I have been a quilter for over 20 years and this book helped me see color and fabrics in a whole new way. There is a great deal of detailed information about choosing fabrics and creating subtle color combinations. The projects in the book are stunning and relate directly to the color theory she is teaching. At the same time there is an expectation of a certain level of sewing skills. I would not recommend it to a beginner as I think they would have a difficult time constructing the projects.

This is Yoko Saito's best book. While it was not the first one I purchased, it helped me fully understand how to work with Japanese taupe fabrics, which are just luscious! I now own most or all of her books and after buying this one I was able to better understand and appreciate why projects in her subsequent books have such striking appeal.

If you already have some experience sewing this book will take you to the next level. I am in love with the Japanese esthetic and Yoko Saito's, Taupe Color Theory is a wonderful book for those like me who needed a refresher to inspire some ideas for small quilts or would be great for someone newly interested in Japanese Taupe quilting. The variety of quilt pattern styles as well as the gorgeous projects have really inspired me. I am partway through a lovely bag already. I look forward to creating many more projects inspired by this book.

Love these inspiring suggestions for using taupe colors in quilting and useful projects. This is another book my quilting friends have purchased after looking through it. A movement has been inspired by Yoko Saito's artful use of beautiful color and textures in our area. As Yoko herself was inspired by designs of quilts when she saw the American craft of quilting. Preferring handwork techniques to machine stitching, she has returned our attention to quality crafting with simple needle and thread.sw

The skill and artistry of this author's applique is just stunning! Her subtle use of color is refined, elegant and beautiful. I am in awe of her talent, but she provides such detailed instructions and helpful step-by-step photos, that I am tempted to try my hand. Even if I never make anything from this book, however, it was worth the money for the pleasure of seeing such beautiful work!

I bought this so I could follow along with others who wanted to work through the book on the blog "The Caffeinated Quilter." Keep in mind that the "Notes from the Publisher" in the beginning of the book clearly state that the techniques "might suggest that intermediate or advanced quilters will be more comfortable working on these projects." This is definitely true! This isn't a book for those just beginning to quilt. The author has assumed that the reader who buys this book already has basic skills required for piecing, drafting patterns, quilting, and following directions, and will have needle, thread, and other tools needed to pursue the projects (as an advanced quilter, I appreciated this, as so often most quilt books include introductory pages that I find repetitive). While many people balk at the cost of the book, if you're an experienced quilter, I can assure you that you'll get your money's worth. I have quite a few books in my craft library, but none have given me such challenge, joy, and satisfaction as this one. Many quilt books I buy have one or two projects that I'd like to do, but this one has a storehouse of information and projects. This is the layout of the book: Chapter 1 is "20 Taupe Color Collections: Lessons in pulling together taupe color collections and showcasing them using quilt blocks" and "The 5 Senses and Japanese Taupe Color Theory"; Chapter 2 is "14 Projects: Putting Taupe Color Theory into Practice"; Chapter 3 is "18 Taupe Color Projects to Make: 18 fun color collections reminiscent of favorite things." I have worked through twelve of the twenty color collections thus far, and I can't believe how much I've learned about the taupe color wheel and taupe color theory. I'm also in the midst of finishing one of the bags in the second section of the book. Another thing I like about this book is that most of the initial part of the projects entail hand-sewing and quilting, so it is easy to keep your current project in a basket to pick up when you have time (for those of us who work, this is a huge plus). You can work through each color theory "lesson" at your own pace and then choose other projects from the second part of the book when you want to do something new. This is also a beautiful book to look through (I wish it had the "Look Inside" feature so potential buyers could see some of the pages). I am so glad that Yoko Saito's books are being translated into English, and I hope that eventually all of her books will be translated. There is this lovely aesthetic in Japanese quilters' books that I really appreciate, reflected in diagrams or assumptions that the reader will intuitively know how to construct a purse, for example (though sometimes I wish they would share a few more steps!). Having said that, the challenge to figure things out might be part of the learning process too. I highly recommend this book to advanced quilters. It is a veritable treasure house of information and projects that will keep you busy for years, not just days.

A good review of Japanese taupes and how to combine them into beautiful projects. This isn't just a pattern book. It is more about taupes -- what they are, how to combine colors -- with a few patterns. I would call it more "educational" that her other books, but it wa just what I was looking for as a research tool before making a queen size taupe quilt.

I have at least 15 different Gita. This one is my favorite. The text is clear and easy to understand, even for me who's french is my first language. The hardback, deluxe edition is a beautiful book, solid and a book you will keep and read all your life.

It's about time that we get a new translation of the Bhagavad Gita. The most popular version nowadays seems to be Swami Prabhupada's version, but unfortunately, he seems to think he is god. Prasad takes a much more low-key approach, simply translating the Gita to the best of his ability and allowing the reader to make sense of it rather than forcing his own opinions on others. Any time there is the possibility of confusion, Prasad defines his terms and goes to the extra effort to make sure that what Vyasa was trying to describe is clear to even ones not familiar with Indian philosophy. More accurate than most other translations and rendered into modern prose, this makes an excellent place to start with if you're new to Eastern thought. Few terms are left in Sanskrit other than those that are necessary (Dharma, Karma, etc.). A wonderful addition to any seeker's library.

