I've used this book since the mid 80's and recently bought it for my son-in-law.For anyone who wants to communicate with others, this book is an essential tool. It is essential for those who are trying to develop their own thoughts and form the words that describe those thoughts, especially of abstractions.The book gives examples for usage which further reinforces the distinctive use of each synonymous word.A quick example considers words such as love and hate. Of the synonyms, love notes feelings with the inclusion of passion, such as love for one's country. As a diametrical opposite, hate connotes an intense dislike causing avoidance and gives a literary reference by Shaw, thus, "hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated".I particularly like this last example as it helps me understand the reactions and inabilities of a lot of people.If knowledge is power, then words are the conveyance of that power and this book provides those words.
I've had this particular dictionary many years and found it to be extremely useful in my writing. I wanted to give one as a gift to a young friend who is college-bound. What I got was exactly what I ordered and it was in mint condition. In fact, it was the same edition that I have used for many years. Extremely pleased.
I found this book extremely useful. Thus far, I had always depended on a Harrap's for prompt and efficient assistance for synonymns. Hence I have used a Harrap's for many years. I found this Merriam Webster's a refreshing change, and felt that it offered a great range of possibilities. I liked the way of presentation. I have yet to get accustomed to regular use of it, but know that I will make greater use of it now that I have it readily available. I have it within arm's reach, so that when I am writing something, and need to check, that I'd be able to try something new and different; also something of a high grade and quality.The fact that it is a book which gives value for money in its quantity of content as well, gives reason for commendation.
I’m completely not satisfied, because I payed for new book which supposed to be a gift for my husband and came to me damaged because of not proper way of packaging. Something like this never happened to me, I’m disappointed and I think someone needs to give me some money back. Thank you
Throw away your Roget. This book discriminates between the subtle meanings of synonyms where Roget presents only a list - and a tired list at that. Excellent way to expand and refine one's vocabulary. Indispensable for finding that right word when writing a paper.
It is a milestone work.
I first discovered this wonderful book in high school, 1957. What I learned was that synonyms may mean the same thing, but they each carry a different connotation. Often the connotation must be correct to carry the meaning you intended. Roget's Thesaurus may get you close, but you need the MW Dictionary of Synonyms to hit the target. For people who like to write and speak correctly, this is a must. I don't believe this is in print any longer, so get yours while they last.JR The Whale
