A great book for viewing ethnic wonderful Chinese Costumes. Will be adding more of these to my library. Unfortunately, this title is no longer showing as available. Great for Designing ideas. Costumes have the feel of real fabric flow. Chinese Opera Costumes Paper Dolls

I ordered this book for my Chinese opera unit with 3rd grade. Useful for them to get acquainted with Chinese fashion style. Sturdy construction and a wide variety of styles.

Bought for my granddaughter. She had just returned from spending 6 mos. in China with her mom.

I grew up in Chinatown LA. My parents dragged me to many Chinese operas. Even when I had no idea what they were singing, the beautiful costumes and makeup and spectacle were dazzling. This compendium is a wonderful introduction to the art form. I adore paper dolls in general, but Dover paper doll series also instructs. The art work and detail of the costumes are wonderful.

Moses: When Harriet Tubman Led Her People to Freedom (Caldecott Honor Book), by Carole Boston Weatherford Kadir Nelson

From School Library Journal

Starred Review. Grade 2-5–Tubman's religious faith drives this handsome, poetic account of her escape to freedom and role in the Underground Railroad. The story begins with Tubman addressing God on a summer night as she is about to be sold south from the Maryland plantation where she and her husband live: I am Your child, Lord; yet Master owns me,/drives me like a mule. In resounding bold text, God tells her He means for her to be free. The story is sketched between passages of prayerful dialogue that keep Tubman from giving up and eventually call upon her to be the Moses of [her] people. Deep scenes of night fill many double pages as the dramatic paintings follow her tortuous journey, arrival in Philadelphia, and later trip to guide others. Shifting perspectives and subtle details, such as shadowy forest animals guarding her while she sleeps, underscore the narrative's spirituality. Whether filled with apprehension, determination, or serenity, Tubman's beautifully furrowed face is expressive and entrancing. A foreword briefly explains the practice of slavery and an appended note outlines Tubman's life. The words and pictures create a potent sense of the harsh life of slavery, the fearsome escape, and one woman's unwavering belief in God.–Margaret Bush, Simmons College, Boston Copyright © Reed Business Information, a division of Reed Elsevier Inc. From Booklist

Weatherford's handsome picture book about Harriet Tubman focuses mostly on Tubman's religious inspiration, with echoes of spirituals ringing throughout the spare poetry about her struggle ("Lord, don't let nobody turn me 'round"). God cradles Tubman and talks with her; his words (printed in block capitals) both inspire her and tell her what to do ("SHED YOUR SHOES; WADE IN THE WATER TO TRICK THE DOGS"). Nelson's stirring, beautiful artwork makes clear the terror and exhaustion Tubman felt during her own escape and also during her brave rescue of others. There's no romanticism: the pictures are dark, dramatic, and deeply colored--whether showing the desperate young fugitive "crouched for days in a potato hole" or the tough middle-aged leader frowning at the band of runaways she's trying to help. The full-page portrait of a contemplative Tubman turning to God to help her guide her people is especially striking. Hazel RochmanCopyright © American Library Association. All rights reserved

I bought this to give to an adult English as a Second Language student. She absolutely adores it. We've read it twice. It made her cry because she sympathizes with Harriet so much. And my student is very religious, so she loves Harriet talking with God. It also encouraged her in her own writing. The illustrations are beautiful and tell the story even without the words - good for teaching extensive reading.I can't say how the book would go over with kids, but this teacher and her low intermediate student give it four enthusiastic thumbs up.

This book is so good! Wonderfully written account of Harriet Tubman and her role in the Underground Railroad. It brought me to tears the way it was written. Perfect for young kids and old alike.

Great book and easy for children to read and understand.

I loved the interaction between God and Harriet. It's an inspiring story about faith and perseverance. My son and I truly enjoy this book!

This is so beautiful and lyrically written.. Buy this book to honor a true heroine of slavery. My 4 year olds loved it and i loved reading it. This is our 10th slavery book and my favorite along with "Henrys Freedom Box". If your wondering how to talk to your kids about slavery times, this is a good start.

This book is very touching and inspirational. I enjoy reading it to my 5-yr old.

Great read and would be a good addition to the classroom.

I purchased 12 books for Black History Month and my son loved this one especially. The pictures are brilliant and the story is beautifully written for young minds to understand.

Conquest of the Useless: Reflections from the Making of Fitzcarraldo, by Werner Herzog

Review

“Hypnotic...Any book by Mr. Herzog...turns his devotees into cryptographers. It is ever tempting to try to fathom his restless spirit and his determination to challenge fate.” (Janet Maslin, New York Times)“Reveals Herzog to be witty, compassionate, microscopically observant and—your call—either maniacally determined or admirably persevering.” (Los Angeles Times)“Stands alone as a compellingly gonzo piece of reportage. . . . As a read, Conquest flies along—but not because it’s especially plotty. Rather, it gathers its kick from the spectacle of a celebrity director escaping the late–’70s famescape into his own obsessions.” (Time Out New York)“Those who haven’t encountered Herzog on screen will undoubtedly be drawn in by the director’s lyricism, while cinephiles will relish the opportunity to retrace the steps of one on the medium’s masters.” (Publishers Weekly)“Urgent and compelling. . . . A valuable historical record and a strangely stylish, hypnotic literary work.” (Kirkus Reviews)

From the Back Cover

Werner Herzog is one of our most revered contemporary filmmakers, a visionary director who ceaselessly tests the boundaries of art. Fitzcarraldo, his lavish 1982 film about a would-be rubber baron who pulls a steamship over a hill to access a rich rubber territory, was hailed by critics around the globe and won Herzog the 1982 Outstanding Director Prize at Cannes. The text of Conquest of the Useless emerged as if out of an Amazonian fever dream: the crew's camp in the heart of the jungle was attacked and burned to the ground; the production clashed with a border war; two planes crashed during filming; and Herzog had to unravel the logistics of moving a 320-ton steamship over a hill without the use of special effects.More than just a journal or diary of the shooting of Fitzcarraldo, Conquest of the Useless is a work of art unto itself, which charts the inner landscapes born of the delirium of the jungle and offers an extraordinary glimpse into the mind of a genius during the making of one of his greatest achievements.

