An eight-year-old Inuit child from Banks Island in far northern Canada desperately wanted to learn to read English like her older sister, but her father refused to let her attend the Indian Residential School. However, her persistent pleading wore away his resistance, and he consented. They made the five-day trek to the Catholic-run school where Olemaun was stripped of her Native identity-her hair, her clothes, even her name. She was allowed to keep only her beloved copy of Alice in Wonderland. Renamed Margaret, she clung to her desire to learn to read, enduring humiliation and harsh treatment from cruel nuns and unkind classmates. She instinctively knew that literacy was powerful, and she used it to give her courage and "to carry [her] far away from the laughter." In a showdown with a nun, Margaret defied the insensitive teacher, who in turn tried to humiliate Margaret by demanding that she read a difficult passage aloud in class. In When I Was Eight readers get to see what it was like for a young Inuit girl to leave her family for a residential school. There are some very negative experiences there for her, but it is also a time for her to discover her own strength and determination.I have been happy to see more and more children's literature and non-fiction about the residential school era in North America. This is a time in history that our country should know about and should remember. I think there has been healing in the sharing of these stories and the more people that hear them, the better off we all are.This also fills a gap that we have. I am looking forward to more picture book memoirs like this.

When I Was Eight by Christy Jordan-Fenton and Margaret Pokiak-Fenton is an adaptation of Fatty Legs, in which Olemaun recollects her negative experiences in a church-run residential school. Because I have read both books, as I review When I Was Eight, I will also be comparing and contrasting the two versions.I'll start with what I liked about When I Was Eight. The well-crafted writing style stands out more in When I Was Eight. There are many active verbs, such as "shrugged" and "begged". In addition, there's a lot of figurative language, such as "the sun slept" and "slumbering ice". The strong word choices exist in Fatty Legs too, but they feel more prevalent and significant in a picture book. When I Was Eight would make for an excellent mentor text in elementary schools.When I Was Eight is also more focused than Fatty Legs. The latter is about Olemaun (Margaret's Inuit name) and her family, her friends, her desire to read, her conflicts with a mean nun and brother, and more. In contrast, When I Was Eight is solely about Oleman's determination to read enabling her to withstand all forms of abuse from a nameless nun. In fact, the story is so tightly told that it develops a fairy tale quality, where the young heroine must battle an evil grown-up. Because of its overt theme, teachers could use When I Was Eight to help reluctant readers see how the power of books can change them.Next, I'll turn to what I didn't like about When I Was Eight. Due to the brevity of text required of a picture book, some important details were left out. For example, When I Was Eight tells readers that Olemaun enters the laundry room, stands beside a huge vat, and then "gets an idea" about how to get rid of the red stockings. In contrast, Fatty Legs tells readers tells how a tear vanishing into bubbling water gives her that idea.In my review of Fatty Legs, I highlighted its realistic characters because sometimes books that depict atrocities resort to portraying all of the "enemy" as evil but Fatty Legs avoided that trap. Well.... as I review When I Was Eight has eliminated the friend who provided support to Olemaun, and the kind nun, and really anyone who seemed nice. Instead Olemaun is on her own in her determination to read.Some critics have lamented the absence of a historical note in as I review When I Was Eight . I have mixed feelings about this. On one hand, in Fatty Legs I greatly appreciated the scrapbook and other supplementary material that provided context for the story. I ended up wanting to read more Inuit stories. On the other hand, the historical notes meant while reading Fatty Legs I remained keenly aware that I was learning about a real time and a real place. Whereas, as I noted above, When I Was Eight was more like a fairy tale.Both approaches serve a purpose, as does having two versions that are intended for different readers. Each book provides a glimpse into the way of life of the Inuit, while also containing an inspiring universal message. There are two more books in the set, another chapter and picture book combo. It'll be interesting to see what Christy Jordan-Fenton writes next about her mother-in-law's experiences of growing up Inuit.

