Rashid Khalidi is the author of seven books about the Middle East, including Palestinian Identity, Brokers of Deceit, Resurrecting Empire, The Iron Cage, and Sowing Crisis. His writing on Middle Eastern history and politics has appeared in the New York Times, Boston Globe, Los Angeles Times, Chicago Tribune, and many journals. For his work on the Middle East, Professor Khalidi has received fellowships and grants from the John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation, the Ford Foundation, the Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars, the American Research Center in Egypt, and the Rockefeller Foundation, among others. He is the Edward Said Professor of Modern Arab Studies at Columbia University in New York and is editor of the Journal of Palestine Studies.

Rashid Khalidi may be the foremost historian of the Palestinian people in the United States today. Compared to other major academic historians of the Arab world, my experience with Khalidi's work has always been an approachable jargon-free style that presents the Palestinian cause in reasoned, persuasive analysis. The best example of that is his book The Iron Cage. Here, Khalidi analyzes the history of the Palestinian national liberation struggle, from the Mandatory period to the foundation of the Jewish state, the Cold War and the time since the Oslo Accords. The US media has done Professor Khalidi a great disservice by its focus on his suppoosed militant past and a possible association with candidate Obama that would tarnish the future president's image. He is a sensible, authoritative scholar of the highest order. Anyone wanting to start familiarizing themselves with the history of the Palestinian cause would do well to read this first.

the subject is a difficult one to write about and takes someone who has been involved from the inside to write so accurately on this topic. Khaladi does an amazing job all the way round.

A very good book that highlights the failed choices and decisions on the part of Palestinian leaders and civilians within this conflict. In my opinion, Khalidi’s goal as a historian is to reestablish the agency of Palestinians. In highlighting and assuming responsibility of failings in leadership, the outcome could potentially be the empowerment of their movement as whole.

Content Summary: Rashid Khalidi's account provides some valuable historical context for the Palestinian struggle for Independence from the 1920s to the Revolt of 1936 to 1939. This is where is book is at its strongest (Chapter 1-4). He offers some summary analysis and very general overview of the years after the 1948 war - including some on Arafat and the Oslo accords.Analytical Review: Khalidi's book is strongest in Chapter 1-4, as mentioned. I was disappointed that he glossed over the very critical years of Arafat, the PLO, the intifada, Hamas, and terrorist attacks on Israel (be it the Olympics or the suicide bomber attacks). He lost a lot of narrative events he could have developed critically. Additionally, his opening remarks about U.S. support of Al-Qaeda and OBL seem very off-the-mark, almost implying that we directly funded both. It is one thing to say we were both supporting the war against the Soviets, another to supply concrete evidence of a link - which he implies but for which he furnishes no evidence. This made me somewhat wary of his objectivity and accuracy. After that he recovered somewhat, and his conclusion that peace is very difficult right now, is an observation most would share. I would say this book is worth the investment - but more reading is necessary to fill in the obvious gaps he leaves in the Palestinian account.

Khalidi's book is probably one of the most spotted on reading lists dealing with Israel-Palestine: well-written, concise, and essential. Khalidi has a strong historical background in the subject and is able to synthesize events and ideas seamlessly. He is also fluent in a number of languages, allowing him to draw from a wide array of primary and secondary sources. Although Khalidi's political ideology is too liberal for some tastes (and a Wikipedia search away), the book is remarkably unbiased in highlighting the transgressions of the West, Israel, and the Palestinians themselves in thwarting the push for Palestinian statehood. I found his chapter on the PLO and Arafat particularly interesting. Fair warning though, this may not be the best "introductory" book as some basic knowledge of terms and persons is kind of presumed by the author. Additionally, this book aims to look at a specific aspect of Palestinian history - the quest for statehood - and not present an overview of Palestinian history itself. In any case, a remarkably good book from a consistently-excellent academic.

Every American should read three books by Rashid Khalidi: Palestinian Identify, The Iron Cage, and Brokers of Deceit. I purchased this book as a supplement to teaching Story of the World vol. 1 and the first 3 topics of Learning Adventures (A World of Adventure). This book deals exclusively with Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It is like a Barron's travel guide but written for a younger reader; probably 7 and up. There are all sorts of tips about food, lodging, local sites, etc., but all written for ancient times. It is such a humorous book! My 9 year old hasn't put it down since it came in the mail the other day. There are all sorts of colorful illustrations to engage the reader and it is very easy to read aloud from this book or to assign a certain topic for your child to read over. The table of contents is well outlined and everything is easy to find. This book makes history fun and brings new life to some dry aspects of ancient history. Your child will feel as if they have actually seen the sites, eaten the food, and dressed and lived with the peoples of those times. The pull out maps are labeled very well and are easy to understand. Overall, this is a wonderful purchase and I hope they have guides covering the other cultures of ancient times.

