Jonathan Alpeyrie was born in Paris but moved to the United States when he was fourteen-years-old. His photography career stretches over a decade, and has brought him to more than twenty-five countries, covering fourteen conflict zones, from the Middle East and North Africa to the South Caucasus and Central Asia. His work has been featured widely, from the New York Times to Time to the BBC. Yes, this is one of those books which people need to read more of to find out what can happens to Westerners in such a hot spot place--Syria. And this happened in 2013. It's now 2018 and is a completely war-torn, dangerous country for anyone there.I can't imagine what this war photographer went through--trying to do a job, and as soon as he turns around he is kidnapped. Thus remains the un-clarity of whom his captives are. What do they want for/from him? Apparently the captors were Syrian Rebels (whom he did want to meet and connect with via their side of the war to begin with, though that not happening with this group). To sell him to another group? Mr. Alpeyrie went through these questions, knowing that special forces (he has duel citizenship with France and U.S.A) were not going to break down his door any time soon. But, the story moves along and he finds whom he can bet on and whom he can't for his captors. He has time to characterize them, as well as to study his surroundings, once allowed outdoor privileges, if ever the chance of escape.Of course he was freed or else he could not have told his story. But that was quite an unusual way.I think you will be surprised as to how his life continues on as a war photographer (I was).I recommend this book to you for learning more about kidnappings on foreign soil. I hope a lot of journalists know about this story before trusting the wrong people while covering war-torn countries such as in Syria. But again, thank God there are those HEROS, who do report for us!This is the way in which we learn 'the intricate details' about another nation that is so foreign and a foe to ours, that is very rarely covered in news stories.Books like these give me a handle on how my government handles hostel nation crisis's i.e. humanitarian issues, what they bomb, boots on uncharted ground, refugee issues, and what happens between our countries. It's one of the issues I think of when preparing to vote for those in Washington. Great book to learn from.

Alpeyrie does a phenomenal job of providing details on the mental and physical anguish he went through. Alpeyrie allows himself to be vulnerable in his writing and provides intimate details of what one goes through in such a traumatic event. Even more impressive, after researching more about him, is that he clearly did not let this take over his life. He has continued to travel and continue his career as a war photographer. Highly recommend.

It is a very personnal story of 81 days of captivity in Syria by a world renowned photographer who has covered over the years many war zones: Nepal, Armenia, Afghanistan, Iraq, Syria.It is a story of survival while keeping your dignity as a person and building a relationship with your tormentors that eventually brings understanding and a degree of respect.

This was a gift. My sister enjoyed the book.

There is so much to say about the this real life harrowing struggle I am not sure where to even began.Jonathan Alpeyrie job is what most photography dream of but very few have the courage to do.Jonahtan Alpeyrie story is or about bring a captive guest than prisoner. He wasn't beaten, or torture but the stress of not knowing what was going to happen had to been torture enough. He is very open about the fact it could have been much worse and he understands he was lucky even blessed that it wasn't.He was able to take a unknown very frightening time in his life and bring humor into by giving his captor's names. He writes about meaningful relationship he developed with some of his captors and still keeps in contact with them.As readers read this book you wish to have had pictures to be able to better understand the events during his time in Syria. Many times I found it difficult to understand what Jonathan was describing.Jonathan has many strong feelings about the political events in the middle east that might not appeal to all readers but he has some very strong points I feel everyone needs to look at and question.In the end what I found this story having me looking for answers to my question. What is the true meaning of freedom.Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher Atria Books for the advance copy

A rarity, this book is a three-act stage drama written by a Roman Catholic pope. Pope John Paul II, 1920-2005, was active in the theater as a young man in Poland until the Nazi occupation closed his university when he was 19. As a member of the Rhapsodic Theater, John Paul II (real name Karol Wotylja) helped put on secret readings and productions as a form of cultural resistance during the Nazi occupation, before deciding to join an underground seminary during the war. Later as a bishop and cardinal, he wrote theatrical criticism pieces under a pseudonym. This play represents his only published play and is a fascinating piece of meditative drama. The first act follows a couple in love about to be married, the second act follows a married couple whose love has grown cold, and the third act concerns the two children of the first two couples who are in love and hoping to be married. A mysterious jeweler unites the three couples, dispensing wisdom about fate in addition to wedding bands. This play was made into a 1988 film with Burt Lancaster, Ben Cross, and Olivia Hussey. Like the late pope's "Theology of the Body," this play extols the virtues of married love as a reflection of God's eternal love, offering an optimistic view of human relations where "the future depends on love." Each scene is a series of minimally staged, almost monologue-driven scenes between the couples done in underground theatrical style with a literary debt to medieval mystery dramas. It's a pretty good play and a pretty good read, offering a lot of food for thought in what is essentially (to quote the title) a "meditation on the sacrament of matrimony."

Superb and then some. The movie that grew out of this play should be required viewing for all couples planning on marriage. St. Pope John Paul II demonstrates here his fundamental understanding of the human person, of love, and of sex. Both the book and the movie bear repeated reading or watching. The bonus in the movie is a 75 year-old Burt Lancaster portraying the Jeweler.

Great love story written by our newly made saint, St. Pope John Paul II. This Pope was a man who understood humanity and love which is necessary for all relationships and what Jesus meant when he said, "love one another." Great film.

This book is among the few plays written by the Pope which have made it into print. It deals with relationships between couples, one falling in love, one falling out of love, and various other situations. It's beautifully written. I'm not sure how much was lost in translation, but except for a few hiccups, the writing is beautifully poetic and evocative. The Pope's insights into relationships are quite profound, and very simply illustrated. It's a short and enjoyable read.

The Jeweler's Shop is so beautiful, it contains three stories on marriage. This is a great gift for a seasoned or a young couple.