Excellent translation, it's easy to read and understand. Plus it isn't bogged down with ISKCON theology like the Prahupada translation and commentary.This a great translation to start memorizing from because the English flows smoothly and isn't loaded with untranslated Sanskrit terms.

Manning seems unable to differentiate between compassionate end-of-life assisted suicide and voluntary euthanasia and the murderous genocidal regime perpetrated by the Nazis during World War 2. Almost every chapter includes a reference to the Third Reich and an attempt to dishonestly conflate murder with compassion and choice. He vilifies the concept of informed consent by trying to redefine it. According to Manning, the "consent" obtained by the Nazis by torturing and starving their prisoners is on the same level as a free, uncoerced choice by an adult at the end of life. Such utter nonsense does not belong in rational discourse..Manning begins his book with the Catholic teaching on euthanasia. According to the catechism, euthanasia includes any action or omission whose primary intent is to end life for compassionate reasons. This obviously includes withdrawing ventilators, ceasing dialysis or artificial nutrition and hydration. Yet Manning and the RCC contradict themselves when they accept that not all life-saving measures must be taken. The only way they can evade this obvious contradiction is to concoct a non-existent difference between "ending a patient's life and letting nature take its course." To put it another way, assisted suicide is perfectly fine and dandy, but ONLY if you need a respirator or dialysis to live. Everyone else must suffer until a "natural" death. Did you break your neck but can breathe unaided? Too bad! You can't die unless you are in a country that allows you to refuse food and fluids. So much for compassionate conservatism. Yes, this is vitalism, but it is also the only reasonable conclusion of their position.The slippery slope is brought up again, as is often the case in these debates. What he does NOT mention (as an honest investigator would) is the obvious presence of involuntary euthanasia in countries that nominally prohibit it, such as Australia. Blanket prohibitions don't work. Alcohol prohibition and drug prohibition prove this beyond any doubt. The only country that has had success preventing cocaine and heroin entering their borders is Singapore, and that's only because it is an island nation.According to Manning's woefully deficient research, science was primarily responsible for the Holocaust. Despite the complicity of doctors and scientists in the actual execution of the Final Solution, the motivations behind the Nazi genocide, to say nothing of the attitudes of Polish, German and Austrian anti-Semites, was undeniably Christian at its core. Martin Luther's acerbic rant against the Jews, "On the Jews and their Lies," circulated for centuries before Hitler came to power, fomenting hatred against Jews and the establishment of ghettos in several countries. The bible itself condemns the Jews for the "deicide" of Jesus, even condemning future generations.John 5:16 - And therefore did the Jews persecute Jesus, and sought to slay him, because he had done these things on the sabbath day.Matthew When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it.Matthew 27:24-25 - "When Pilate saw that he could prevail nothing, but that rather a tumult was made, he took water, and washed his hands before the multitude, saying, I am innocent of the blood of this just person: see ye to it. Then answered all the people, and said, His blood be on us, and on our children."The following policies of the Nazis were taken almost verbatim from Luther's masterwork of hatred and intolerance:1. To avoid Jewish synagogues and schools and warn people against them;2. To refuse to let Jews own houses among Christians;3. For Jewish religious writings to be taken away;4. For rabbis to be forbidden to preach;5. To not offer protection for Jews on highways;6. For usury to be prohibited, and for all silver and gold to be removed, put aside for safekeeping and given back to Jews who truly convert; and7. To give young, strong Jews flail, axe, spade, spindle, and let them earn their bread in the sweat of their noses.The Third Reich came to power not because of moral relativism, but from unquestioning, blind obedience to authority.The law must change to allow greater choice and protection for the vulnerable. Surely these are worthy goals we can all agree are worth fighting for.

I read this book in researching a paper on euthanasia; the author seemed, as a Christian clergyman and former gastroenterologist, to have a unique perspective.Surprisingly, given this background, Father Manning gives a date in the "BCE" and"CE" (as opposed to BC and AD) terminology,favored by those who have a negative attitude towards Christianity. More disturbing than this is the author's support for passive euthanasia - the withholding of nutrition and fluids from patients, especially those with decreased levels of consciousness (he mentions he does not like the designation of passive euthanasia - euphemisms are preferred today).Mentioned parenthetically,on page 20, is the determination that the denial of adequate medical care to noviates is ethical. Forty years ago my wife was a noviate nun (SND) in Chardon, Ohio; she had a pulmonary exposure at the time - not adequately treated - which has resulted in progressive and inoperable bronchiectasis, a potentially fatal lung condition. I am not sure how canon law would analyze this. Maybe we could try Luke 14 or Matthew 25:41-45.

