The art direction remains stellar in this fourth volume of the Friendship Is Magic comics. Lots of bright vibrant colors and sharply drawn characters. The facial expressions convey emotion excellently. The comics themselves are split in to two two comic story arcs. The first involving pirates and the second a bookworm run amok. The comics have the distinction of having more humor aimed at an older demographic. I doubt the show's target demographic is familiar with Star Trek. And in the first volume of the comics, there were references to David Bowie. If you're an adult fan of the show, it's a welcome bonus. It's like a wink and a nod to the bronies among us.However, the book does loose some points on the story side. The first story arc is basically a reverse Little Mermaid meets pirates. It isn't particularly inspiring. The second story arc is more interesting and involves entering books to stop an unintentionally destructive bookworm. The writers give themselves a bit more free reign here to let the story take them where it will.It isn't bad, but I enjoyed the earlier volumes more.

This trade collects 2 full story arcs. The first one is just okay, a little disappointing for a pirate adventure but still enjoyable; the art style isn't my personal favorite. The second one has art I really like and the story is fantastic; it's packed with puns, geeky jokes, literary references, and funny background shenanigans. I like that anyone could pick up this volume and not worry about missing part of an ongoing story. Recommended for MLP fans or anyone looking for a good, witty, sweet, funny comic.

A stark departure from the previous volume. Leaps ahead in art- the pencils, character designs, colors, and page layout are phenomenal, easily surpassing many superhero titles, and the use of shading and lighting in the panels themselves heighten the tension in the story. And yes, there is tension in this story- at least for something pony-related. Plus (and this is purely coming from a personal standpoint), the main focus of this trade is Rarity, which is itself a rarity (ba da bump) in the series narrative, and it explores some facets of her personality that begged to be showcased. I love Rarity, and this title does not disappoint her fans at all. I commend the artist and writer for breaking away from volume 1's designs and taking some risks with the presentation- the final package is superb.

I highly recommend this for anyone (younger or older) who likes the MLP:FiM cartoon show or other modern MLP:FiM comics. This is the 5th through 8th issues of the comic compiled into a single graphic novel style book, and it covers the entire "Nightmares" story arc. It is an excellent choice for someone who, like myself, prefers to read these stories as a single whole book rather than as separate comic issues. This story is slightly more action-oriented and a bit darker in tone than the cartoon show normally is. It is still appropriate for children who watch the show, but the slightly higher stakes give a bigger sense of danger than the cartoon typically does. As a result, I think this is an especially good choice for anyone who is interested in seeing the ponies involved in a more serious adventure and more perilous situations. However, there are still plenty of humorous and silly moments in it to lighten the mood from time to time.If you like Friendship Is Magic and want to see more adventures in Equestria, I recommend this product for you. And be sure to also check out Volume 1 if you haven't already.

This story is a tad bit darker than the TV show, but more lighthearted than the first story arc of the comics with Chrysalis (no cute creatures meet a gruesome end in this book). It deals with Nightmare Moon, but not in the traditional way that one would assume. The artwork is fantastic, the story line is interesting and the print work and assembly is top notch. If you or your kids enjoy My Little Pony, pick it up. It's worth a read.

I got this for my tween daughter for Xmas and she thought it was AMAZING!!! She said she liked the story line and her favorite part is when they explained Princess Luna and what possessed her to turn her into Nightmare Moon (sorry, I can't give more..I don't want it to be a spoiler alert). She said It was very descriptive and the art was awesome. Volume 2 covers comics 5-8, so if you missed one of those it's in here. She also enjoyed that it has a lot of pop culture references i.e. Mable from Gravity Falls which is a t.v. show on Disney.

The comic book series of My Little Pony: Friendship is Magic is a bit different from the television show as for the most part everything is not concluded in one short chapter. Even though the writing style is a bit different from the originating TV series it is still a really enjoyable experience that I would suggest to any Brony or Pegasister, young or old!

I saw this comic in the local comics shop, and was appalled at the price ($4.00 an issue) Thanks to kindle I can finally enjoy the good storytelling without the sticker shock. This is a great comic for those of us who can't get enough of the show. Plus it was nice seeing Trixie doing something other than being a jerk. My daughter also liked the book.

