This edition of the presented four plays sets the gold standard for Euripedes translations. Personally, I consider Iphigenia in Aulis and Bacchae are the gems in this volume, though Rhesus and the Cyclops are included (and worthwhile for scholarly reasons).Bacchae is a steadily escalating pressure-cooker of a play, from its opening to its maddening climax (the rewards of impiety in the classical world are often brutal, see Capaneus, but denying a god's divinity to their face is courting disaster).Iphigenia in Aulis is a beautiful, yet sadly altered, story of the sacrifice of Agamemnon's daughter, required to get the Black Ships underway to their army's destiny at Troy. This sacrifice sets Clytemnestra's hatred for her husband boiling, leading to the events of the Oresteia when he returns. It leads to Achilles' disdain for the Atreides, shown further in the Iliad. It shows Menelaus and Agamemnon at loggerheads, and how tenuous Agamemnon's grip over the army is and will remain.Unfortunately, we do not have the entirety of Euripedes' plays, what we do have is a good sampling of some of the best. This is not the first volume I would purchase of Euripedes (as Medea is my favorite of his), this has two of his best and shows his mastery of dramatic tension.

These plays , referring to the entire collection, are almost contemporary in terms of topics and the translations make them an easy read. I can understand why he was so well received in his time.

Purchased this book for my theater class and this version of translation was awesome and easy to read. Like the fact that line numbers are listed so it becomes easy to follow up. I also like the huge twist in the plot of Bacchae - it is a must read Greek tragedy and I would love to see it performed on stage.

I guess I'm a prole, but I liked this much better than Aeschylus because the pace is better, the story is leaner and tighter, and it's not stuffy.It gives considerable insight into the lunacy ancient Greeks were driven to by their worship of cruel, infantile false gods.Don't look for depth here. There is no complexity. It's about like an episode of The Andy Griffith Show or Barney Miller. In fact, you could pretty much take the play as-is and turn it into a short TV movie anyone could understand.

Another fine Lattimore translation of Euripides. This is the best edition of these books to add to your knowledge, your reference library, or both.

If you're ordering this book for a class just make sure your professor is using the same copy & not an older one because the page numbers change, even the translation is slightly different. For example one instance the older copy said ghosts & this copy used phantoms instead This is something my professor discovered in class. Thankfully his copy is the only older one, but it does cause confusion from time to time so just make sure you take that into account when ordering it or making your students purchase this. Other than that, its a great copy/translation of these works. The introduction before each piece is very informative & insightful. It definitely helped other students less familiar with ancient literature get a better grasping of what to look out for.

Prior to reading this book, I had not heard of the story of Michael Rockefeller, and his tragic fate, so this story was totally new to me, and i was really excited to read it. The story is fascinating because of the mix of cultures involved, Dutch colonial ambitions, geopolitical historical aspects, as well as the nature of the wealthy, powerful Rockefeller family. The story presents prime fodder for great characters and a great mystery. It will not spoil the story to say that the fundamental question is "how did Michael Rockefeller die?". The book tells the story by jumping back and forth from more recent times during the author's research and back to the time of Michael's time on the island, up until he disappeared, and the ensuing large search effort. The jumping back and forth in time makes some parts of the book challenging. In addition, the book is made more challenging by the difficulty I had with place names and people names. There are numerous locations of importance referred to in the book, but there is not a single map - I wish there had been at least one map (several times I used Google maps on my smart phone). With regard to people's names, particularly the names of New Guinea tribe and family names, a family tree and/or timeline of relatives would have helped the understanding, and therefore the enjoyment of reading. Coupled with the disjointed time structure, the lack of maps and challenges with place/people names/relations, this book is not as good as it could have been. However, I still enjoyed it, and glad I read it, because the coincidence of peoples in New Guinea at this time in history is really interesting. Regarding the question of Michael's actual fate, I left the book no more convinced of any proposed way in which he could have died. I will not say more on this, so I don't spoil it for others - you'll have to make up your own mind.