"When I Was Eight" is a poignant tale of an eight-year-old Inuit girl named Olemaun whose one desire above all else is to read. She wishes to go to the outsider's school (Reservation school) but her father doesn't want to send her for reasons Olemaun comes to understand much later. When she does attend the school, Olemaun finds herself and the other Inuit students being put to work, doing menial chores, and sadly, Olemaun becomes the target of a cruel nun who taunts and humiliates the young girl.The story is depressing but as my eight-year-old read this to me during our nightly bedtime reading, we both rejoiced in Olemaun's tenacity and fierce determination to not only rise above her oppression but to also realize her dream of learning to read. Yes, the story is incredibly sad, especially when one considers the abominable treatment these young children had to endure in a place that was meant to shelter, care for, and educate them. I spent some time discussing the themes in the book with my young daughter and she expressed happiness and relief that Olemaun was able to learn to read, despite all that she had endured.After reading "When I Was Eight", I discovered that the author had also written Fatty Legs: A True Story, which is a chapter book on a similar theme geared towards readers ages 9 and up. My daughter has expressed interest in reading the book, and I for one intend to read Broken Circle: The Dark Legacy of Indian Residential Schools.

We read "When I Was Eight" for our homeschool history study. We also read "Not My Girl". I recommend reading both books together for a more complete picture of Olemaun's experiences. Both books were beautifully written and illustrated, and made even more special because they are true. Written from the perspective of an eight year old child, "When I Was Eight" was very accessible for my second grader, and she really connected to Olemaun, and the story of being bullied by an adult (a mean nun) and having to be resourceful and tenacious in order to survive and thrive in an alien and hostile environment (the school). Written from the perspective of a ten year old in "Not My Girl", Olemaun has feelings of not fitting in when she returned to her family, but there is so much love and patience from her parents that she finally feels at home again. We loved both of these books so much we are planning to also read the longer books as well ("Fatty Legs" and "A Stranger at Home").Thank you to the authors and illustrator for such a valuable document written for children.This review was written by alias "Jumping Fish", age seven:" I read the book "When I Was Eight". I tried. I really did. But it is hard to read a book that the h is a bitch and the attitude is too much. No background development and the BFFs are dingbat! I made it to chapter 8. The typos were too much and if I see a dash instead of a line of periods for a pause ever again I may have to hurt someone. She used it too often. WAY TOO OFTEN. She comes off as crass and not in a good or funny way. Save your money and don't buy this book I wish i did. I didn't read the reviews on this before I bought it and now I wish I did.

Lindsey Hart's Married by Mistake is a fun, delightful read. It's all about having the courage to trust again, and turning the biggest mistake in your life into the best thing that ever happened to you. I love books with no cheating, a HEA, lots of steam, and a storyline with little twists, surprises, and some humor thrown in. I was so impressed with this book- Lindsey' s newest is her best so far, and I've liked them all. Reading it was definitely NOT a mistake! In fact, I liked it so much I bought a copy.I received an advance reader copy of this book. I read it and am offering my honest, voluntary review. I liked it so much I bought the book!

June and Brock wake up together after a crazy drunken night together. They don't remember what they did but know that they're married now. June just wants to end it and put it in the past but Brock thinks they need to give it a few days before they call it quits. Brock plans to win her over during this time and he pulls out all the stops to get her to enjoy spending time with him. June starts feeling drawn toward him even though she tries to fight it but Brock finally gets his wish and she stays with them for an entire night of talking to get to know each other before they ended up in bed. However the next morning she learns that he hasn't been truthful about who he is. Can she forgive him this lie of omission? Will Brock give up and give her the divorce she says she wants?This is an amazing story that will captivate you from beginning to end. The chemistry between them is blazing hot. This is a well written and very entertaining story. I would recommend this book to any book lover.I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

Wow I loved this book , there was humor and two people who got married while drunk and a bet on a poker hand. June was in Vegas trying to get over her boyfriend cheating on her with another man. Brock was in Vegas trying to just get a rest from people and work . Brock was a billionaire and when he woke up both him and June didn't remember getting married . Brock wanted to try and make the marriage work and asked June to try for the weekend and maybe stay married. This is really a very HEA story .

An enjoyable fun, delightful well written story. This was an awesome journey with laughter, love and a drunken marriage with a strong sexual connection and off the charts chemistry can they have a HEA.? The charaters were funny, interesting and had a great funny supportive cast of secondary characters.

