About the Author

Jack C. Ramsay, Jr., though born in Virginia was raised in Laredo, Texas, the border town in which his grandfather settled soon after the Civil War. For several years, he lived in Louisiana, where he first heard tales of the bayou country and legends of Gulf Coast pirates. In later years, he returned to the area and applied the techniques of a trained historian to the mystery of Jean Laffite. A graduate of the University of Edinburgh in Scotland, where he received a Ph.D. for his work in historical research, Ramsay also studied at the University of Texas at Austin, Davidson College (North Carolina) and Union Seminary in Virginia. He and his wife now live in Denton, Texas, where he is concentrating on writing, traveling in the pursuit of historical research and speaking. They are the parents of a son and a daughter and have four grandchildren.

I always thought that Stanley Clisby's book "Jean Lafitte: Gentleman rover was the definitive book on Lafitte until I read Jack Ramsay Jr's book Jean Lafitte: Prince of Pirates. Ramsay's book is chock full of interesting facts that was wonderfully researched. I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It gives you a greater appreciation for who the mysterious privateer Jean Lafitte really was. I recommend this book highly.

This book really gave a feel for what times where like in those wild days when Louisiana was not yet a state. What an interesting character Laffite was. This book really did a great job of giving the reader a glimpse of what it was like in those days and also what a paradox Mr Laffite himself truly was.

Barbara Kingsolver was a young reporter in Arizona when she was assigned to write a story about this strike. Little did she know then that the strike would last for eighteen months, and that this book would be a natural outgrowth of her interest. The book is filled with facts and figures as well as the stories of people who bravely "held the line" each day, picketing against the "scab" workers that were brought in by the Phelps Dodge Copper Corporation. It's also the story of a town, where the only work was in the mine. And it's also about the generations of Mexican American citizens of that town who had to fight prejudice as well as the everyday dangers inherent in mining.Most of all though, it is the story of the women and how this strike broadened their understanding of the world beyond their families, and let them develop new strengths. For it was mostly the women who stood on that picket line - the wives, sisters and mothers of the men who would have been arrested. Families were threatened with eviction. There was even a catastrophic flood during this time, which brought its own kind of devastation. And some of the women were arrested too. But despite intimidation, tear gas and harassment, the community stood firm.I was particularly interested in the stories of the handful of women who actually worked in the mine. One of them had 11 children but needed the work to be able to help her husband support the family. Eight dollars an hour doesn't seem like much, but it was considered a good wage compared with $3.00 an hour for being a secretary. Several of them described the actual work, including the heavy lifting all day long and sometimes working as many as 28 days in a row. Their male co-workers verbally harassed them. And there was no special restroom for women. Eventually though, they won respect.But when the corporation wanted to cut wages and eliminate even a cost-of-living increase, the strike started. It went on and on. Ms. Kingsolver goes into all the details. It was fascinating. It was if I was just picked up from my New York City apartment and plunked down on the picket line of a little town that had less people than one apartment building on my block.The eventual result wasn't very good for anybody though. Not in the usual sense. But by the time the author gives her own spin on the situation, including her feminist politics, I was left with a positive feeling, as was her intention. I learned things from this book. I learned about a copper mine in Arizona, the actual jobs and the people who worked there. I learned about the large and imperfect system of unions in this country. And, most of all, I learned about the strength and courage of a few special women.

Holding the Line: Women in the Great Arizona Mine Strike of 1983 by Barbara Kingsolver is too important a piece of American labor history to be reproduced with glaring typographical errors on almost every page. It looks as if the print version was digitalized by a scanner with the hiccups and sometimes it is hard to tell just how a sentence should read. Kingsolver is a first-rate writer and the story she tells is compelling. Especially at a time when labor unions are losing their membership and their voice to protect the health and safety and the livelihood of U.S. workers, this story deserves a better treatment.

The facts were illuminating and the history was very interesting. For that information, I think people should read this book. I thought the union battles had been fought in the late 1800's and early 1900's. This took place in 1983. However, I found it to be repetitive and there were too many people involved to keep their experiences clear.

First of all the Kindle version is ridiculously poorly edited. I've never seen such a poor product put to market honestly.The account in the story had some redeeming elements in it, especially the aspects of how tough the women in the story were. However it was very union-biased and didn't quit tell a true account of both sides. Had it been more balanced I might have given it 3 stars.

If you like Kingsolver you'll like this, even though it's non-fiction. It's a great story, very well told. If you're unfamiliar with her works, you might want to start with her non-fiction (Animal Dreams, Bean Trees, Pigs in Heaven, etc.). Not because this isn't as good but to enjoy her wonderful and unique voice as a writer.

Good book, sometimes a hard read as sometimes non fiction can be, there are many characters, but a good story line and well presented.

This book would be great for someone researching this issue to get a fresh perspective, but it far from entertaining. Please don't let this review detract from her novels, which I have thoroughly enjoyed.

This book changed my perspective and (I expect) the course of my life.Barbara Kingsolver is always real, intimate, personal. But this engaged me as a worker, aligned with other mothers and householders and members of a township (an entity we build together), as never before.Read this book. She speaks for me.