My children are homeschooled and studying ancient times. They all have loved this book. They are in grades 7 and 4.

This book shows most of the methods used to place beams one on top of the other to increase power, but is more of a concepts book to give the reader an idea of the different methods with simple drawing examples and a few formulas to back them up. I was hoping the book would also cover PBS cubes and knife edges, but I guess knife edging isn't technically "combining" but rather stacking or placing beams close together. However PBS cube combining of beams is something which could have been mentioned, although perhaps too simple to be of interest to most, I would have liked to have seen what can be done with them, maybe there are some twists I am unaware of.I gave the book three stars solely due to my disappointment over 88 pages turning into 74, due to the last 14 pages being nothing but advertisements for the authors other books, and the way the Kindle format makes a book appear to have far more information than it really does due to each page being about the quarter of the size you would find in a printed book. This was my only disappointment, the way the information was presented was done very well, the illustrations made complex techniques easy to understand. Although the price might seem high for such a little book, forget trying to find another book on this subject for anywhere close to 30 dollars by another author, this was the least expensive I could find, other books on the subject priced well over 100 dollars.The author obviously believes in keeping the descriptions of the methods as simple and concise as possible, this is very helpful to understanding what is being presented, but at the same time for my money makes the book too small. Perhaps photographs of the types of optic setups being explained could also be included to make us feel better about spending this much for so little information, even if concise by design. (Edit: Feb 2017, the price was reduced to a fraction of its earlier price).

In this compelling but challenging children's book, McWhorter tackles the national civil rights movement from Brown v. the Board of Education to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In 1963 McWhorter was a sixth-grader at a segregated Birmingham school, and throughout, this account is both factual and personal. She discusses her feelings as a white child in the South, and she focuses in on the many ways in which both white and black children were involved in the movement: the brave young people who desegregated schools throughout the South, the 1,500 Birmingham students who protested and were attacked by dogs and doused by fire hoses, and white students protesting integration. This is a true masterpiece and obligatory reading for anyone who wants to understand the realities of The South in the 1950's and 1960's. Be prepared to be alarmed by the horrors of southern racism, especially in the pre-1960's.

In A Dream Of Freedom, Diane McWhorter gives the 9-12 year old reader a concise history of the American civil rights movement between the years 1954-1968. McWhorter covered some of this material in her earlier civil rights chronicle, Carry Me Home which won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. A Dream of Freedom opens with a rousing foreward by the legendary Rev Fred Shuttlesworth who is one of the central figures in the story that follows. The book focuses on the turbulent period between 1954-1968 when the growing civil rights movement battled institutional segregation, violence and bloodshed. McWhorter's account is both disturbing and inspirational. She is an excellent storyteller with a straightforward and unflinching delivery. She closes with a poignant epilogue and bibliography that encourages further research. This book is well organized and illustrated with over 120 photographs and collages. A Dream of Freedom should be in every school and public library.

Snap shots of the Civil Rights movement. Each year's events explained in narrative detail, with great pictures. A personal touch of Diane Mcworter, a white child growing up right next door to all these events and oblivious to what was happening. It has taken her years of research to see the truth that was swept under the rug of the white community.

We were the first to check this book out at our library, the day after Rosa Parks died. What a lucky find! We homeschool, and this has been the PERFECT book to fully educate our 8 and 11 year old daughters about the Civil Rights Movement. The chapters are short enough for a kid to digest, and yet manage to completely cover the subject at hand, and the language keeps them interested. You won't find a better book on this subject material for juveniles.