A short quick heart warming romance, I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their story. This was a non-stop cover to cover read for me,I couldn't put it down. Two jaded souls meet in Los Vegas, they make a bet and that's when the story really gets interesting. This is one book you won't want to miss.

This book was boring. No character development, no plot and lots of errors. Not well written and no story really.

As a homeschool mom, I have to say the John Bunyan books are a wonderful addition to our home library! The Holy War is a great read-aloud for the family and perfect for long discussions about the deeper meaning woven throughout the text.This is a classic Christian book that is probably geared more for older students and adults, but with a bit of guidance, can be easily used for the younger family members as well. As a matter of fact, I've found that they soak up more than we realize when reading out loud.John Bunyan is an eloquent and descriptive writer whose imagination is only overshadowed by his love for the Lord - both characteristics come through loud and clear in this updated version of the book. If you liked Pilgrim's Progress, you will love this story!

"The Holy War" is an allegorical tale of how the town of Mansoul deals with the deceptions and attacks of Diabolus and his demon cohorts. I've read this story three times in the original, once as a read-aloud to my children.Now, I understand Bunyan was attempting to make a point, but it bothered us how Emmanuel promises the Mansoulians he'll never leave them, but when they get distracted and don't give him the attention he wants, he withdraws to his father's palace. It was because of this that the children sympathized more with Diabolus than with Emmanuel. Under Diabolian rule, the Mansoulians are prosperous and happy. Then Emmanuel comes along and makes them jump through hoops to keep his favor. Where's the grace in that?But I love this book and how it makes you think. E.g., Feel Gate is the weakest gate in the city. And where do our doubts plague us most but in our feelings? We know better; we believe otherwise; but those pesky feelings can really throw our faith for a loop.As far as this updated edition goes, when I was reading the original to my children, there were times I had to pause and paraphrase what Bunyan meant. A modernized version might have made it easier. Either way, it's a good book.

This is an excellent allegory on the battle we face as we wrestle with God. We can be certain of one thing as we walk with Christ we are to be prepared for battle.This book was a moving reminder of the battle The Lord fought to wrestle me into His kingdom.It also reminds me of the importance of wrestling in prayer for the souls of others.

Loved this book as much as Pilgrim's Progress. The allegorical metaphors bring these concepts to life.

Interesting book for any1 who wants to read about the reality of the devil’s intent to enslave.

Excellent good read.

I liked Pilgrim’s Progress when I read it years ago. I love The Holy War! It is a beautiful, exciting and scriptural allegory of the Savior’s pursuit and providence of His church. In my opinion this is Bunyan’s opus.

The first of several Harmony novels by the Friends theologian and pastor Phil Gulley. Suffice it to say that the first page was so funny that I read it twice and showed it to a friend, not a Quaker, who found it even funnier (being a man; there were other reasons, but they would be distracting).The book is clearly a first novel; there are a few flaws and perhaps--I won't assert this fully, as it may be my problem--a masculinist prose that I'd have enjoyed a bit more had it been more general. (It's hard to say this, as I'm not sure it's that big a problem, if a problem at all.) But it's a very entertaining, sincere book, highly realistic about the inner workings of meeting politics and the difficulties of finding perfection in mortal being. And wonderfully witty. It gives, if the reader is interested, a good view of how a Friends meeting works and what its values should be and sometimes are. I've ordered the next book and will read them all. It might be of importance to note that this book is contemporary: You will not find the Quaker Oats hats (which actually aren't Quaker); nor will the ladies wear long gray dresses and white aprons (no aprons at all, in fact). It's today's small-town life from a particular point of view. Very enjoyable and a generous, realistic spirit pervades the novel.