This book made me cry. Beautifully written and the imagery is pure.

THIS IS A VERY SWEET STORY. I WOULD SUGGEST ANYONE INTERESTED IN MARRIAGE SHOULD GIVE THIS A READ. IT DID NOT TAKE LONG BUT WILL STAY WITH YOU FOREVER.

Not too shabby. Simple plot with the grumpy alpha going through the stages of a thawing heart, which I always find amusing. Likeable heroine, opposites attract chemistry. Would have liked a little more background, even just a better summary, on them to better understand their personalities. Few typos, but not so much that it took away from the story. A sexy, fun, quick read. Would definitely read this author again.

This was such a sweet story and perfect for the season! I wasn't sure about Eb at first because he was giving Scrooge a run for his money, but this Alpha found his sweet side and "Joy". Loved how the story unfolded and the sweet and sassy sides of Joy. Perfect quick read!

Cute and quick holiday read. Just enough dirty bits and sweetness. I love a girl that loves Christmas. It was a bit predictable but still a cute read.

He hates Christmas and she embodies the Christmas spirit. Somehow they manage to weed through misunderstandings. To reach a Christmas HEA.

My kind of author my kind of book. Short, hot and sweet with a happy ending. Looking forward to more from this author.

This is the fourth book I've read by this Author. I've come to see how much her books are inconsistent. One will be really good & the next really bad. This one falls under the bad category.The hero Eb is a jerk. When the heroine Joy hears him talking to his agent and basically saying she was nothing to him but a warm body & he had to scratch an itch. She should have continued to avoid him. I didn't like his half baked apology. It just made me angry. Author's always make the heroine take the hero back so easily, like nothing ever happened. Author's need to realize your fan base is mostly women. We want the hero's to suck up & really be sorry. Instead of you always compromising the heroine.

Great Book, I enjoyed the tales as well as the given explanation that Rab Rami provides on them.It helped me to understand about part of Hasidic Jews vision, hopes and dreams.I could identify myself with many of these moving stories but I could certainly differ in others (that's why the 4 stars); however, they are all good and makes you think on your own beliefs, dreams and values.

I am a friend of Rabbi Rami, his brilliant insights and easily accessible writing has always been a delight. His philosophy combines the ancient mystical teachings of kabbalah and non dualistic Vedanta along with his very long experience with Zen practice make his philosophy truly cross cultural and all encompassing. He is a wonderful compassionate and intelligent man. This is a cherished volume for me one which I read frequently.

This is a collection of stories written by and for Hasidic Jews, which I, a Gentile, read for the purpose of gaining insight into Hasidism. I had found that every Hasidic Jew I had become acquainted with turned out to be very likable, which aroused my curiosity, because I had confused Hasidism with Jewish Fundamentalism, something it most definitely isn't! It is more akin in spirit, I think, to Zen Buddhism, albeit definitely theistic (or panentheistic).These tales also are reminiscent of the parables of the Jewish prophet of more than a millenium and a half earlier, Yeshua bar Miriam, better known today by the distorted version of his name (with every component phoneme changed) after it passed from his native Aramaic thru Greek, Latin, and finally into English, where it came out 'Jesus.' Had he been born in the mid-eighteenth century or later, Jesus might well have become a Hasid.Altho I grew up hearing occasional casual remarks disparaging of Jews, I never got acquainted with any until college, where I discovered that about 40% of the students I found most likable turned out to be from the 5% of the students who were Jewish, an experience which preindisposed me to become bigoted against Jews.These tales, delightful in themselves, conveyed to me much of the essence of Hasidism. While some of them may have more relevance for you if you're Jewish, you definitely don't have to be Jewish to appreciate and enjoy them, and Rabbi Shapiro's notes are very helpful. RIDICULOUS amount of misspelled words! This book is a total joke and basically completely incoherent throughout. The print on the graphs that are used for illustrations is way too small to interpret what message the author is trying to convey. Page 144 the author states that he will give a "refresher" covering indexes on the "next page" but the information is then covered in the next paragraph of THE SAME PAGE. Noone apparently cared even a little bit about editing or proofreading this book so when complicated topics concerning advanced option styles are addressed you cannot decipher or make sense of the information because you do not know if the author has just made even more mistakes on the topic being covered! The entire book is just some lame authors attempt to fill up 350 pages. You know that shirt you bought that was made in some basically unheard of region of the world and you got it home to realize that the tag had been mistakingly sewn onto the outside? This book is the equivalent to that shirt. I'm actually angry that I paid money for this trash. WORTHLESS

The book is rife with grammatical errors. While I was able to discern what the author meant by the context of the sentence, the fact that this got through the proof-reading stage does not encourage me. I have only read the first 100 pages and can report that the first two chapters serve to direct readers to further chapters in the book; I assume this is common to the "Dummies" series but reading these introductory chapters was a waste of time. Lastly, the book would have been improved with some examples illustrating mathematical concepts. As advertised, the book may be a companion to the booklet your broker provides you when you are authorized to begin trading options but readers should expect to have to supplement this book with Internet research. Caveat Emptor.

I've used Dummies books a lot in the past as they are usually great introductions to complicated things with which you have no familiarity. I had the same expectations of this book. The book isn't especially well written or organized, and it isn't a great introduction to options if you have no experience with them. The author dives into a lot of complicated strategies without first providing good explanations of the basic concepts. It's also full of typos and grammatical errors.I was complaining about the book to a friend who'd had the same experience with it, and he let me borrow a copy of "Understanding Options" by Michael Sincere. "Understanding Options" is a great introduction: well organized, well written; it takes a nice linear approach to explaining the basics, and then employing them.Don't waste your money on the Dummies book--get "Understanding Options" instead if you're looking for an introduction to this subject.
