I am an avid Jack Reacher (Lee Child) reader. I own his entire 21 book series and have read it several times. I'm always looking for similar action thrillers with strong male leads. Along the way I discovered Lucas Davenport, Virgil Flowers, and so on. But these Mitch Rapp series never seem to show up on my recommendations until recently. I read the reviews...they all seem to put Mitch in the same category as my other favs. WooHoo....finally....another series discovered. I started with American Assassin, listed as Mitch Rapp #1. It was okay...the writing was not as I expected it would be but decided perhaps it was a function of character development and I needed to give the author another shot. So I read KillShot, listed as Mitch Rapp #2. Eh.....it was okay too...a little better. Then I had to decided if to continue or just search for another series I might like better. What the heck!?!?! I bought Transfer of Power, listed as Mitch Rapp #3. WOW!! What a diference....spectacular book....had trouble putting it down...was staying up half the night!! After finishing with it, I purchased the rest of the series and did a little more research on Vince Flynn. I found that he had passed away in 2013 and the 1st 2 novels were written as a sort of "prequel" for the series by another writer, Kyle Mills. I'm sure it is difficult to insert yourself into the writing style of another author, especially if you're trying to go backwards and "redevelop" an existing character. If I'd paid attention to the published dates, I probably would have figured this out and started with the 3rd one. This is certainly not meant to slam Kyle Mills as an author. But in comparison to the 3rd book in the series and forward, the first 2 prequels seemed cumbersome, forced and left questions unanswered.
By wildly exclaiming this one November morning in 2012, former “Morning Joe†Host Mike Barnicle summarily captured what I believe to be the essence of all of Vince Flynn’s novels, with this, “Executive Power,†his fourth in the Mitch Rapp series, being no exception. Being his first post-9/11 work, we see an interesting and clear shift in both his strategic and tactical plotting and this, in my estimation, is due both to his maturity as a novelist and the circumstances of his very expansive story. And by this growth, we the reader become the benefactor of a much more encompassing and sweeping style, one which includes a much more layered and multi-peopled narrative, more so than any previous Flynn work.The story begins with the news that an American family, the Andersons, have been kidnapped while vacationing in the Philippines by a terrorist group, the Abu Sayyaf. An initial rescue attempt by U.S. Navy Seals has been mysteriously compromised resulting in two Seals dead and others injured and the leak is feared to have come from within the U.S. government. Meanwhile, a covert Palestinian assassin has joined forces with an estranged and slightly unhinged Saudi Prince to hatch an elaborate plot to win (finally) a sovereign Palestinian state…but to do so will involve violent uprisings against Arab/Palestinian groups fighting for the very same outcome and exposing Israel as the responsible agent, all on the eve of a UN vote for global support of just such a nation (these complexities are made much more clear in the narrative).These seemingly unrelated events have one commonality of course, and that is our main character Mitch Rapp. Newly married and believing that he can now carry a more conservative worldview with respect to his involvement with covert ops, he initially inserts himself only in an oversight role in the mission to rescue the Andersons…in fact he promises his new bride, network news reporter Anna Reilly, and also his boss, CIA Director Irene Kennedy, that he will stay out of harm’s way. This proves to be a fool’s errand of course and we watch Rapp slowly sinking himself deeper and deeper into the mission objectives.Meanwhile the Palestinian assassin proceeds unabated…Flynn expertly develops this plotline in parallel with the Anderson rescue mission planning and only has it converge at the very moment when they actually need to intertwine, keeping the reader guessing along the way. Flynn, to me, is also amazing here with his research, expertly documenting everything from weapons details to U.S. strategic contingencies, to military strategy and command, again, topics that he’d been in command of in earlier works but now in greater detail and in greater service to the story.We also see Flynn grow on the political front as well with the inner workings of the White House on full display as President Hayes and CIA Director Kennedy deal with multiple crisis. NSA meetings in the Situation Room, the Cabinet Room for special meetings with Congressional members and the Oval are constant storylines here, full of Flynn strategy sessions and think-tank-like outcomes. Major portions of this book evolve out of expert meetings in these locales, just like in real-life situations, greatly adding to the veracity of this work.In the end, I don’t think that it’s too much of a spoiler to say that the good guys win and Rapp is the hero…that’s really why we buy and read these books isn’t it? Vince Flynn continues to build his reputation and literary chops with Executive Power and I am thoroughly enjoying reading his catalogue and I know that I will equally dread it when I reach the end (I refuse to read and cannot understand how anyone can buy a “Vince Flynn†book written by anyone else). For now though I, gratefully, have many more to go.
I love Vince Flynn and his work. Such a fantastic author and I totally get the accurate progression of Mitch's career. It all went downhill when he got married to that reporter. She put a noose around Mitch and now we have a Mitch Rapp novel where he isn't sending terrorists to meet their virgins in the sky. Nope Mr. Rapp seems rather domesticated now. Not sure i was ready for that. Still in Flynn fashion he wrote an entertaining, suspenseful novel that I did enjoy although to give you an idea about the edge of your seat excitement level, it took me over 2 weeks to read this novel.I finished very other Flynn/Rapp novel preceding this one within 3 days. So this one wasn't really one of those "once I picked it up I could not put it down!" type of books. I unfortunately put it down several times and even dozed off a few times. (Very late at night mind you but another Flynn novel would have kept me awake. )I'm not saying don't get it, I am saying that this book has a bit of a bit different Mitch Rapp than we are accustomed to. Still - it is a good entertaining book.
I don't think Vince Flynn is capable of writing a boring novel. Executive Power is fast paced and Mitch Rapp is deadly efficient (as usual). The big issue I have is that the separate story lines are just that, entirely separate. You have Rapp in the Phillipines, pursuing Islamic extremists who have kidnapped an American family, and then you have Rapp back in the U.S. tracking down a shadowy Mid-Eastern terrorist, and the two story lines have nothing in common (aside from Rapp's involvement). What you end up with is a couple of short stories that move quickly to a somewhat predictable (but still satisfying) conclusion. My guess would be that Flynn had a couple of ideas for stories and instead of expanding them or integrating them in some way, he just plugged them into the same book.
