We all know that,in most cases, when someone retires their income will decrease. I felt that the dwindling of the middle class was simply a matter of attrition. Boy was I wrong. Hedrick Smith shows the reader that big business along with government is the cause for the diminishing middle class. He shows the reader how it happened and why the programs we have in place, (401K's, company health plans,etc.) are not working. In fact they are part of the problem.This is a very hard book to read (emotionally) and one that is hard to put down because it's like watching a train wreck only the train is America and the middle class are the passengers.Donald Trump may be saying that it is time for America to get tough with the rest of the world. After reading this book I say it is time for the middle class to get tough with our government officials.

I purchased this book as a supplement to teaching Story of the World vol. 1 and the first 3 topics of Learning Adventures (A World of Adventure). This book deals exclusively with Ancient Egypt, Greece, and Rome. It is like a Barron's travel guide but written for a younger reader; probably 7 and up. There are all sorts of tips about food, lodging, local sites, etc., but all written for ancient times. It is such a humorous book! My 9 year old hasn't put it down since it came in the mail the other day. There are all sorts of colorful illustrations to engage the reader and it is very easy to read aloud from this book or to assign a certain topic for your child to read over. The table of contents is well outlined and everything is easy to find. This book makes history fun and brings new life to some dry aspects of ancient history. Your child will feel as if they have actually seen the sites, eaten the food, and dressed and lived with the peoples of those times. The pull out maps are labeled very well and are easy to understand. Overall, this is a wonderful purchase and I hope they have guides covering the other cultures of ancient times.

This book shows most of the methods used to place beams one on top of the other to increase power, but is more of a concepts book to give the reader an idea of the different methods with simple drawing examples and a few formulas to back them up. I was hoping the book would also cover PBS cubes and knife edges, but I guess knife edging isn't technically "combining" but rather stacking or placing beams close together. However PBS cube combining of beams is something which could have been mentioned, although perhaps too simple to be of interest to most, I would have liked to have seen what can be done with them, maybe there are some twists I am unaware of.I gave the book three stars solely due to my disappointment over 88 pages turning into 74, due to the last 14 pages being nothing but advertisements for the authors other books, and the way the Kindle format makes a book appear to have far more information than it really does due to each page being about the quarter of the size you would find in a printed book. This was my only disappointment, the way the information was presented was done very well, the illustrations made complex techniques easy to understand. Although the price might seem high for such a little book, forget trying to find another book on this subject for anywhere close to 30 dollars by another author, this was the least expensive I could find, other books on the subject priced well over 100 dollars.The author obviously believes in keeping the descriptions of the methods as simple and concise as possible, this is very helpful to understanding what is being presented, but at the same time for my money makes the book too small. Perhaps photographs of the types of optic setups being explained could also be included to make us feel better about spending this much for so little information, even if concise by design. (Edit: Feb 2017, the price was reduced to a fraction of its earlier price).

This book provides a great introduction to laser beam combining methods and concepts. It covers the basics ranging from spectral beam combining to coherent beam combining. The book is intended to be an overview of this much researched area and it does a very good job of introducing the reader to the various methods and techniques constructed and tested with laser diodes, fiber lasers and even CO2 lasers. The reader should have completed at least second year college level course work on the basics of lasers, laser beam propagation, and wave theory to get the most out of this book. This is a great starting point for a researcher to get an understanding of the various methods that have been tested and developed over the past 35 years.

In this compelling but challenging children's book, McWhorter tackles the national civil rights movement from Brown v. the Board of Education to the assassination of Martin Luther King Jr. In 1963 McWhorter was a sixth-grader at a segregated Birmingham school, and throughout, this account is both factual and personal. She discusses her feelings as a white child in the South, and she focuses in on the many ways in which both white and black children were involved in the movement: the brave young people who desegregated schools throughout the South, the 1,500 Birmingham students who protested and were attacked by dogs and doused by fire hoses, and white students protesting integration. In the book's most wrenching photograph, two young white children stare at the camera as a black man hangs, lynched, in the background. The breadth and depth of McWhorter's book is exemplary. In addition to learning about King and Rosa Parks, children will read of SNCC, Fred Shuttlesworth, Bayard Rustin, and Autherine Lucy. Some of the more arcane issues such as disagreements between civil rights organizations are beyond the audience, and, unfortunately, there are no source notes. This is a true masterpiece and obligatory reading for anyone who wants to understand the realities of The South in the 1950's and 1960's. Be prepared to be alarmed by the horrors of southern racism, especially in the pre-1960's.

In A Dream Of Freedom, Diane McWhorter gives the 9-12 year old reader a concise history of the American civil rights movement between the years 1954-1968. McWhorter covered some of this material in her earlier civil rights chronicle, Carry Me Home which won the 2002 Pulitzer Prize for non-fiction. A Dream of Freedom opens with a rousing foreward by the legendary Rev Fred Shuttlesworth who is one of the central figures in the story that follows. The book focuses on the turbulent period between 1954-1968 when the growing civil rights movement battled institutional segregation, violence and bloodshed. McWhorter's account is both disturbing and inspirational. She is an excellent storyteller with a straightforward and unflinching delivery. She closes with a poignant epilogue and bibliography that encourages further research. This book is well organized and illustrated with over 120 photographs and collages. A Dream of Freedom should be in every school and public library.

Snap shots of the Civil Rights movement. Each year's events explained in narrative detail, with great pictures. A personal touch of Diane Mcworter, a white child growing up right next door to all these events and oblivious to what was happening. It has taken her years of research to see the truth that was swept under the rug of the white community.

We were the first to check this book out at our library, the day after Rosa Parks died. What a lucky find! We homeschool, and this has been the PERFECT book to fully educate our 8 and 11 year old daughters about the Civil Rights Movement. The chapters are short enough for a kid to digest, and yet manage to completely cover the subject at hand, and the language keeps them interested. You won't find a better book on this subject material for juveniles.