Thanks to the daily kindle specials I'm offered, I have read many books I wouldn't have searched for. Savage Harvest was a pleasant surprise. There are many good reviews so I won't be repetitive.There IS a map of the villages and I don't see how this book could be written without going back and forth in time. I certainly didn't find it tedious. Quite the contrary, I couldn't put it down. This kindle version doesn't have the option to find out what percentage of the book has been read/remains so I kept going as I thought I must be nearing the end...and it's now 11 am.I'll be in NYC in a couple of months and I'll have to visit the Museum of Primitive Art at MOMA. I read this on an iPad but will have it on my iPhone 6+ so will be able to refer to the book while there. This is an exciting prospect. To actually SEE the artifacts that Michael Rockefeller acquired and see his photographs will be a big thrill. I hope his journals will also be on display.The cover made me think I was getting a book written decades ago yet the book was published in 2014 and Hoffman's trips were in 2012. It was interesting to see that "ramen" is now a major part of their diet. And the references to John who lives between two villages and works elsewhere for money and has adopted a more modern lifestyle (including satellite TV and watches CNN and BBC) was fascinating.Quite poignant was the author's realization that despite the really primitive conditions he felt a sense of kinship and belonging to a community. He talks about how his father left behind his Orthodox Jewish upbringing and Carl and his sister grew up in a small insular household among families with numerous children.If you like non-fiction, travel narratives, and biographies/memoirs genres, then this has it all. Highly recommend.

Hoffman manages to come up with as close to a clear conclusion on the death of Rockefeller as can be made, half a century after others had failed to do so. His patient immersion in Asmat culture yields dividends when he gets the descendants of those who probably ritually killed Rockefeller to almost admit it.The book is particularly fascinating in the way it interweaves the history, politics, and culture of the time, to show how these all converge on an eager, bright, but unfortunate young man. For example, how the "domino theory" of Asian communism led President Kennedy to try to placate Sukarno and oppose the Dutch. How Dutch colonialists, trying to show that the Netherlands were in control of Papua, led them to murder Asmat, which in turn led the Asmat to take revenge on hapless Rockefeller.The book portrays the Asmat culture to us Westerners in a way that helps to understand their world view. I have visited other remote clans in Papua New Guinea and have some understanding of this. Hoffman gets you deep into these natives' culture.I fault Hoffman for his annoying jumping around in time, backwards and forwards over and over. Very frustrating.And the paperback deserves a more attractive cover!A brilliant study. A compelling read.

This book is a thorough investigation into the disappearance of Michael Rockefeller in New Guinea in the 1960's. But much more than that it is a journey into the mind set of the local people and how they dealt with and deal with their transformation from a closely held culture where logical relations between spirits and humans buttress their way of life into a "modern" culture overlain with government, religion, and lifestyles replete with unsatisfactory contradictions. The author seeks not to judge, but to explain. Starting with a murder mystery he ends up understanding a mind set that can include headhunting and cannibalism.

It was hard to stomach the initial descriptions of the tribal rites, at first. Then, the realization of modern factual events intersecting with my own travels in that geographical vicinity made Hoffman's quest more personal. I even had to check my high school yearbook for my Dutch Indonesian boyfriend's picture to "ground" myself into Hoffman's story. Grossly riveting at times, the mystery of Rockefeller's disappearance came to a somewhat satisfying conclusion.