As a physician I have been fascinated by quackery. My specialty, rheumatology, has seen a remarkable variety of "cures" including things like soaking hands in dish washing detergent or eating 9 gin soaked raisins. On the other hand, we have used gold and penicillamine to treat rheumatoid arthritis. I wish the authors had made more of an attempt to separate quackery from the legitimate attempt to improve medical care. The concepts of placebo and double blind studies are relatively new. Someone writing a book on quackery 50 years might consider therapies we currently use to be bogus. Gold and penicillamine work; we have just perfected better drugs and dropped using older ones. That does not mean we are quacks. Finally, I wish there were more references. I realize this is not a textbook but some documentation might be nice.It is, however, an excellent light read for anyone curious about medical history or fascinated by patients desperate for a cure and the remarkable number of evil people willing to prey on them.

Easy read, well organized. A ton of information. Once I got past the shock of what has been offered as cure-all, I realized that almost all these so-called cures were as expensive as they were ineffective. I don't think the rich were more gullible than the poor: they might simply had more time to worry about themselves. Plus, all these quacks figured out quickly where the market was. What is missing is more historical context. For example: The four humors theory is briefly touched upon but it could have used a more in depth discussion: it was at the basis of many of the cures which made sense when understood under that theory. Another example: "like cures like", a basic tenet of Alchemy and homeopathy, pushed to the limits with things like: heart = sun and other astrological concepts. I think however that Paracelsus got a bit of a bad rap in this book. He did lay down the "dose makes the poison " concept, still valid today. Paracelsus was not as handsome as the authors depict him, as can be seen in title pages of his books. But these are details.

Written by a medical doctor (Kang) and a freelance journalist (Pedersen), this book is part medical history, part cautionary tale, and part stand up comic’s routine. As the title suggests, the main focus is on the various nostrums, panaceas, and procedures that certain unscrupulous individuals have foisted on a credulous public over the centuries. These charlatans, also known as quacksalvers, or simply “quacks,” at best sold worthless remedies. At worst, their potions were laced with toxic chemicals that killed, rather than cured, the ill and desperate.Taking a topical approach, the authors divide their book into five sections, each one covering a range of questionable approaches to the treatment of human maladies. Within each section, a single chapter is devoted to a specific drug, substance, instrument, or what have you. Therefore, the section on “Elements” contains separate discussions on the uses and abuses of Mercury, Antimony, Arsenic, Gold, and Radium & Radon. Succeeding sections are entitled “Plants & Soil” (Example: tobacco), “Tools” (bloodletting), “Animals” (leeches), and “Mysterious Powers” (electricity). The text is further enlivened with sidebar articles, historic photographs and other illustrations of items discussed and end-of-chapter “Hall of Shame” synopses of various medical fads, such as weight loss schemes. What is to be admired with this text is the underlying message of caveat emptor, the ancient Roman saying that in plain English means, “let the buyer beware.” A little critical thinking goes a long way towards avoiding dangerous rip-offs. There is also much interesting historical medical trivia, such as the theory of the four humors, one of which was blood. It was long thought that an imbalance of any one was the cause of disease, hence bloodletting, or the opening of a vein, to release an “overabundance” of that substance, and thus to restore equilibrium and a state of health. The problem, of course, is that such theories were based on conjecture, rather than sound medical reasoning or, indeed, any kind of clinical evidence. This leads to a not so admirable feature regarding this tome, namely, painting the disreputable and greedy along with the caring and legitimate with the same black brush. There is a huge difference between ignorance and deceit. At least some of the practitioners that the authors take to task, such as Paracelsus, a Sixteenth Century alchemist, and Dr. Benjamin Rush, a signer of the Declaration of Independence, did not have the benefit of an education at a modern day medical school. These men did the best they could with the meager tools and knowledge at their disposal.Another dismaying feature is the weirdly inappropriate comical tone the authors take in describing what is frankly horrifying and revolting. The chapter on “Enemas & Clysters” is quite literally potty humor in the worst sense of the phrase. Furthermore, the constant use of slang and vulgarity represents both dumbed down science and a catering to the lowest common denominator. One would think that the target audience being aimed at is fourteen-year-old boys.If the reader can get past the lame one-liners and emphasis on the more grotesque aspects of the human organism, this book serves an important function in reminding us not to believe everything we read or hear and is a frightening reminder of what people have done to their own bodies in the name of health.Reviewer: Michael F. Bemis, Independent Reference Book Reviewer

Interesting. Could have been a great book but a bit too cute for my tastes. Exclamation points overused and clever jokes that aren’t. Some people would find the humor very entertaining.