Who Was Fidel Castro?     “Fidel! Fidel! Fidel!” Hundreds of thousands of people gathered in the city of Havana, the capital of Cuba, were shouting for Fidel Castro. It was the evening of January 8, 1959. A week earlier, Fidel and his forces had overthrown President Batista and the government of Cuba. The crowds in Havana were waiting for their new leader to speak about his plans for the country. Cubans were ready for the freedom and changes that Fidel had promised them. The Cuban people were ready for a new leader.   Spotlights shone on the stage where Fidel was to speak. Fidel finally stepped up to the microphone. He had a big, bushy beard and was dressed in an army cap and olive-green army fatigues. The crowds cheered even louder when they saw Fidel.   Fidel spoke for two hours. He told everyone listening in Havana, across Cuba, and around the world that he was the new leader of the country. He would bring change to his beloved homeland.   As Fidel ended his speech, several white doves were released. One of the doves landed on Fidel’s shoulder. The crowd went silent. White doves were seen as a sign of peace. Many believed it was a sign from God. They believed that Fidel, who was only thirty-two years old at the time, had been specially chosen to lead Cuba.   Chapter 1: A Privileged Childhood     Fidel Castro was born on August 13, 1926. His father was named Angel. He was the owner of a sugar cane plantation. (A plantation is a very large farm that usually grows only one crop.) He had immigrated to Cuba from Spain in 1905. Fidel’s mother, Lina, was a housekeeper at the plantation. Fidel was Angel and Lina’s third child. After Fidel was born, the couple had four more children. Angel and Lina did not get married until Fidel was a teenager.    The sugar cane plantation where Fidel grew up was called Las Manacas. It was near the town of Biran. Biran is at the eastern end of Cuba. At the time, this area was among the poorest in Cuba. Most people lived in simple shacks without running water or electricity. They worked on small farms and plantations for hardly any money.    Fidel’s father had started out like this. But he was determined to make a better life for himself. Angel taught himself to read and write. He worked hard and saved money so that he could buy his own property. Angel was proud to be able to give his own family the things he did not have as a child.   The plantation grew to over twenty-five thousand acres. Three hundred families lived and worked on the property. Although Fidel was the owner’s son, he played with the children of the laborers who worked on the plantation. And workers often ate meals with Fidel and his family.    Fidel saw that his life was very different from the lives of the workers. The Castro children never worried about having enough to eat. They dressed in fine clothes and went to private schools. They rode horses, swam in the river, hunted, fished, and climbed in the nearby mountains.   Fidel spent a lot of time with his older brother Ramon and his younger brother Raul. The brothers were very close, especially Fidel and Raul. Raul looked up to Fidel, and Fidel always looked out for his younger brother.    From a very young age, Fidel had a stubborn streak and a strong temper. Although a bright boy, he had a hard time sitting still at school. Fidel argued with his teachers and fought with other students. He was always determined to get his own way.   When Fidel was about seven years old, his parents sent him to La Salle, a private Catholic boarding school. Ramon and Raul were also sent there. Their parents hoped that the boarding school would help their sons, especially Fidel, behave and be better students. But that did not happen. Fidel and his brothers did very little work and did not get good grades.   At the end of Fidel’s fourth-grade year, Angel brought his sons home. He refused to send them back to school. Although Fidel didn’t like school, he didn’t want to be stuck at home. In fact, he threatened to burn down the family house! So Fidel’s father gave in. But he decided to send Fidel to an even stricter school.   In 1940, Fidel moved to Dolores Academy. Raul joined his older brothers at the school when he was old enough to attend. The school’s many rules had a good effect on Fidel. He studied more and his grades improved. Fidel also discovered he was good at sports. He made it onto the boxing, soccer, and baseball teams.    When he was sixteen, Fidel convinced his parents to let him go to the Jesuit preparatory school of Belen in Havana. It was the most exclusive high school in the country. In time, Raul joined his older brother there.   Fidel came from a rich family. Still, other boys saw Fidel as an outsider. Most of the students came from Havana. They were rich city boys and made fun of Fidel for being from the countryside. They called him a peasant behind his back.    Fidel decided that rather than fighting, he would turn his energy to his studies. Soon his hard work impressed his teachers—and the other students, too. Fidel graduated in the top ten of his class. His yearbook read “Fidel always distinguished himself in all subjects. . . . He was . . . a true athlete, always defending the banner of the school with pride and valor. He has won the admiration and affection of all . . . We do not doubt that Fidel has what it takes and will make something of his life.”

I take it none of the commenters have read this book. It doesn’t paint a rosy picture of Fidel or Cuba. I talks about his goals and his failures. It also refers to him as a ruthless dictator who at the beginning had some good intentions, but ultimately power corrupted him. And the end it asks: was Fidel a hero or a villain?

My daughter is very excited to read all of the “who was” books... didn’t think much of it when it was Andrew Jackson and Albert Einstein. Then, she brought home who was Fidel Castro... the game changed a bit. I must say that it does paint Castro in a more favorable light than most Americans would agree with. It does also make it clear that he did not improve Cuba’s economic state, schools or government. In the end it asked you to make up your own mind... In conclusion, I will allow my 8 year old to read this book but we will be discussing it & I’ll be sharing with her some key details the book excludes.

An excellent biography for elementary school readers. It provides an even-handed discussion of the benefits Castro and the Revolution brought to Cuba, but just as readily notes the failures. Highly Recommended.

Castro murdered thousands and oppressed an island full of people. He was a vile dictator. On November 25th 2016 Fidel Castro finally became a good communist. This book is awful as it attempts to indoctrinate children into believing that communism is cool and novel.

Seriously? Fidel Castro? I read the book and found it to be filled with inaccuracies and propaganda. What’s next? Who was Pol Pot? Who was Stalin?

Too many spelling errors in such a short book. Some good info, I will look into Oyster/Google/Sribd for other sources for ebooks.There were some things incorrect in the book. Amazon Prime doesn’t include Kindle Unlimited. It is a SEPARATE service. I am doing the 30 day free trial now. Prime gives you one free book a mont from Kindle picks.I buy a lot of urban novels/trashy books. 99c or free for the first, 1.99-2.99 for part 2, and 3.99 and up for the finale or subsequent sequels. So far, many have been on Kindle Unlimited. I might continue the service after my trial.