The author of this book launched a second career as a priest. He now serves as pastor of St. Gregory the Great Parish in Hamilton Township, NJ. Manning comments :"There's a sense of fatalism that can seize people of good will. That's why it's so important that we talk about it." Manning brings a unique and knowledgeable perspective to this crucial issue. As a physician he speaks from experience. As a priest/ethicist he brings moral/spiritual depth to the discussion. The whole issue of euthanasia brings to mind the easy accommodation that Nazi doctors reached regarding their horrendous experimentation on the "expendable" Jews and other victims in the Holocaust. What looks like a humane issue at first glance, yields disturbing portents upon further examination. Read Manning's book !

Recently, I was asked to do some analysis on longitudinal patient data using fixed effects regression. This book provided an excellent, step-by-step approach on how to tackle the problem.The first two chapters cover an overview of fixed effects and random effects modeling in the context of ordinary least squares. Then, Prof. Allison devotes a chapter to each of several topics: modeling binary outcomes, modeling counting outcomes, and modeling time to event (I admit that I stopped at Chapter 5).I am particularly impressed by the way he shows different approaches to solving problems. And, that he compares the performance of different routines. It turns out that for many of my problems, proc genmod with GEE approximation is a good solution -- and one that finished in a few minutes rather than a few hours.

Author provides nice explanation of PROC CALIS for linear fixed effects, random effects and reciprocal effects with lagged predictors. That said, why not in the same volume provide additional discussion clarifying distinction between PROC GLM use of least squares for linear trends and use of PROC CALIS for linear and nonlinear trends and tests for significance in PROC CALIS.

My 2 year old LOVES this entire series of Nat. Geo Readers... I have purchased about 25 different titles, "pre-readers" as well as Level 1 & 2 readers. She loves them all & will ask for certain ones. The "pre-readers" level books are extremely simple & great because she memorizes the words & can "read" it herself. We love the more advanced ones too, because there is more information to talk about. I have learned quite a few facts, myself!) What a great series. The price is reasonable & pictures are great. These are really getting her interested in nature, animals & science... I will continue to buy these as they are released, for our collection!

My preschooler LOVES interesting weather. This book is a little misleading though -- the tornado on the cover isn't really the kind of weather this book is about. Inside is filled with pictures of kids playing in the pool in the sun, or in the rain, etc. I thought this was going to be a kid-friendly version of pics and descriptions of tornadoes, hurricanes, that kind of thing. He's pretty bored with this one after just a couple read throughs.

he loves the pictures, but it is a QUICK read. not a lot of info in this little book. for the price its alright. for any kid really into weather this book wont hold their attention. still a very cute book for the price.

I bought this Weather children's book for my 81 year old mother. She loves looking at and learning about weather so I thought she would enjoy this. She did. It's a well written book and gives a lot of information about all kinds of weather.

I purchased this book for my 19-yr old daughter.She was diagnosed with A.D.D. at age 8 and has been on medication ever since. Despite graduating with honors and being a bright kid, she was overwhelmed and unprepared for the year she spent at a 4-yr college last year, 3 hours away. We had no idea how isolated she was until near the end of the year. She has been in counseling and trying to figure out next steps since May and I happened upon this book about a month ago. I so wish we had found it 2 years ago! She is planning to take a couple classes at our community college in January, so, better late than never.It is easy to read and has some very practical step-by-step suggestions. It discusses the differences between high school and college and lets the student know what to expect, in very practical terms (for example, no one will be there to make sure you take your meds, so you need to find a way to make sure that you do). It has a fairly thorough checklist to help the student understand where her strengths and weaknesses are, create an action plan to work on improving them with specific strategies, track progress, and evaluate and modify that plan as needed. I can tell that she will be revisiting several sections from time to time.The book also mentions a companion book designed for parents (Ready for Take Off: Preparing Your Teen with ADHD or LD for College), which I also plan to buy and read.The only reason I didn't give it a rating of 5 is because I have not read any other books yet on ADD adjustment after high school, so I have little to compare it to so far. I have two other books on my list about managing ADD as an adult, but knew this book should be the first one we both read.We both had numerous "aha" moments while reading this book and I suspect other students and parents will as well. In my opinion, it's a must read for any ADD, ADHD, or LD student who plans to attend college.

This book is an invaluable asset for teens considering--and applying to college.Specifically targeted to teens with ADHD and/or LD, the text also easily applies to other disabilities. This is because the college student with disabilities must be on 'their own' in the post-secondary environment.Independence is a radical departure for all entering freshman. But especially for former special education students, whose curriculum (and lives) were previously very closely regulated by a close combination of school/parental oversight. It terminated the moment they obtained a high school diploma.Having to independently discover and seek out disability accommodations can get daunting for a new college student, also having to think about their way around a campus, and the larger college community. But it can be done once students understand what rules now cover them and how to utilize the policies.Because increasing numbers of special education programs across the country are now implementing transition programs for students who are capable of completing post-secondary education, this book is directly written towards the prospective college students themselves. It explains how college differs from high school and how to successfully accommodate disabilities at college in clear, easy to follow along text.It's definitely something which they will need to pack as they head off to the infamous freshman dorm.