Entertaining, witty, and chock full of the kinds of facts I personally love to share at parties, Lydia Kang and Nate Pederson's QUACKERY: A BRIEF HISTORY OF THE WORST WAYS TO CURE EVERYTHING was a delightfully morbid adventure into medical history. Ranging from coffee enemas to putting leeches on your tonsils, this book explores the fascinating and often pseudoscientific lengths people have gone to cure the incurable. My favorite aspect of this book was the wonderful writing that made the science and stories accessible to all readers. It often read more conversationally with a heavy dose of sarcasm and terrible puns. Concepts were often clarified with historical pictures and figures with fantastic captions. You'll find yourself chuckling while reading about amputations. It was truly a treat. However, I often found myself wanting more information than the short stories provided and I feel like references were lacking. If you have any interest in medical history, this book is a fantastic starting point. Kang and Pederson seamlessly weave medicine, history, and psychology into an entertaining and intriguing narrative that is sure to spur you to try to learn more. It's also so important to know what occurred in the past to understand how amazing our leaps and strides in medicine and science have been in the last couple hundred years. No more helter skelter humors or wandering uteruses around here!

Fantastic History about the Pacific Electric Railway!

as is

This was purchased as a Christmas gift along with LA Railway Yellow Cars for my husband. He loves them both. Thank you, Jim Walker.

I'm astonished by Pacific Electric's complexity and comprehensiveness of passenger and freight services. My only regret is that I never rode on it. I was born too late! A book that every railfan cannot miss.

Although there's a plethora of books written about PE, I would recomend this title for those who are uninitated to Pacific Electric. This book gives a very fact ridden synopsis of one of the US's busiest passenger and freight hauler.Thew ran 9300 (!) scheduled passenger trains and had a large LCL box motor operation. Yhat's in addition to 100's of electrically/steam/diesel hauled freight trains throughout the LA Valley area. All this ran on 900 miles of right of way, including the famous Watts 4 track raceway and the subway terminal caddy corner to the elevated PE Terminal in the above mentioned terminal building. Many foreign car manufacturers use the terminal building as a "modern" backdrop for their car ads. Talk about longevity!!!Photos run from excellent to very good and still sharp, except very old ones that are technically limited so.This book is one of Arcadia's Regional Titles. For the most part they are all excellent. I got the one on Queens county and found out that a streetcar line ran through mostly back yards from Flushing NY to Jamaica NY. That explains the wide street on 164th St, which would otherwise be a narrow Queens street. No other source published this type of information.if you want a good primer, but not every nut and bolt in PE's history, this is agood place to start.

Excellent summary (verbal and photographic) of Los Angeles' early rail history, including the role played by Henry Huntington - his 'red car' streetcar lines and enormous profits obtained by opening up new areas for the masses.

This book is done by the Historian for METRO in Los Angeles and makes liberal use of Pacific Electric original files and photos which are a part of METRO'S historic archives. It is an outstanding book. and a must have for trolley, interurban, and light rail fans.

I grew up in Pasadena and saw the trolly car tracks being torn out of the ground and the right of ways abandoned. With a little bit of investigation, pre-Internet, I easily learned of the company that was created and funded by Standard Oil, General Motors, and Firestone Tire, with the express purpose of buying up all the electric street car lines in the country and converting them to bus routes using fuel from Standard Oil and tires from Firestone to run the General Motors coaches. This conspiracy made it to the US Supreme Court but by then the damage was largely done.Instead of environmentally benign electric street cars in major cities throughout the country we now have buses belching out diesel fumes and polluting the air we breathe and contributing to global warming. Even if cities wanted to restore electric street cars, such as are found in almost every city in first world countries other than the United States, the cost to purchase the right of way makes this prohibitively expensive. This is the sort of whitewash of history that helps explain the profound ignorance of so many "educated" people in this country. I am surprised and dismayed that the book was written by someone who professes to be a historian.

Like: Everything about the Bermuda mystery.Dislike: Too short.Five stars because it was a very interesting book I have never read.I recommend it to everyone who likes to know a little more about mystery issues.

This was a fairly quick read for my 9 year old but she found its little scary. She no longer wants to fly anywhere that has to pass through the triangle. There were also other mysteries discussed in the book that freaked her out a bit, like the lock nest monster.

Bought this for my son to use for a school project. He enjoyed reading it.

Love this series! Great for kids and adults.