THOUGHTS ON RUNNING AWAYIN THE past when I wanted to get out of a not so wonderful situation happening in my life, I either turned my back on it and pretended I wasn’t there or I actually left . In other words I ran away. Sometimes when I couldn’t handle having to be in the situation, as it called for me to be able to make decisions, I ate my way through tons of chocolate. I found chocolate pretzels were very satisfying.after waking up and growing up I becoming more enlightened about my poor behavior. I said to God, OK I will be here and do my duty I know its my responsibilities I ran away from. I tried hard to be focused on the problems of my life and to live up to the challenge of howGod wanted me to be there …( as I couldn’t be any place else) and work through the problems that were accosting me. I tried hard not to run away from my responsibilities. God doesnt drop problems on me , life does,. Now that I am trying to enjoy letting God solve the problems with me rather than trying to cope with them alone I have found a great deal of peace. Now I run to God who gathers me up in his arms and sits me on his lap and reads to me.You might think that is easy but we have to find time to do this and here is the way it works ;Mornings are dedicated to all the issues of the day and then you get hungryNoon is the time to fill the food basket your earring around and then comes the best time of all.I get in my recliner( as all 82year olds seem to have one ), Kick out the foot rest, and grab my Ipad( again the new age of books) and open to the page I left off on and …….there I go on a journey to another land. I am sometimes in ‘south carolina or Ireland or right now I am in Indiana in a small town called Harmony. God grants me a few hours to run away in books, I have chosen some great ones with his help.If you are prone to running away you might try staying close to the phone and the problems that accost you with the advantage of being able to get on the space ship that the books on the I pad provide.No chocolates just a good pair of reading glasses and your on your way.. I am enjoying being in Harmony with Sam and his wife Barbara and two sons. Harmony is located in a very small town in the middle of Indiana, you say you cant locate it on the atlas, that is true as the town is hiding under the staple holding the page in the atlas of Rand McNallyOnce your there you will meet Sams community. He was born and raised there and after a jaunt to college and a job in another town he came back to his home town to take over the leadership of theFriends meeting, and work with the Friendly Women as they called their group. His writing style is very real, like I was there. Funny, sad, thought provoking. I never knew a Quaker pastor before but now I am in love with Harmony. cant wait to read the next book Phillip Gulley writes. Try HOME TO HARMONY

I absolutely love the Harmony series. These books make me laugh out loud and ponder life. I highly recommend them no matter what your religious affiliation or non-affiliation. I do see that some reviewers think he's not the right kind of religious for them, but that's too bad. I have a very hard time with religious people thinking they have all the answers and the other guys don't. I like how he pokes fun at all of us flawed human beings; without a sense of humor, life is pretty rigid. I plan to read every single thing Philip Gulley has written and I enjoy his columns in Indianapolis Monthly magazine. I'm not a church goer, but I would go to his church. I'm not sure a minister would want that sort of recommendation, but I think his approach to religion is softer and kinder and what it should be like.

I have to admit, I'm stuck half way through this. But every time I go back to it, I don't know why I stopped reading it. I bought it while researching utpoias and visions of the afterlife for my MA, because even though it is not a utopia of vision of the afterlife, it is a fictional world where the problems are small, even if they represent the same sins that writ large destroy lives and society.But if you like Andy Griffith Show and his adventures in Mayberry (and I do), this is that, but with homily tossed in.

Homey and heartwarming writing - very refreshing in these coarse-edged times. However, I don't agree with Publisher's Weekly comparison that it is "in a league with Jan Karon's 'Mitford' series". Her novels follow a story line which progresses forward and develops a plot, whereas Mr. Gulley's writing is more like a series of essays on life in a small town. He jumps around in time throughout the book; past to present and back. Both authors' character descriptions are similar, agreed.I'm not familiar with the Quakers, but learned some interesting things about their faith.

I stumbled onto this book on a Kindle sale and was at first wondering why Gulley was compared to James Harriott and Jan Karon. Now, halfway through the book, I agree. The reason I recommend it to those who think Christians are hypocrites is that Gulley does a fine job of exposing those who claim to be Christian but are doing evil instead of good. The book seems a bit choppy at times, but each chapter has a point to make and I find myself laughing out loud quite often.

All you really need is price, volume, support, resistance and candlesticks (and just a mere few of those). What a pleasure looking at an uncomplicated chart. For the first time I am consistently making money as a swing trader, using 5m,15 m, 1H and 1 day time frames. The 1h and 1D are for establishing the support & resistance lines. I do the analysis and make the trade in the 15m...the 5m is used for entry/exit timing only.However, though the text and concepts are 5 star, the small black and white charts with tiny candlesticks in two shades of grey are almost unintelligible.

