I have played and taught piano for over 50 years. I know that this method is highly esteemed, but I do not recommend it at all. I used to use it for teaching but the problem, in my opinion, is the placement of fingering numbers over every note. The students read the numbers, not the notes, and in doing so, fail to learn to read the notes themselves. Some of the information about phrasing and basic finger/wrist technique is helpful, and the retro illustrations are a bit of a hoot. Most of my students breeze through it easily, then Book Two arrives and the student is suddenly faced with the bitter reality that they must read notes and move their hands up and down the keyboard. It's overwhelming for many of them.If you decide to go with it, try to supplement it with some less heavily annotated material. There is much simple early music, for example, written in two parts. IMSLP offers much of this public domain material free of charge online.

The entire John Thompson series is as old as the hills, and I'm sure there are many piano teachers who would say that this series is outdated. There appear to be a lot of piano courses now that are specifically geared to different age groups. I have nothing against any of the other piano courses. But I am an older piano student with a goal to complete the entire John Thompson Course before I reach 70. I'll never be great, but this series pushes me to the max. And I appreciate the selection of songs that are presented in each book.Each student/teacher should negotiate the learning series that best fits the students learning style. For me, the John Thompson series is the core of my learning, and I supplement with books from other series. I also love the fact that I can listen to Alan Chan play every selection from the John Thompson series on You Tube. Listening to a quality rendition is most helpful in appreciating each piece before attempting to play the lesson.

Took up piano again and tried a couple of "adult" books but wasn't feeling the love. Finally remembered the name of these from my piano lessons 50 years ago. This series is the best, hands down.

These are the best books for learning the piano. I have been teaching piano lessons for over 10 years and have not found a better book series. I highly recommend these books. They are more difficult than Alfred's and others, but the return is just not as great with the other books. I have used several series and always come back to John Thompson. It cannot be beat!

I am 67 years old, and have spent a few years learning to play the piano. Learning comes slow to those of us who have so many old habits that now prove obstacles to new learning & must be revised to accommodate this learning.I teased my wonderfully patient teacher by chiding her for promoting me from kindergarten to third grade after only six years of study & practice. She appropriately told me I was rapidly progressing into piano.The book is very well presented and explains things like style, mood, interpretation, and form. The selections are all fun after appropriate practice and some helpful additional instruction. (One would likely be lost with this book not knowing a host of other technical details about printed music.)Unfortunately the author only mentions the more technique-oriented and/or technical challenges one faces at this time in one's study. His mention is only a paragraph aimed at selling another of his books on that topic. It is a mystery only booksellers can answer why he needed another book to contain his subject and mine instead of putting it all into one collection. A glimpse at the back cover illustrates the depths of this challenge: the author there offers another seven "third grade" music books.The book is also "modern" in the quaintly academic sense that it contains music from what the academics call the modern centuries (C16-C20); according to their preferred doctrines we now live in the "post modern" era which began sometime in the late 19th or early 20th centuries, the precise moment of its birth as yet unsettled.That is not necessarily wrong; we all need orientation from the past. But it is important also to not get lost in the past.

I use this book for students after they have completed John Thompson's Easiest Piano Course book one (teaches 10 notes F bass to G treble). I also use JT Easiest Piano Course 2 for younger students. This books adds three lower bass notes first, CDE and, after those are mastered, adds ABC to the Treble. It teaches much technique and allows the student to read, understand and master the notes, not just memorize.

I was brought up on John Thompson and am now using it to teach my piano students. Covers EVERYTHING. I add scale practice by Hanson as well. My students do very well with it!