Muy interesante

I first read this book in the early 1980s. It was my first big read (+1,000 pages - an impressive paperback to carry around). I recently saw that it was an exceedingly economical Kindle purchase and decided to read it again (over 30 years later). It is still an incredible work. I got more out of it the second time. The best reason to read it is that the author (now deceased) conducted numerous interviews in the 1960s and 1970s with various individuals that interacted with Hitler and around him, sources now also deceased. That detail comes through clearly in the narrative. I wouldn't suggest this as a first introduction to World War II. The various battles, operations, and actions are secondary to what was going on directly in Hitler's inner circle. So for example, you don't get a good overview of the Holocaust and its victims, but you are provided with remarkable detail on how various forces in the German hierarchy enabled it and contrasting opinions from individuals involved in the decision-making or on the sidelines. This doesn't diminish the evil, but it does provide insight on those that knew, those that were active in pursuing it, and those who were opposed, but helped enable it. I was particularly struck by how many of those people thought that England and the United States would approve because of anti-Semitic views voiced in those countries. It is not the complete story, but a vital piece for readers who want to know more.

I have read over 280 books on WWII in trying to understand why Hitler did what he did. I rated Laurence Rees book as the best I have ever read. One of the readers of my review of Rees book "The Nazis" said that Toland was the best and should be number one on a readers list. I decided to read Tolands book to compare to Rees book to decide for myself. I am now about a third through the 1200 page book and I have to agree that Tolands book is the best and most authorative of the Hitler period. It's like being there. I recommend Tolands book wholehardedly. Hard to put down but you need to take it slow to absorb the whole thing. In the book is a list of interviews with people around Hitler who he interviewed. In many cases it required several interviews with the same person to verify info obtained from a third source. It is no wonder that this book got a Pulitzer Prize for this meticulous researcher that was a just reward for five years of detailed research!!!!

A Review by Anthony T. Riggio of the book, “Adolph Hitler: The Definitive Biography, written by John Toland.I purchased this book from Amazon in the Kindle edition. This book was well over a thousand pages and probably would be very intimidating in its bound edition. Reading this book took a bit longer than usual as I had to stop and research via other sources word, phrases and geographical locations. This is one of the limitations of reading a historical or nonfiction book where you cannot easily flip to an index, glossary or map renditions.People asked me why would I read a book about such a monstrous character in history and my response was as simple as “this is history” and it relates to events before and after World War II and it also impacted on me personally when my time in the Army was extended due to the Berlin Wall crisis in 1961.Mr. Toland related the life and rise to power of a very interesting historical person who accumulated power by sheer will power. Hitler was a very average German character in his beginning life. He had, like most families, issues that did influenced his adulthood but the experiences were not unlike many Germanic people of his era. While born an Austrian, his affinity was to the German heritage and the future of Germany as he imagined it at that time. His veterancy of the Great War (World War I) effected his life and future actions in no small way.His early goals were to be an artist but he was denied entrance to the Art University as his talents were not recognized worthy enough (though in any other country or time, he had enough skills or natural abilities to make a fairly good living). While his passions were toward politics, they were negatively impacted by his near do well attitude may have slowed his advancements in this or any vocation.World War I sensitized his dreams of having political influence on his adopted country of Germany and as his adult life progressed he adopted a Bohemian life style and was influenced by some emerging thoughts of government and began socializing with some of these radical thinkers.Once he realized where his skills and abilities were, he progressed at record speeds to positions of political notoriety by sheer will power and his incredible ability to be an orator. His speeches were both hypnotic and motivationally forceful enough to develop a hard core of followers who recognized his leadership abilities. At one point his thoughts and ideas put him in conflict with government and was convicted of social disruptions and sentenced to jail. Because his crimes were political in nature, he was allowed certain privileges denied to common criminals. During this period he wrote his plan for government “Mein Kemp”. Had the people read this before his meteoric rise to power they may have thought twice about promoting his political aspirations. After, he became powerful, he was like a “rock star” and his book became most popular and enhanced his wealth.Through pure force of character and oratory skills he wooed the German people into accepting his vision of Germany and his view of the stringent and punitive reparations imposed on Germany after the Great War.Central to his philosophy of rule was the almost universal blaming of Germany’s suffering to the Jews, not only of Germany but of Europe and even the United States of America. This Anti-Semitism lubricated the operations of government and the social order to negative heights and thoughts. The Jews became the accepted scapegoat for all the woes resulting from the Great War and Hitler’s imagined view of both governmental and economic life in Germany. As Hitler accumulated increasing power that the people gave him, he became a megalomaniac and believed he was destined by divine right to rule Germany and her expanding Reich. Through his belief in the need to increase geographic growth needed for the German people , it became the Genesis for the most horrific conflict in the history of man.Hitler’s manipulation of his own people grew so did his ability to leap diplomatic hurdles and intimidated many countries and because many of these countries were cognizant of the abusive reparations from the Great War, there was this sense of guilt of the treatment of Germany and an almost unconscious acceptance of Germany’s martial spirit and expansion of her boarders. The control of Germany’s military further enhanced his self-importance and his war decisions impacted on Germany’s abilities to make war and ultimately to defend her nationhood. While many dwell on Hitler’s megalomania, it is evident that his far reaching thoughts of political ambitions were to some extent, nationalistic in nature. His pathological views of the Jews would be judged subsequently by both man, history and God.I believe this book is a worthy study of both Germany and the history of World War II; it is also a study of human nature and corruptibility of absolute power.I rated this book with five stars and recommend it highly as a definitive work of both biography and history.

