, who had done such ironing. That was one of Fortuny's key inventions, of course, a system of treating silk so that permanent pleats could be embedded in it—unlike his contemporary Coco Chanel, who disdained science, and believed that women should be employed to iron such garments, all the time. The gown itself was a rich copper color, weighted down with an array of seed pearls that kept the garment' shape as it neared the floor. This old lady, nearing eighty I suppose at the time, had herself shrunken with age, yet she still looked magnificent, a tigress, like a French Lauren Bacall in a tall copper vase. "Remember her, Kevin," my mother would say, "for she is the spirit of France." Reading the new de Osma biography I was surprised to find out how much of his life was spent outside of France. In fact he was of the Catalan people of Spain, and spent much of his life in his studio in Venice (Italy.)De Osma prides himself on being the first modern biographer of the great Fortuny, and even if apres him, le deluge, he can always say, and he will always say, he was there ahead of everyone else. He started his research so long ago that you could pick up a Fortuny stage curtain in the thrift stores of Trullo or Corviale, and he could interview people like silent star Lillian Gish, one of the earliest American customers of Fortuny's salon in Venice. Since 1980, there was been a veritable monsoon of Fortuny books, but De Osma basically says,"I fathered them all," and shrugs in delight. The thing you will remember about the first book in 1980 is how the illustrations were largely in black and white, of no use whatsoever for showing off the work of one with so rarefied a sense of color that Anni Albers herself sought private lessons from him in his old age. But the pictures in the new updated "Fortuny: His Life and Work" book are almost all in color. A rich thrilling color! when things were pitiful for Fortuny, for after the stock market crash of 1929 he always had to scramble. His famous face, as distinctive as those of Picasso, Chaplin, Dietrich, could be sen in magazine advertisements for cars, handkerchiefs, champagne, a sad comedown, and meanwhile his couture customers had either killed themselves or moved on to newer and trendier designers. De Osma reminds us that things were so bad that in 1936 Fortuny sold his entire collection of Goya drawings to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. Sad, sad, sad! He did not live to see the triumph of the "New Look" but he would have laughed, for what was it after all, but a trimming down of many of his ingenious ideas of the 1910s and 1920s. Today, as screen stars like Alicia Vikander and Kristen Stewart continue to proclaim Fortuny as their designer of choice at the Met Gala, you will also see Fortuny lamps imitated in such ersatz shops as Design Within Reach and even Ikea. Oh, how the mighty are fallen! Check out the glorious black and white photos of mezzo Gladys Swarthout (1900-1969) in enough Fortuny fabric to fill an opera trunk on page 284-285.