This is the second book by Anna C. that I have read. I like the way she writes; putting the complicated items of all currencies and related economics into simpler and usable terms and idea pictures that I can relate to. I read slowly as a rule, just for the enjoyment of the journey, but her books I not only enjoy slowly but find myself re-reading parts and often stopping to think about what she has just written. File this book under: Thought Provoking, Very Informative, Very Useful.

Big props to the author as i really enjoyed this book...to be honest it was even better than john murphy's intermarket analyis.Very well written, and by that I mean that everything is explained with a degree of simplicity leaving out the majority of unnecessary information thats useless for trading. Reading this with prior experience in the field allows u to appreciate it even more.its important to understand that this in not a trading system....but more importantly its an "approach" to how to analyze, prepare and overall read the market.the burden of turning this analysis into money will always lie on each individual trader and their specific trading approach.(im new to the volume analysis stuff...but has been a useful tool for me with very short term trading)

Local influences as well as the influence in each of the countries by Forex pairs is covered in-depth.Only wish Anna would publish an update ;)

I have just finished reading A Three Dimensional Approach to Forex Trading. It has provided me with a clear path to trading. I have read many books on the subject but this information provides a clear and concise approach as to what information to obtain about the currencies. Such as, interest rates for carry trade, import & export statistics, etc. The section on VPA was especially helpful. This book has provided me with the knowledge and confidence to make educated and informed decisions to make successful trades.

I learned much from this book because it gets very deeply into the subject matter. While I am trading differently now, with a mathematical algorythm not requiring fundamentals of any of those things, I believe the information here is valuable. I found this to be surprisingly insightful and compelling—both about the life of a carpenter (as revealed step-by-step through a months-long renovation project) and about the wider world Ole Thorstensen moves about in...the tradespeople he interacts with, Norwegian culture, as well as his spot-on observations on everything from what goes into a job bid to the best music to listen to while working. I learned a lot about carpentry, about renovations, about Norway, about quality work, and about Thorstensen himself. And, on a practical level, I now feel better prepared to tackle my own renovation projects and to identify and work effectively with all the tradespeople I'm likely to encounter, including plumbers, painters, bricklayers, and architects.

All three loved it....One engineer woman, one woman contractor for building trades and on man who supervises a highly specialized contracts for modernizing hospitals.

Ole walks us through the demands and pleasures of his life as a carpenter embodied in a loft conversion. He writes as clearly as he no doubt works. I’d hire him.

This is a wonderful book, especially for readers who might wonder what's hidden inside the walls of their house or apartment building. Ole Thorstensen show the amazing complexity of a typical construction project, explaining the function of each support beam, pipe, and layer of plaster. If you're about to hire a contractor, you'll also get a better understanding of the economics of bids and construction work.

I enjoyed this book. It gives a good perspective of how a carpenter/remodeler committed to good work carries out his profession. There's a bit of a cultural difference for me as an American reading this book by a Norwegian and I think I would enjoy an American book of the same type. But, it is what it is, and it's a good work - nothing fancy, but an informative and interesting story.

I have been a quilter for over 20 years and this book helped me see color and fabrics in a whole new way. There is a great deal of detailed information about choosing fabrics and creating subtle color combinations. The projects in the book are stunning and relate directly to the color theory she is teaching. At the same time there is an expectation of a certain level of sewing skills. I would not recommend it to a beginner as I think they would have a difficult time constructing the projects.

This is Yoko Saito's best book. While it was not the first one I purchased, it helped me fully understand how to work with Japanese taupe fabrics, which are just luscious! I now own most or all of her books and after buying this one I was able to better understand and appreciate why projects in her subsequent books have such striking appeal.

If you already have some experience sewing this book will take you to the next level. I am in love with the Japanese esthetic and Yoko Saito's, Taupe Color Theory is a wonderful book for those like me who needed a refresher to inspire some ideas for small quilts or would be great for someone newly interested in Japanese Taupe quilting. The variety of quilt pattern styles as well as the gorgeous projects have really inspired me. I am partway through a lovely bag already. I look forward to creating many more projects inspired by this book.