This is a great read. Having read "Rise and Fall of the Third Reich" by Shirer several times, this book fills a number of gaps of that book. (Not that this is a criticism of that book.) This first half of Adolf Hitler goes into detail more of his personal life as a youth and his "alone" life in Vienna in his late teens and twenties. Extremely well done by the personal interviews of those who knew him. The war years give more personal insight into him than Shirer's book as I expected. A very good read to understand a totalitarian dictator.

This book is as relevant today as when it was written decades ago. It's most fascinating for the way that it illuminates the people around Hitler as utterly unable to deal with a sociopath; despite their worldly experience and great savvy, they just can't seem to believe that Hitler is not sincere - that he can't be reasoned with. Astonishingly, we have not learned this lesson. As a work of journalism, It's finely balanced. It depicts Hitler as a human being with a childhood and friends. It's as close to judgment-free as anything I've ever read, leaving the reader to draw his own conclusions. You could be a Jew or a Nazi and read this with equal satisfaction.

This is an excellent installment in a very useful series. Butler’s ‘very short introduction’ to postmodernism packs in a great deal of information and successfully characterizes the movement/phenomenon. This is no mean feat, since postmodernism is sometimes used as a philosophic nexus, one that is associated with capital-T Theory and the work of the French Nietzscheans (though Lacan receives no attention here). ‘Postmodern’ is also used to characterize fiction, photography, conceptual art, architecture (especially) and, to a lesser degree, music. Butler gives examples of all of these and attempts to make sense of a notion that is quite slippery. For example, Jameson’s famous account of the Westin Bonaventure hotel in downtown Los Angeles as quintessentially ‘postmodern’ is debatable. It does not, for example, have features that call attention, obstreperously, to function, as the Frank Gehry house on the west side of town does. The Bonaventure is ‘reflexive’ to the viewer because the viewer sees his reflection in the exterior but it is not reflexive in the sense that John Barth’s novels (or, for that matter, TRISTRAM SHANDY) are/is. In other words, this is a thicket and Butler leads us through it with great skill and lucidity. The overall characteristics of postmodernism are discussed in detail; it is anti-humanist, anti-foundational, intensely skeptical, relativist and deeply suspicious of traditional notions of truth, meaning and reasoning. It is anti-empirical and jealous of science’s cultural positioning as well as its truth claims. It denies the reality of the ‘individual’ and is anxious to deconstruct any remaining faith in the reality and authenticity of ‘history’. Like the internet it collapses history into the momentary and substitutes imagery for argument. Some of the Amazon reviewers have considered Butler to be contemptuous of postmodernism and, in effect, an unfair judge. I disagree; I find him to be quite fair. There are many commentators who see postmodernism as closer to the armament of the antichrist than a philosophic/cultural current. Since we are now 14 years beyond the publication of Butler’s book it has become increasingly clear that postmodernism’s impact has waned significantly. English department applicants to graduate specialties in Theory have shrunk to almost none and current graduate students are often heard to say that they feel lucky that they escaped this particular time in literary studies. Many believe that Paul Boghossian has cut the heart out of relativist/constructivist approaches in his FEAR OF KNOWLEDGE: AGAINST RELATIVISM AND CONSTRUCTIVISM (2007).Of course, it has long been a staple of those who would criticize relativism that those who would aspire to be relativists must stand somewhere. You cannot assert the authority of relativism without, simultaneously, undercutting your own argument. The same is true of Derridean deconstruction. The endlessly sliding signifier problem and the inherently contradictory nature of language problem are often dissolved by simple context. Deconstructionists are troubled by the fact that the Greek word for medicine is also the word for poison, but as Donald Greene has pointed out, we have no confusion with regard to the meaning of the word when we see one person with a sore back take a single Valium and another desperate individual take 50, washing them down with Scotch. Similarly, ‘cleave’ means to both join and separate, but we have no trouble understanding this when we hear a minister urging a marrying couple to cleave to one another and when we see an Amsterdam diamond expert preparing to cleave a large stone. Postmodernists have urgently informed us of the weakness of Enlightenment rationality but used Enlightenment tools to defend themselves against their critics. As Thucydides put it, “it is a habit of mankind to entrust to careless hope what they long for, and to use sovereign reason to thrust aside what they do not desire” (noted by Victor Davis Hanson in his brilliant new book on WWII).Butler attributes the postmodernists’ contempt for the Enlightenment to the fact that reason, logic and the empirical method have deflated the claims of both Marx and Freud (which, for them, are essential): “Postmodernists are by and large pessimists, many of them haunted by lost Marxist revolutionary hopes” (p. 114), a point explored at length by Stephen R. C. Hicks in his very important EXPLAINING POSTMODERNISM (2004). Frederick Crews has now deflated the claims of Freud once and for all (try to find his influence on a contemporary Psychological Sciences department) and the numbers are in on the number of people slaughtered in Marxist states. Hence the argument that the use of Enlightenment principles and techniques has undercut Marx; thus, the postmodernists attempt to undercut the Enlightenment and get back into Marxist business.Ultimately, Butler concludes, “the enduring achievements of postmodernism are therefore likely to be found not within philosophy or politics, or even in moral thought, but within the artistic culture” (p.123). In short, it will be remembered in the way that Dadaism and Surrealism are remembered. It will provide influences here and there and a few of its principles will be seen in our information technology but it will not displace Platonic idealism, Aristotelian empiricism or other foundational philosophic structures. I believe that this is spot on.Highly recommended.