Oldies, goodies. Thompson books begin with fingerings and five-finger hand positions, and some students have difficulty progressing to note reading. The books advance steadily and quickly from 1 to 5. Excellent literature, including some information about the composers.

suggest one read Dr. Tinker's books, and all of Vine DeLoria's books [God is Red], both of whom are native americans, for much needed balance to this book written in academese, which does not carry the voices of the people. "Dr. Tinker is Ute, and on the faculty for many years at Iliff School of Theology / University of Denver. Also suggest one read in depth and at length the works of native american authors on the Jesuit incursions and invasions, their abject cruelty to the tribes whether in Canada and the now USA, the Americas they landed in. There can be no glossing over of their crimes against human beings, no matter their motives. The Jesuits of today are not the Jesuits of the past. Jesuitical beliefs have evolved, thankfully, esp regarding others' cultures different than their own. Kateri's story coils outward from one side only, there is no written testament from her kin or kith from her time. There is only the jesuit who said he 'converted' a young native girl [ who was not an outcast, no tribal group exiles their own who are vulnerable.] We have no testament from Tekawitha on why she starved herself to death, which is amongst many in native tribes, part and parcel of grief from having lost so much. In a time of 'flagellation' and 'self bodily mortification' as taught by various orders of rcc, it appears no jesuit had common sense about a young girl starving herself to death, but instead, over time, laid a gloss over it, misconstruing physical harms to a young and still growing human being, as being some Jesuit warped sense of 'religiosity' in the girl.It is true there are a few thousand people who are native american, both enrolled and not enrolled who are as Dr. Tinker says, 'nominally christian-- .' Some are catholics in a sense, and others protestant, but EACH in their own ways. There is no monolithic structure for a native american who happens to have taken up with 'christianity' being a certain kind of 'christian.' But one can be sure that no self respecting native american would leave their clans or tribal rituals or downgrade their relatives, for any church or stranger or 'religious order' that harmed them deeply. Unless, they were brain injured. Or lured with alcohol. Or mentally not well and unable to track. Even then, unlikely.What happened with Kateri could not happen today. The tribal men and women would not stand for it. Internet would draw protections for her from rez police as well as state law officers -- at the least about taking an underage child elsewhere via a man who claims he's saving her soul. There are many questions about that time re what condition she was really in, and what the Jesuit really did.Am well aware of some who are not native american having romantic attachments of deep sentiment about wanting/hoping a native american 'saint' ...but that longing/desire in some to have a native american who somehow forsaked her own people, who somehow 'saw the christian light' and left of her own will her deep and ancient religion, left her clan and blood relatives, and instead gave harms to herself-- should never overshadow the hard facts of a grown man trying to persuade a native girl, taking her from her people, not intervening for her health's sake in her downward spiral, proposing that harming the body is somehow holy.

I read sections of this book over a year ago. It was fabulous! Christopher Vescey approaches a very large subject matter in a detailed, comprehensive manner that is easy to read for readers at many different levels. It may seem like an overly ambitious effort to catalog such a vast history of experience, starting in the 1600s and continuing through today, of Native American and Catholic history, but I felt like I could read one section out of order from the rest of the book, and understand the context, history, and place within the larger scale.I thoroughly enjoyed this very interdisciplinary and honest look at Kateri's kin and legacy. I find the pursuits of various Kateri Tekakwitha networks across the country to be inspiring, well-intentioned and deserving of recognition from the greater Catholic and Native communities. The blending of longhouse and Catholic traditions serve the purposes of their communities. I think that Kateri Tekakwitha followers do a lot to promote their ancestors' legacies and not just those brought to this country by Jesuits.I strongly recommend this book. It is a valuable asset to anyone's bookshelf that is interested in Native and religious issues. I would love to see more books by Christopher Vecsey. I think he is a great social commentator on our time and our people's histories.

And Vecsey knows his subject inside and out. He caps brief histories of the major tribes and missions with honest and candid quotes from Indian Catholics today. And he never resorts to easy stereotypes but instead shows Indian responses to Catholicism in all their real complexity--from unswervingly devout to downright hostile.You can tell Vecsey spent a lot of time putting this book together. His source material runs the gamut from published histories to diocesan archives to personal interviews.Tribes covered include the Montagnais, Hurons, Iroquois, Micmac, Abenaki, Houma, Choctaw, Ojibway, Potawatomi, and Salish, among others.