Love these inspiring suggestions for using taupe colors in quilting and useful projects. This is another book my quilting friends have purchased after looking through it. A movement has been inspired by Yoko Saito's artful use of beautiful color and textures in our area. As Yoko herself was inspired by designs of quilts when she saw the American craft of quilting. Preferring handwork techniques to machine stitching, she has returned our attention to quality crafting with simple needle and thread.sw

The skill and artistry of this author's applique is just stunning! Her subtle use of color is refined, elegant and beautiful. I am in awe of her talent, but she provides such detailed instructions and helpful step-by-step photos, that I am tempted to try my hand. Even if I never make anything from this book, however, it was worth the money for the pleasure of seeing such beautiful work!

I bought this so I could follow along with others who wanted to work through the book on the blog "The Caffeinated Quilter." Keep in mind that the "Notes from the Publisher" in the beginning of the book clearly state that the techniques "might suggest that intermediate or advanced quilters will be more comfortable working on these projects." This is definitely true! This isn't a book for those just beginning to quilt. The author has assumed that the reader who buys this book already has basic skills required for piecing, drafting patterns, quilting, and following directions, and will have needle, thread, and other tools needed to pursue the projects (as an advanced quilter, I appreciated this, as so often most quilt books include introductory pages that I find repetitive). While many people balk at the cost of the book, if you're an experienced quilter, I can assure you that you'll get your money's worth. I have quite a few books in my craft library, but none have given me such challenge, joy, and satisfaction as this one. Many quilt books I buy have one or two projects that I'd like to do, but this one has a storehouse of information and projects. This is the layout of the book: Chapter 1 is "20 Taupe Color Collections: Lessons in pulling together taupe color collections and showcasing them using quilt blocks" and "The 5 Senses and Japanese Taupe Color Theory"; Chapter 2 is "14 Projects: Putting Taupe Color Theory into Practice"; Chapter 3 is "18 Taupe Color Projects to Make: 18 fun color collections reminiscent of favorite things." I have worked through twelve of the twenty color collections thus far, and I can't believe how much I've learned about the taupe color wheel and taupe color theory. I'm also in the midst of finishing one of the bags in the second section of the book. Another thing I like about this book is that most of the initial part of the projects entail hand-sewing and quilting, so it is easy to keep your current project in a basket to pick up when you have time (for those of us who work, this is a huge plus). You can work through each color theory "lesson" at your own pace and then choose other projects from the second part of the book when you want to do something new. This is also a beautiful book to look through (I wish it had the "Look Inside" feature so potential buyers could see some of the pages). I am so glad that Yoko Saito's books are being translated into English, and I hope that eventually all of her books will be translated. There is this lovely aesthetic in Japanese quilters' books that I really appreciate, reflected in diagrams or assumptions that the reader will intuitively know how to construct a purse, for example (though sometimes I wish they would share a few more steps!). Having said that, the challenge to figure things out might be part of the learning process too. I highly recommend this book to advanced quilters. It is a veritable treasure house of information and projects that will keep you busy for years, not just days.

A good review of Japanese taupes and how to combine them into beautiful projects. This isn't just a pattern book. It is more about taupes -- what they are, how to combine colors -- with a few patterns. I would call it more "educational" that her other books, but it wa just what I was looking for as a research tool before making a queen size taupe quilt.

I have at least 15 different Gita. This one is my favorite. The text is clear and easy to understand, even for me who's french is my first language. The hardback, deluxe edition is a beautiful book, solid and a book you will keep and read all your life.

It's about time that we get a new translation of the Bhagavad Gita. The most popular version nowadays seems to be Swami Prabhupada's version, but unfortunately, he seems to think he is god. Prasad takes a much more low-key approach, simply translating the Gita to the best of his ability and allowing the reader to make sense of it rather than forcing his own opinions on others. Any time there is the possibility of confusion, Prasad defines his terms and goes to the extra effort to make sure that what Vyasa was trying to describe is clear to even ones not familiar with Indian philosophy. More accurate than most other translations and rendered into modern prose, this makes an excellent place to start with if you're new to Eastern thought. Few terms are left in Sanskrit other than those that are necessary (Dharma, Karma, etc.). A wonderful addition to any seeker's library.

Excellent translation, it's easy to read and understand. Plus it isn't bogged down with ISKCON theology like the Prahupada translation and commentary.This a great translation to start memorizing from because the English flows smoothly and isn't loaded with untranslated Sanskrit terms.