I read all the praise and positive reviews and realized that I had a somewhat different view of this book. Prior to reading it I had never heard of the term wetiko but I came across it in the documentary, "I Am." So I bought Levy's book, started reading it, then discovered Levy's website and his many articles, some of which really resonated with me. I am African American and a few years ago I had travelled to the Amazon Basin of Peru. I took the shaman's visionary medicine and saw for myself many of the same things that Levy was saying about wetiko, but before I knew the word. In effect, Levy was validating my experience and speaking to some deeper truths in my life. I grew up in the Jim Crow South under segregation. My mother, younger sister, and I came to the NYC, the south Bronx. I was 12 years-old during the 70s and in the urban jungle I found at least as much segregation and prejudice and poverty that we ironically sought to escape in the South. These conditions, as far as I can tell from visiting family still there, have deepened since I left the 'hood. So looking in the rearview mirror, I went to the Amazon and sat with the shamans in five ritual ceremonies over nine days to understand 1) how my experience being black and poor had affected me and 2) why conditions in the 'hood persist to this day with seeming tenacity despite the "wars" on crime, poverty, and drugs. In the real jungle I saw in my visions, among other things, that conditions in the `hood were not necessarily what they seemed to be. Namely, they were not independent and separate, standing alone and isolated, from what was going on elsewhere. Rather, the `hood was a microcosm for what was happening in world, especially to indigenous cultures, when faced with disease, guns, steel, and Western education. In other words, if I really wanted to know the state of the world and how modern people were destroying it and themselves, I saw that I didn't need to count CO2 per billion, polar bears, or ice sheets. I could just go to the local prison and count the number of black men "on ice." I could go to the 'hood which is easy enough to find and note the conditions of its schools. I could go to the public housing projects, not 15 minutes from my home and see what they are about. After I returned to the U.S. from the Amazon, I understood that dividing and separating, delineating, demarcating, ghettoing was itself part of the problem. This "crazy" relationship between the 'hood and the world is exactly the name Levy seems to call "wetiko." He puts words to these things and I am profoundly grateful for his honesty and insight. Suffice it to say that as I was reading Levy's online essays I found he was saying original and interesting things when he was most personal, e.g., when he discusses his experiences at the hands of psychiatrists and the psychiatric-industrial complex. I wanted to know more what it was like being Levy. In a paradoxical way, the more he personalized his writing, the more general it was. It was like I could see myself in his experiences. I could identify with his pains and efforts, as well as his joys and personal discoveries. However, the book, Wetiko, takes a different path. He steps out of his personal experience, which is where his power lies. He writes about wetiko rather his experiences of wetiko. He goes into many generalities and political claims which I, for one, found difficult to follow or believe. I'm ok with political activism. I accept the Iroquois view, namely, spirituality is the highest form of political awareness. Yet, an honest assessment of the crisis right here at home in the `hood suggests that no amount of legislation, money, or well-intentioned efforts of the wealthiest nation the world has ever known has managed so far to disrupt conditions there. Indeed, it could be said in a certain way that legislation and political activism created those conditions. That's not to say that politics can't or won't alleviate them but they haven't in the last 50 years. One of the most enlightening books I have read.Paul Levy's brilliance and personal background gives him unique insight into the psychology of modern civilization. He draws from a broad variety of sources on history, psychology, economics, physics, religion, ecology, and more--many of which I feel now compelled to investigate--but though his perspective is well-rooted in established schools of thought, he synthesizes these ideas in ways I have never seen and he has many original insights of his own to add.The book is not perfect. Its message is diluted when the author gets into claims about the physical and metaphysical reality of "wetiko" vs. simply presenting it as an archetype that has seized the collective unconscious. It is often redundant. The author commonly takes several pages to repeat a single idea in slightly different ways; sometimes this elucidates the mind-bending concepts but more often the repetition is superfluous.Beyond its faults, this is a vitally important book about the root problem cursing the human race and how to address it. The section on self-reflection (p. 190) is one of the most illuminating passages I have read anywhere. I whole-heartedly agree with Sting, who said "The world would be a a better place if everyone read this book," and I will certainly review it multiple times myself.

 This small book packs a powerful punch. What is really nice is the book is broken down into 10 chapters. Each one of these chapters also has an action plan so you know what to do with the new information you have.This book covers who really has power in a conversation and who does not and why it is important.Strategy is an important part of business and sales as you will find easy to follow concepts in order to determine what to do next.You also get amazing advice on negotiation and how the process is really a dance more then a presentation.Overall this is a great book for salespeople, business owners, entrepreneurs or anyone else who is in the deal making business.At 120 pages this is an easy read.

This was a worthwhile read. Many of the techniques promoted in this book are distasteful to me, though I have no doubt they are valid and effective. I encounter such techniques regularly from counterparties. Looking into how those techniques work helps me identify them and deal with them when I do encounter them. The author also has some redemptive comments at the end of the book, which I appreciated. My negotiating philosophy is more in line with to Getting Past No and Never Split the Difference. Still, for anyone who negotiates professionally and who studies negotiation, this book is worth reading.