About the Author

Toby Hemenway was the author of the first major North American book on permaculture, Gaia’s Garden: A Guide to Home-Scale Permaculture, as well as The Permaculture City. After obtaining a degree in biology from Tufts University, Toby worked for many years as a researcher in genetics and immunology, first in academic laboratories at Harvard and the University of Washington in Seattle, and then at Immunex, a major medical biotech company. At about the time he was growing dissatisfied with the direction biotechnology was taking, he discovered permaculture, a design approach based on ecological principles that creates sustainable landscapes, homes, and workplaces. A career change followed, and Toby and his wife spent ten years creating a rural permaculture site in southern Oregon. He was associate editor of Permaculture Activist, a journal of ecological design and sustainable culture, from 1999 to 2004. He taught permaculture and consulted and lectured on ecological design throughout the country, and his writing appeared in magazines such as Whole Earth Review, Natural Home, and Kitchen Gardener. There is a lot to absorb from this book. After having spent the last two months reading it and applying tips from it, I wish I'd read the last chapter first since it summarizes everything. It takes the mountain of overwhelming knowledge and gives a simple path forward.Since reading this book, I have a more holistic view of my yard. I can see I've already made some mistakes in my yard, but it is exciting to begin to see results already. Instead of following the usual route of planting rows of veggies, I've started working on symbiotic blends of nitrogen fixers, vines, and other roles.Today I picked up a cheap bird feeder and post from a hardware store and put up a quick bird feeder over a dry, weedy patch in the back. I look forward to seeing how well the author's claim that doing this will lead to passive, ongoing returns in the form of birds' fertilizing the barren area with their poop and their weeding the area as some scratch around the ground looking for fallen seeds.His urban ideas are incredible, too. Don't miss out on that chapter, even though it's tucked in just before the end. He has a few pages devoted to what you can do with the "hell strip" between the road and sidewalk (usually just used for a mailbox and cable tv lines).Don't skip the observation step he gives in an incredible several pages and sidebar. While we did some of this work, I wish we'd done even more extensive up-front observation. It turned out we had to overhaul our plans once the people came out and marked the utility lines. They weren't where we thought they were originally. But I'm so glad this book showed us how to find out these things early on. It would be a shame to plant an expensive tree and pour water and resources into it only to have it uprooted later on.If there is one reason to buy this book, it's because it will shift your perspective away from seeing gardening as a chore with unending maintenance. Instead, by working with nature instead of against it, problems can become signals, temporary obstacles, or just part of the normal flow. The book is pragmatic, realistic, backed with science and research, and a lot of fun. Get it, read it, and try it out.

First the book explains how nature works, then how your garden can mimic it.Why mimic nature? according to Hemenyway, the need for fertilizers, pesticides, tilling, weeding and watering can be greatly reduced or eliminated, while transforming one's yard into a potential source of fruit, veggies, medicinals, crafts, wildlife habitat and income.The book draws heavily on permaculture, Bill Mollison's ecological design methodology, only Hemenway explains it in a much more user-friendly and enjoyable way than Bill's Designers Manual. For instance, he clearly and concisely explains the different roles of a plant within a plant community, such as fixing nitrogen, producing mulch, attracting beneficial insects, repelling harmful insects, accumulating deep-down nutrients, etc. Then he suggests multiple species for each function, conveniently laid out in charts.I found the explanations of natural processes very enlightening, and the species charts very useful. I'd recommend this book to the laymen of ecology or anyone interested in gardening or organic food.

I have been wanting this book for ages and I waited until I had a house and an acre of land to work with to buy it. That was a big mistake. There is so much information here that is so well presented...I should have started reading and absorbing this years ago. This is an ok problem to have, I think! I've got huge plans for our property and everything in this book resonates so perfectly with me and our vision. If you want simple, neat rows of veggies and flowers...there are other books for you. If you want a thriving, healthy, bio-diverse landscape (no matter how much room you have) get this book and start reading.

I knew literally nothing about Permaculture gardening when I bought this book - my mother mentioned it to me and said to check it out, so I came to Amazon where the description intrigued me......fast forward 3 weeks later and my front water guzzling lawn has now been sheet mulched in preparation for a wonderful, sustainable, garden, and I have 5 baby chickens being delivered next week!I'm not kidding when I say that this book was transformational in my views on gardening - I live in the city with very limited space, and our lawn was the best in the neighborhood. I have a raised bed for a garden in the back, and did produce some good veggies, but not near enough to eliminate buying any items at the grocery store. My first 10 minutes with this book I learned what I was doing wrong in my raised bed - and as I dug deeper it was one "Aha!" moment followed by another. I am a scientist, and I can't believe none of this had ever occurred to me!The book is very in depth and gives wonderful examples with specific plants (not just general concepts) - the only thing I would have liked to see more of was pictures of actual permaculture gardens. I'm a very visual person and like to have something to imitate when designing my own project, so I'm still searching for design examples to incorporate (once again with specific plants).Just know that if you get this book you're going to be inspired to make some drastic changes in your landscape - as evidenced by my "Bomb Proof Sheet Mulched" lawn - the recipe in the book for this was extremely helpful! I will admit that my first initial thought upon opening the book was - oh no, this is too in depth and not being a professional gardener, I'm never going to understand - trust me when I say, pick a chapter that sounds interesting to you and start there - that is what I did, and it migrated to many of the other chapters and just kept going!