I've had Page-A-Day Gallery Calendars for the past 6 years and I LOVE THEM. I usually get the Island one - but they didn't publish it this year... So I have this one. It's simply gorgeous. The pictures are so big, so bright and just beautiful. I tend to cheat and go through the pictures in advance (I'm bad, I know) - but not this year. Every day is a surprise. I always go through my calendars at the end of the year to pick out the best pictures to use for scrapbooking or whatever - these calendars are simply the best.

Excellent pictures and rather large, perfect for a desk or table setting. The pictures are all super professional. There is an excellent mixture of tropical and domestic birds to meet anyone's interest. I know about over half of the birds pictured so there is something to learn each day of the week but the weekends are doubled up. My only issue is the pictures are so good one hates to toss the calendar at the end of the year. Need to find someone who would like to use it as reference material.

Pictures are ok. Disappointed with variety and clarity of images. Too many swans, owls, and flocks of birds. I wanted pictures of birds identified so I can draw/paint them.

I LOVE this calendar! Got one as a gift a few years ago and now I have to order one for myself every year. I keep one at my desk at work and it's a great conversation starter, even people who aren't interested in birds like to look at it and comment on the bird of the day. Very nice quality paper, photos and the holder too. Love love love this calendar!

It would be nice to have some thought out into the birds they choose for holidays, Mondays, weekends, etc. I have also had the dog calendar by the same company and they are always perfectly chosen for the holiday. The birds are seemingly randomly selected. It would also be nice to know where each bird picture is taken, not just the name of the kind of bird it is. I have bought this calendar for the past 4 or 5 years for my friend and she loves it, except for the above mentioned recommended improvements.

I expected the photos to be more like the photos on the big Audubon monthly calendars, so I was a bit shocked to discover many days show photos that are blah or rather ugly. The way the calendar works is nice though, and the date is legible from at least 8 feet away.

A friend got me the 2016 version of this for Christmas last year. I had to get one for myself this year because I'm hooked! I can't speak to whether there are repeat pictures. I haven't looked through them all - that would ruin the fun for me. I wouldn't remember them anyway if their were. I just love having a new bird on my desk every day.

The reason for 4 stars is we wish it would tell where these birds live. We love the pictures of them - they are so beautiful.

My children are learning from this, since my son started the scales in piano with this book he is much better in violin, reading the scales and knowing his flats, sharps and scales. Very happy. As you can see the scales take 2 pages and at the end you have the last 2 photos I took

This is a book every piano student should own for their entire lifetime. Each key is complete on two pages with scales and arpeggios using different motions, chords with inversions. Wish the 'Circle of Fifths' in front cover was illustrated as a circle.

This Canadian woman fell in love with the north and its people. She took her kayak on a long perilous trip where many would fear to go. What courage. She tells about her trip and the many places she visited and the people she met. She continued her trip alone after the man along on the trip proved hard to get along with. But she continued. She was planning more trips to her favorite part of the world but it was not to be. Though she did not live to continue kayaking she did what she wanted. She enjoyed life to the fullest and was not afraid to go where others would be afraid. What a terrific lady. Her health was not good but that would not deter her from living life.

Excellent book and surpasses her early traveling companion's book.

She was an incredible women. This journey she has shared about her life is a inspiration to all women searching for their inner strengths.

Our entire family shared this book and we still gifted it to a friend down south. Good story and highly recommend it as gifts.

Interesting book, I was up north flying when she did her summers and came through the place I was staying at but missed her. An extraordinary women to be doing a solo trip like that in the conditions she had. She was incredibly tough minded. It was so sad she passed away so young with so much left to do

A must read for lady kayakers!

"Kabloona" is a well-written and interesting story about an interesting lady who did an interesting paddle with some questionable partners. This I've read twice while her partner's I did not finish once. Her paddles in this area took root and she returned after to spend time in native villages that are as 3rd world as anywhere in the world. I reread it just before paddling in the Pelly Bay area and one in our group spotted the very small marker on the Ihoktok beach. Just a small plaque in a pretty spot along the shore with the tundra stretching up and away in the distance. No mention of her in Kugaaruk itself, but her presence would have had to have improved the community. I'd like to read her second book but have not found it available anywhere.