This book was awesome. Not only was it incredibly informative, it also had a lot of humor and was a fun read, as Mr. Cohen throws in pop culture references and geeky metaphors that keep the reader entertained. It's conversational, (albeit one sided) but you really feel as though he's bestowing his words of wisdom directly to you, so it keeps it from feeling textbook, and rather, more personal, as he isn't afraid to be honest. It doesn't matter if you're a lawyer, a producer, an agent, etc. everything in the book can be relevant if you're in the business of making deals, negotiating contracts, or just understanding how to play the game. For someone who's a newer entrepreneur to the business, there's a great deal to be said for his advice on how to avoid mistakes, how to understand your 'opponents' and how to not beat yourself up over deals going south, or the way you wanted. There are also pointers for type A personalities (I'm guilty) who never take a moment to breathe, and remain completely consumed by the machine. He recommends ways to take breaks and advocates that it's 100% necessary. He's right! It sometimes takes an outside person to state the obvious, and there are little tidbits and nuggets scattered throughout the book on various subjects, which contributes to the value of the material. I know I underlined a few things...I not only learned alot about dealmaker, but I think I learned a bit about myself in the process. Highly recommend it to anyone who's ready to move up to the next level.

It took me a while to read Jeff's book, The Dealmaker's Ten Commandments because I don't find the time to sit down and enjoy a good book. Once I did, I had regrets why I didn't read this book earlier. Being in the business myself I really learn a few things and enjoyed the book. I enjoyed Chucky character as a kid, I am glad to be a friend of Jeff's and glad that he is my entertainment lawyer who loves to stand up for the little people. Great read and f*&king great job on the book Jeff.

The book was an excellent read. Just the right pace with relevant examples and insights without being too preachy. I recommend this book to anyone who is thinking about starting their own business but may be afraid to take the leap. This book will likely give you the needed nudge into a whole new game with a mindset that will make you better off. Thanks to the author for a job well done.

As a transactional attorney, I can say with full confidence that each of Cohen's lessons, or commandments, in this great book of his will be invaluable to the experienced dealmaker as reminders of the rules of the great game that is negotiation. And to the less experienced, this should be an excellent, educational, introduction to dealmaking. Cohen drew not only on personal experience as an attorney and individual, but also from historical figures as he organized and elaborated on these commandments, which I think he would admit he did not conceive of because they are universal and timeless. Like the laws of physics, they apply to all transactions and negotiations, anytime, anywhere. Cohen just happened to spot them and took the time to discuss them in this book.

Such a great read. I ran across a mention of it through a Facebook friend and decided to give it a try. Insightful, funny, and smart. I definitely recommend it. Even if dealmaking isn't a regular part of your life, there is much to be gained by reading this book.

A good read. I liked Lila and Striker. Total opposites that attract in a great way. Made for a good read.

This was one of the better mc books I've read lately. I loved Striker and Lila was one of the better h's I've seen in a while. She was smart, sassy, funny and wasn't a drama queen. She knew when to keep quiet and didn't overreact to everything. She had common sense and used it, which is rare in most mc books. She was in trouble, she asked for help. I hate in books where the h is being threatened, run off the road, her house gets broken into, etc. and she doesn't tell anyone because she either doesn't want to bother anyone or she thinks it's a mistake and will just go away. That didn't happen here at all and it was refreshing. I loved all the guys in the mc and look forward to the next book. One problem I remember, in the scene when she's talking to Snake, it calls Snake Shiv a couple of times. I could see how that could confuse someone. Shiv is the president of Strikers club while Snake is the rivals president. But that was really no big deal. Again, I really enjoyed this book.

I have read too many MC books to count, but this one will go in my top 3 list. This author brings it all in this book. It was absolutely amazing. I will definitely keep up with this author. Loved the dynamic between the H/h. Wish you could leave more than 5 stars, this book definitely deserves it. Buy it today, you won't regret it!

This was just really cheesy. I wasn't too invested in any of the characters and had a hard time even reading it. Unfortunately this was a DNF for me. I got close, but it did seem to get fluffier as the time went on. I think parts of the storyline could have been good, it just didn't keep my attention.