DV is an autobiography about one of the most influential people of the 20th century. A woman who was born into more tha a little wealth, wearing haute couture as a youngster, from Coco Chanel, herself, while being regarded as an "ugly duckling" by her own mother. She grew up to become one of the world's most alluring women. Her sway over pop culture and fashion, her domineering lust for beauty and her great love for youth and diversity created a template that is unparalleled. She had made the definitive case for fashion, especially haute couture, as an art form. Her sense of rigor, discipline, style, beauty and fantasy are the stuff of which any true culture is made. The true testament of her unerring eye is that everyone she chose to discover are icons of their field, to this day. Every. Single. One. The book is a testament to her taste level. Were she male, scholarships, schools & awards would be executed in her name. However, because she's seen as an "eccentric" and being female, she is not viewed as a true American who has contributed to the taste and status of America, independent of Europe.As Patrick Swayze's character, Miss Vida Boheme, stated so eloquently in "To Wong Foo:Thanks For Evberything, Julie Newmar", buy it, read it, then, commit sections to memory. This is a true memoire - the recollections of a dynamically original woman whose influence will be felt for years to come. It is not absolutely factual, and no one will care! Diana Vreeland's career is astonishing. I remember seeing the amazing shows that she curated at the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum - a great climax to an amazing career. And lest anyone think that fashion is trivial, it is a driving force of the world- which can be positive or negative. This book should be purchased along with Vreeland's documentary "The Eye needs to Travel" - hearing Vreeland's voice is essential.

Outrageous, colorful, and in no way 100% true, D.V. is an all around fun read! The vignettes of such larger than life characters such as Coco Chanel, the Duke and Duchess of Windsor, Charles Revson (he always had a look in his eyes), Aly Khan, General de Gaulle, and the rather dizzying array of other 20th century personalities who are given the D.V. treatment are pure fun. The inimitable Mrs. V. addresses the reader as if the two of you are nestled in a comfy corner in her living room, and she's confiding her memoirs, mixed with the advice a favorite aunt would give.I loved the descriptions of Mrs. V's personal style, from the cheapness of prewar couture, to the Chinese red nail lacquer, to her introduction of the thong sandal to America. I adored it all; the flamboyance, the insouciant commentaries on American hypocrisy, the rather sly way she comments on her dismissal from Vogue. What a personality!I'm off to search for a lady's maid; some shoes whose soles are worthy of polishing, so I can cross my legs in confidence; and for some silk underclothes in greige. Oh, wait. You say that's not possible in this day and age? No doubt the divine Mrs. V. would find a suitable replacement, and with her trademark style. If only she was still around!

I've heard that not every word of "D.V." is necessarily, you know, true. Well, whatever. In an age of fraud and being less than truthful to the public, it's permissible here because D.V. has such a good time, and really, we'll never know with someone who led a life that epitomized the meaning of glamor and style. D.V. is from the era just before tabloidery, going commando, and movie stars traveling with stylists, and her memoir is less about real events than how one person decided to do it all in grand style. While I usually balk at any personal histories that seem a bit too much on the "so privileged, la-di-dah" side, D.V.'s prose reveals only her elegance and her joy at being around style and trendsetting in all its forms - art, achievement, derring-do.Her madcap writing, asides, and tangents provide little snippets about how she felt people ought to comport themselves, and if you aren't terribly on the very serious side, you will enjoy it or at least enjoy getting to know Mrs. Vreeland. Let's hope that we make a return to style being something more than where you got your hat. Or let's bring back hats.

I just loved this book - I couldn't stop chuckling - one of the campiest things I've read since all the Patrick Dennis novels. I actually thought it was a straight forward biography, and I purchased it after watching a documentary of her on Amazon Prime, but I was pleasantly surprised to find it much more - after all, if I had wanted straight biography I could read wikipedia!

I am 99% sure that most of this is complete fabrication (polishing the soles of your shoes?) but I don't care. Diana Vreeland was a fashion icon who literally changed the way that fashion was done. From putting ethnic models on the pages of Vogue to championing designers who would become legends, she is responsible for the way fashion is reported today. This book is not only a must-have for lovers of fashion, it's the best ride since "Auntie Mame."