Wow! This book is AMAZING! IfI could just make my review one sentence I would put- Buy this amazing book NOW! It's seriously that great!I honestly wasn't expecting to adore this book as much as I did. I didn't know much about it going into it either.I think my fascination with futuristic-space-shuttle-living started when I was a kid watching Xenon, Girl of the 21st Century on Disney Channel. And Brightly Burning made me think of that movie but more than any other, it reminded me of Wall-E.One of the things that I loved the most about this book was the romance and I'm usually not a Romance fan. I prefer books that focus more on world-building and plot, characterization. But this book had that AND a great romance! It wasn't an insta-love romance either, which I actually don't mind if done right. It was slow and sweet. I loved the mystery the story was built around as well. A lot of the time I'm able to figure out at the very least the general direction of a story but this one took me completely by surprise and I loved it! It wasn't predictable for me at all. I thought I knew what was going on but I was so wrong! And I loved trying to figure it out along the way.I loved the entire world in this one. The way everything worked. All of it. It was new and exciting. I loved the characters- Stella and Hugo are one of my new favorite ships now. I can't rave about this one enough and I highly recommend it!

I fell into this book head over heels, it swept me up and I couldn't put it down until I finished it!I loved all the book references to not only the Bronte sisters but to Jane Austen and even Harry Potter! Plus so many many others. This story makes one hope that even in the future some of these amazing stories can stand the test of time ,,, even if their pages are faded and the books are falling to pieces.So onto the story -The world building was great, even though they live on space ships which would make one think it'd be a limited world, it's not. The reader gets to explore multiple ships and even see a glimpse of why humans are orbiting earth in the first place ...The romance, it's a retelling of Jane Eyre so if you're familiar with that novel then you have a very good idea of whats's to come .... but it doesn't follow the script of Jane Eyre to a "T" so prepare yourself for some surprises!Lastly, the characters. They were fleshed out and I didn't feel like anyone was just a stand in or only 2D. Great characters and amazing growth!Happy Reading!

Already on my re-read list...This book felt like if Jane Austen wrote YA today. The writing style and voice had a sophisticated feel, but because it was first person perspective and fast paced, it kept my attention and I still really connected with the character.Often in stories set in space there's only one setting, the ship. But the author was able to explore multiple settings in this story making it feel like a real world. The way the ships ran, the jobs, the clothes, food, technology, etc. all made logical sense. The A.I. made me laugh because it's what I imagine the Amazon Echo to be like in a few years. Basically, the setting was an additional character in this story.There were only a few things I did not enjoy, but I want to be clear I still highly recommend this book. The first thing was the fake cursing. It always bugs me when stories make up fake curse words. The next thing was the romance. It felt a tiny bit instalove-ish, even though the characters did connect on a deep level that made sense and one saved the other from a life threatening event. I think because the stakes were so high in the end it felt like would this character really put everything on the line for someone she just met not too recently ago? I think the answer is she would, but while I was reading I felt myself hesitating to believe it. Lastly, everyone kept telling the MC she was bold and it felt condescending which I think the character kind of did say wtf stop calling me that, but still I was like stoppppp every time one of the character said it.Overall I think the voice, setting, plot twists, and main character all made it an amazing story. It is one that I will definitely revisit in the future. And I can't wait for this author's next book to come out (Jane Austen + The Bachelor + Space...um yes please!)

David Day graduated in 1965 with an engineering degree from the University of Arizona. This is a really great guide to a variety of different backcountry areas throughout Colorado. This guide covers a wide swath of the state and a variety of different landscapes. Even lifelong residents of Colorado will probably discover several new gems in this book. The guide is easy to read and is pretty thorough in regards to technical information.

Great book, mostly day hikes but there is a good selection of longer hikes too. Lots of hikes I've never heard of.

Excellent book. A godsend for our hiking club in planning group hikes.

Great trail book. The maps are broken down by milage in sections and I love this!! Wish it had even more trails!!

Best guide for the hikes covered. The pictures speak for themselves.

This is my second David Day book (I also have Utahs Incredible Backcountry Trails) and they are excellent. The maps are very good and the descriptions are accurate and informative. These guides are sure to help you locate and enjoy many hours of hiking on these Awesome trails.

Wonderful, well-written book. Love the photos, maps, and plethora of information.

Must have for anyone trying to escape into the backcountry. Great book.