When I'm in the mood for a literary walk on the gritty side, there is nothing better than Joanna Wylde's MC novels. Rebecca Zanetti also does a good job, and for slightly tamer, but no less compelling stories there is the MC world of Kristen Ashley.Lilly Atlas does a good job creating two interesting lead characters, but the book is drowning in multiple plot-lines and has a fan fiction feel. A gang war OR a sexual predator would be enough. The author introduces the heroine's father as a trouble-maker and this just fizzles out. I'm not sure if she is saving this element for future novels, but it felt awkward left as is. The same with the heroine living in two worlds as a respected doctor in a small town and then becoming a biker chick. The author raises the issue, but doesn't deal with it. Apparently, high schools love having MC club members and biker chicks coming to their meetings.This is a very sanitized MC novel where people get beat up, but there is no gore. Both Striker and Lila are a little too perfect. You would never guess that Lila hadn't grown up in an MC club given how quickly she acclimated to the life.My biggest issue is the stilted conversations. The dialogue is frequently awkward and yanks the reader out of the story.Ever heard bikers talk like this?"One of them did pistol whip me which is probably why my face looks so good.”“We don’t run drugs, Lila. That’s something our club decided long ago because of the violence and destruction it brings to the community. We are far from saints, but we don’t seek out violence.”“Having your goodness in his life is going to bring him peace, help him sleep at night. I’ve already seen it calming him.”Bwaahaahaa!"It’s hard to isolate because he wailed on me in multiple spots, but most of the pain is on the left side of my torso."When Striker put on his t-shirt and SHOES, I let out a loud guffaw. Yup, the MC club VP putting on his Nikes? Oxfords? Keds?Definitely not the worst I've read, but not interesting enough to make me reread this or look for more by this author.

This is the first book I have read by Lilly Atlas and I can't rave enough about her writing. No sooner had I finished this astonishing story, I immediately downloaded Book 2, Jester. Ms. Atlas has an amazing gift for dialogue and creating flawed characters you come to care about.At first glance, the premise of the book seems far fetched, but nothing could be further from the truth. I didn't just like Striker and Lila. I LOVED them! Striker, VP of the Motorcyle Club, No Prisoners, has an enormous responsibility for handling security issues for his members. In a small desert town, little goes unnoticed. While the club's activities involve violence, there is, nevertheless, a code of honor and loyalty that keeps them safe. When one of their people is injured severely enough to go to the hospital, Striker meets Lila, an Emergency Room Doctor.Lila, settled in the area after leaving DC and rejecting the wealthy lifestyle of her parents. With boundless energy and an independent spirit, she is power personified. She cares about her patients no matter who they are and finds herself wildly attracted to Striker. The story moves fluidly from start to finish and their developing relationship is a wonderful thing to behold. There's suspense due to a rival MC that provides the conflict.I could list a hundred adjectives to describe my feelings and they wouldn't be enough, so I'll just mention a few ~ Brash, Sexy, Gutsy, Gorgeous, Captivating, Passionate, Sad, Happy ~ Jester, Book 2 moved me in the same way and I am looking forward to Book 3. Bravo Ms. Atlas! Here's wishing you many new fans!

The writing is good and I've been learning. I'm bummed that examples that use XAML won't work if you're using Visual Studio on Mac. I know it's a Microsoft book teaching a Microsoft language, but just throwing this out to the Mac VS users out there.