Probably the one book I'd take to a desert island or prison. Herzog kept a journal making Fitzcarraldo and for some reason wrote in a tiny book in a tiny handwritten font that nearly required a magnifying glass to read (thankfully it's not reproduced here). He wrote quite a bit, and not only are some of the stories of making the film utterly fascinating (and have checked out as true), but Herzog's brutally honest approach is very endearing and at times tragic (such as missing his son while he is away filming). I like this one a bit more than Walking in Ice, because Ice is a very solitary journey, but Conquest has other characters, such as Les Blank, Herzog's family at the time, the cast and crew, local people, etc. Conquest shows that Herzog is at root a very good writer, and I think this book contains some of the best writing he's ever done anywhere, be it screenplay (the screenplay for Fitzcarraldo could be seen as a companion piece to this book and is also very good, especially since it doesn't follow the cookie cutter screenplay format) , books, interviews, or narration in documentaries. Highly, highly recommended.

Herzog's massively enjoyable diary effuses wildly tangential impressions: mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic sensory apprehensions, hallucinogenic stories, transient characters, and ubiquitous dread. His core narrative is ethereal; the story progresses primarily as a reaction to Herzog's descriptions of grotesque jungle life, and the even more grotesque life of an independent filmmaker who wishes to pull a ship over a mountain. The result is a type of realism, the reality of which arises from a similarity to human memory. We remember things the way Herzog describes them here, as landscapes characterized by their peaks: heightened tangents, particular vivid sensations, and characters who fade from our lives as quickly and as fully as Mick Jagger disappeared from the Peruvian jungle. Herzog's form of description resembles to me Tarkovsky's exposition of memory in his film Mirror, which is realistic in the same way. If a man could pour his memory into film, it would appear on film as in Mirror, and on paper as in Herzog's Conquest. Highly recommended.

Much as I love Herzog's films I did not expect his observations made while making even a movie as outrageous as Fitzcarraldo to be all THAT interesting. Perhaps I feared the opposite, that they would be too interesting - the weird factor infusing his ruminations with a delirium that would irritate me. As it turns out, the way Herzog documents what he sees and experiences is pitch perfect, avoiding a self-indulgence that generally pervades these things. He cannot avoid himself, his idiosyncrasies and imagination, nor can he ignore the bizarre circumstances. But I never feel that Herzog is demonstrating what a unique genius observes and how it expresses itself. His fodder is inherently fantastic and he has the sense to keep it simple. His notes are engrossing, visual, and yes, at times magically real but everything is somehow grounded. I should have known Herzog's exquisite sense of things would enable him to express the outrageous and fantastic without sacrificing, how Gauguin put it, "The flat sound of my wooden clogs on the cobblestones, deep, hollow and powerful..." Herzog's objective observations of suffering at times added a painful edge to the book. Not that the observations are devoid of compassion, but and good, melodrama is avoided. I fear I'd have been driven mad by all those pleading eyes and desperate creatures: live chickens tied by their legs, dangling off the back of a motorcycle, being choked by dust as their heads bounce on the road; dogs tied up, stranded, thirsty, starving and covered in sores; helpless children - the relentless Amazon. Conquest Of The Useless is one of the most engrossing books I've ever read. For some reason I kept caring.

This book is only peripherally about the film Fitzcarraldo. Yes, it talks about the production, the actors, the budget and more, but the book itself is really more of a look inside Herzog's mind as he works on the film. It is fascinating, very funny, and ultimately very enjoyable. I recommend it for all readers, not just students of film.

Herzog is a unique geniuse who produced this unique work. These are almost hallucinatory notes reflecting his thoughts as he made Fitzcarraldo. Dreams enter into rich descriptions. Some sections may make little sense but the book as a whole reveals how his force of will and vision created the movie. For anyone interested in the making of movies, a creative mind under very difficult circumstances, or the life in a jungle or on a movie shot in location, this book is a must.

Everything Perfect! In my country is impossible to find this book, and you did it so easy to me!!! Time and product Ok! Thank you so much!!! I Recommend 100% this seller.

Poignantly describes the trials of everyday life in the jungle and the physical and psychological effects on people. This background material greatly enhances the impact of the film. Glad I found this remarkable book.

This is a fascinating, startingly moving diary. It brings eloquence and artistry to a usually mundane form. I wonder how much Herzog edited these entries, if at all, and if he was thinking of publishing them as he wrote them. I'd love to think they were just his daily scribbles, used to keep himself sane under his burden of dreams. However, if they were contrived to a certain degree all the more power to him for his writerly skill.Great fun to watch the movie again as you read along with his tribulations. Was especially moved by his tendency to describe things as though they were happening in some somnolent state in a country that only existed in his dreams and then how he would effortlessly switch to telling us what he had for lunch. An audio recording of Herzog himself reading these diaries would be priceless. I'd imagine the absurdity would be operatic.