When the title says A Very Short Introduction they are not kidding. Nonetheless, Christopher Butler has done an outstanding job of boiling down the essence of Postmodernism. In fact, he has done so well I would direct anyone to this book who wanted a good foundation in the subject before reading further. Even if you know the subject of Postmodernism this is a good read because it is so well written. While supporters of the ideology may quibble over the critique I don't think they could complain (reasonably) about the presentation. It is clear, concise, and very insightful. The author has managed to zero in on the essence of the subject and then explain that core belief system accurately and clearly. If you want an introduction to Postmodern thought this is the book to read. Extremely straightforward, no guff or misdirection, no unnecessary discussion of anything out of the mainstream.I've now read several titles in the Very Short Introduction series and every one of them has been good to outstanding.AD2

What I love about this book is Christopher Butler's thinking and use of language. While postmodern pseudo-intellectuals hide behind obscurantist language, Butler carefully deconstructs their kitsch pretenses.

I was trying to understand postmodernism and this book provides a very nice overview. I am not yet certain if postmodernism is the proper solution to our challenge. I think anything is worth consideration and we may always choose bits and pieces from this concept to help us form the next attempt at improving our existence.Thank You, Christopher Butler, for sharing your thoughts.

This is not my idea of a book in very good condition. This book is practically unusable. Not happy at all with the seller. This is not a complaint about the books contents.

Very helpful. After studying postmodernism years ago, this summary clearly organized the knowledge I had gathered and clarified some confusion. There are still some points evading understanding not because of the author's presentation, but because postmodern thought is not always coherent. Postmodern architects could not translate literary theory directly into steel, plaster, and glass. I will refer to the book in future.

Overall good book, I guess. It provides a clear intro to postmodernism. The author, however, in my opinion, is too negative about the topic. Expect a bit more difficulty in reading this compared to other books from this series.

This is an excellent well balanced introduction to material most people consider tough.Visual artists may be disappointed because the emphasis is on literary criticism, but that would be nit-picking. The underlying concepts are identical and understanding the basic concepts will make it obvious how to apply them appropriately. Back to this book, it presents the material clearly and without the preciousness or pretense, and with opposing view points and weaknesses too. If you want a solid working introduction to the material and a great reference guide once you master it, this is a can't beat purchase for the money. It's also really well made and bound. As for students, if you only have time for one introduction and need one book that might get you through a tough lit. or art history course, this will do the job perfectly.