Katy Butler has written such a book, based on and expanded from her original 2010 article (What Broke My Father's Heart) in the New York Times. In "Knocking at Heaven's Door", Ms. Butler exposes the often tragic end-of-life circumstances, caused by society's unrealistic expectations and/or religious beliefs as to the sanctity of life; prolong it at any cost (usually to the patient's & family's)! This is supported, and frequently encouraged, by the medical establishment out of incompetence, greed or fear of litigation. Other reviewers have given a good synopsis of the book from laymen's point of view; I shall add a perspective from someone who has been in the trenches.The inexorable advance in medical skills, nutrition, antibiotics, chemotherapeutics and overall technology has resulted in a significant boost to the overall health of society and its longevity; at the beginning of the 20th century life expectancy, on average, was 45 years compared to 78 years today. But a longer life is not necessarily a quality life. And that is where we fail as a society. We have become very adept at prolonging life no matter what, but what we are often really doing is protracting death. Over twenty percent of deaths in the USA happen in the critical/intensive care units "where 10 days of futile flailing can cost as much as $323,000", or to put it differently about 80% of medical expenses occur in the last 2 years of life in patients with debilitating chronic intractable conditions or incurable diseases. The USA is one of the few 'first world' countries where this extravagant waste continues to happen. Other countries, just as medically advanced as the USA, limit the use of expensive technologies to cases where there is a reasonable expectation of cure, many withold sophisticated procedures from the elderly suffering from chronic ailments, and a few have legislated physician-assisted suicides and euthanasia.In my four decades career in Academic and private practice I have often dealt with end-of-life issues in my work as Director of a large Critical/Intensive Care unit (ICU) in a teaching institution and, later on, as a cancer surgeon. Until the advent and popularity of Hospice care, the only alternative to incurable, terminally ill patients was to die at the hospital or at home; the latter option was sometimes not feasible because of inadequate, unwilling or absent family support. Admission to the ICU was limited by a protocol of strict criteria. Non-salvageable patients were not admitted to ICU and remained on the general wards (for their supportive care). However, in the past two decades there has been a proliferation of ICU at most hospitals, separate units for neonates, children and even teen/adolescents; Adult Cardiac, general medical, burn, dialysis, trauma and surgical units, and "step-down" units. More sophisticated life-support equipment and testing technologies continue to become widely available. Beds have to be filled and criteria for admission to ICU are liberalized. Patients are admitted to hospital and/or ICU only by an order from a physician. Most physicians will heed the patient's and family's wishes as to the end-of-life management. Problems occur when the patient leaves no instructions or there is a discord within the family, when the patient is incapacitated. The physician has to make the decision and discuss the prognosis with the family. The ethical physician will educate the patient and family as to what is best for the patient and many doctors do just that. But unfortunately, some use any and every means to prolong the patient's vegetative existence prompted by ego (can't lose a patient), greed (gets paid for daily visits and procedures), sheer incompetence or fear of litigation (from discontented family). This often occurs even when the patient leaves specific instructions to limit extraordinary measures etc.The reimbursement method in the health care industry is flawed and encourages the provision of excessive, often unnecessary medical care. Physicians and hospitals are payed to do procedures and perform tests. Every new technique or machine creates its own indications for use (market); to "someone with a new hammer everything needs to be pounded."The answer lies in a "challenge-proof" health care will with specific end-of-life management instructions, which cannot be disputed or changed by anyone other than the patient; This should be based on an honest conversation with the primary physician, all care givers and family. Also, at any stage of a terminal condition, if an invasive test or procedure is proposed, it is best always to obtain a second opinion (or a even third) from a specialist in that particular field.The primary physician should act as advocate and gatekeeper for the terminal patient, allowing only tests and/or procedures that would truly enhance the patient's well-being and comfort. He should stand up to consultants, hospital personel and even family members, if their conduct is not beneficial to his patient.Unfortunately, few are willing to do that for fear of antagonizing their fellow physicians, with resulting loss of referrals and income.Ultimately, in this country, we need to have a universally agreed-upon, comprehensive set of criteria to dispense end-of-life medical care; not based on financial benchmarks but on reasonable medical standards and targets. (I hear howls about "Rationing" and "Death Panels").Everyone dies eventually. But, to die in a vegetative state to placate others, while kept alive by machines and artificial (often painful) means, bathed in one's own body fluids and excrement, is an ignominious death.This terrific book should be required reading for all physicians and be included in the curriculum of all medical and nursing schools. It is a "must read" for all families with ailing or aging members.The interested reader would find pertinent information on hospice care and end-of-life, in works by Dennis McCullough, MD about `Slow Medicine', Ira Byock, MD `The Best Care Possible', Sherwin Nuland, MD `How We Die' and Elizabeth Kubler-Ross, MD `On Death and Dying'.

Butler whipstitches together a personal story of family, life and loss, with a troubling but informative assessment of current medical practices and American cultural norms that surround end-of-life issues.I first encountered Butler's writing on the subject in a New York Times article in 2010 called "What Broke My Father's Heart." She laid out the multitude of personal and medical issues as her parents entered their 80s - a sudden health crisis of her father's that ultimately laid the groundwork for his years-long decline - stroke, heart disease, dementia, blood clots, brain hemorrhage. She explained how our current system more often than not intentionally draws out the process of dying. Medication, surgical interventions, technology - all of these things led to the shell of the man she knew as her father, simultaneously saving and dooming him. She also lovingly describes the impact his years-long dying had on her mother, who became a round-the-clock caregiver, bather, cook, cleaner and diaper changer.What stood out most to me, what I took away from that article, is explained more fully in "Knocking on Heaven's Door." That for many, many of us, being forced to make a split second decision in a medical emergency will likely lead to a much longer path of disease, decline, and pain. Your mother has a heart attack? My family was in a similar spot. My mother had entered a hospital in May of 2008 to begin dialysis treatment for kidney disease, which had been treated to that point with medication. She did not return to her home until May of 2009. An endless list of crises emerged: A slip and fall in the hospital, compound fracture, infection, sepsis, endocarditis, MRSA, multiple temporary dialysis ports, cardiac arrest, three temporary pacemakers, one permanent pacemaker, atrophy, neglect, gangrene, amputation, three hospitals, and three skilled nursing facilities. Through the "wonders" of modern medicine, amazing strength on her part and dogged determination on our part, she finally returned home to her husband of nearly 50 years. Meanwhile, I racked up over $20,000 in airfare and expenses, flying back and forth between Hartford, Connecticut and Ft. Myers, Florida to handle the crises as they came. It was like a long distance game of Whack-a-Mole - you smack one down with a mallet, and another pops up over there. I used up all paid time off, and exhausted FMLA benefits. Ultimately, I put them on a plane to their native Michigan, sold their house in Florida, and joined them several months later, leaving a career and friends behind me on the east coast.The thing about books like this, at least for an average layperson like me, is that I didn't even know they existed. I knew next to nothing about any of my mother's health issues, and even less about Medicare and its rules. Or how to navigate the system. Or how to advocate for a family member. Or the importance of a medical quarterback. I didn't know I needed that kind of information, certainly not in advance of the "iceberg, right ahead!"But the initial article opened my eyes (mostly in horror) at what might further face us in the future. And why I was so glad to learn that the author was expanding on the article and working on a book. Butler's style of storytelling feels natural and warm. Her research into the professional health care field and the personal and societal costs are well-presented, and her conclusions are reasoned and imparted with empathy.I hope those who need this book find it before they tumble into the rabbit hole of end-of-life care. Her article in 2010 allowed our family to talk about the pitfalls that may face us in the future, and how we would want to proceed if x, y or z happened with either parent. Her article came two years before my mother's death, and it brought both comfort and clarity when we had difficult decisions to make. While I give it 5 stars the words hover "I LOVE IT" aren't exactly my sentiments. "I AM SMARTER NOW" would be more appropriate. I have worked in healthcare (cardiac intensive care) and IT (software) for several years. I think Ms Butler did an good job in research and balanced with her experiences as a daughter. My dad didn't have a pacemaker, but phsyciians quickly suggested another Medtronic stimulator for $90K which we only paid $250 for. I wish I read this book before that. Too often in our "fee for service" we are not leading with therapy, bio-feedback, counseling, activity, etc. In all my years cardiac nursing, I never considered what the long term effects of pacemakers. We fix problems acutely, but what are we setting up for the families long term? Never heard that as part of a cardiologists discussion with informed consent. As a history buff, I enjoyed the history of electro-therapy too. That was a bonus for me.
