Actually I have read The Killer Angels many years ago for the 1st time, own a copy of the book myself and unquestionably re-read it at least once-a-year!The 5 copies I bought this time were gifts to friends so that in itself can say a lot of how I feel about the book!It is a very good representation of the Battle of Gettysburg told from the view of handful "main" participating characters. It is fairly accurate historically based on the information that was available in mid-70 (many more things have come to the light since then, but on a larger scheme of things nothing fully distracts from the flow of events and the narration of the story)It is a must for any CW scholar (beginner or not) and I totally recommend it!

Highly recommended. The Killer Angels is one of the most interesting books of war literature I’ve read. It tops several available lists of Best Novels of the Civil War for good reason. It details the battle from the perspective of a number of generals and other military leaders and brings out both the moral and military crises that marked the Civil War. The Red Badge of Courage and Tolstoy’s portrait of Napoleon in War and Peace influence Shaara’s perspective that war is often something that people, even generals, find themselves caught in and that no one entirely controls. Shaara fictionalizes only lightly; he goes into the minds of many of the key figures, but their thoughts are based on information in their own journals and the handling of historical detail is meticulous. The suspense is compelling even though anyone who knows about Gettysburg knows what’s coming. The conflicts between the characters, the moral dilemmas of the war including slavery, and the description of men too old-fashioned for the modern power of their own weapons; it’s all handled precisely and with great narrative energy. It’s a fantastic book about moral compromise and tragic consequences and I didn’t want to put it down.

For such a remarkable book I am not surprised it won the Pulitzer Prize. Each side in this famous battle is fairly presented. As a young boy I visited the site of this great battle and my take, until I read Angels of Death, was that Pickett made a reckless charge (much like The Charge of The Light Brigade) which was doomed from the start. But Pickett was not alone and it was all Robert E Lee's idea. But this fact is really a small part of this book. A more important fact is to discover that Chamberlain is really the hero of this battle and in many ways the best General in the field on both sides. I have never read a book that describes the horrors of war with such poetic honesty.

Gettysburg is considered by many to be the turning point in the Civil War. Using four major participants in the battle to tell the story, you get an intimate look at the people behind the battle, including Lee, Longstreet, Chamberlain and the little remembered union general who chose to occupy the high ground in the battle, a key reason for the outcome. Told through the key participants, you experience what surely must have been a three day nightmare for both sides. In addition you have the emotional experience of knowing the men who fought the battle. I'll never forget Pickets Charge and the hopelessness the reader feels, before it occurs, that it will be the slaughter it turned out to be. This is a highly readable, intimate, very well written, astonishing book about one of the major events in American history...

A really excellent way to get a view of the Gettysburg battle from the perspective of the key characters. It was far more entertaining than long descriptions of troop deployments and casualty counts. I think the author did a great job of recreating conversations that surely must have taken place as well as the personalities of the many characters who took both large and small parts in how the battle unfolded. It was a real page turner for Civil War history buffs but a good read for anyone interested in American history.

The Killer Angels helped me to understand the battle at Gettysburg during America's Civil War. If follows the time leading up to the battle and takes the reader through the battle and brings the characters to life. I've read many books about this horrid battle but Killer Angels ties everything together and highlights the people who fought in it. Based on fact, it helps the reader see this war and the decisions that were made on both sides that lead to victory or defeat. It also makes you wonder about Robert E. Lee's decision making.

I enjoyed the book. However, I did have problems figuring out who was who on which side which is probably due to my advancing age and declining memory. However, I did find the rendition of the Gettysburg battle interesting. Some characters I really cared about died and others survived. It was interesting how opposite generals were viewed by the people fighting the war - especially General Lee. I have been to Gettysburg and was trying to visualize the battle field(s) while reading. The maps did not come through on my Kindle too well but I remembered enough to make it seem real to me. I will recommend this book to those who enjoy Civil War stories as I'm sure there is plenty of historical fact within the book.

I grew up in Chinatown LA. My parents dragged me to many Chinese operas. Even when I had no idea what they were singing, the beautiful costumes and makeup and spectacle were dazzling. This compendium is a wonderful introduction to the art form. I adore paper dolls in general, but Dover paper doll series also instructs. The art work and detail of the costumes are wonderful.

It also encouraged her in her own writing.The illustrations are beautiful and tell the story even without the words - good for teaching extensive reading.I can't say how the book would go over with kids, but this teacher and her low intermediate student give it four enthusiastic thumbs up.

This book is so good! Wonderfully written account of Harriet Tubman and her role in the Underground Railroad. It brought me to tears the way it was written. Perfect for young kids and old alike.

Probably the one book I'd take to a desert island or prison. Herzog kept a journal making Fitzcarraldo and for some reason wrote in a tiny book in a tiny handwritten font that nearly required a magnifying glass to read (thankfully it's not reproduced here). He wrote quite a bit, and not only are some of the stories of making the film utterly fascinating (and have checked out as true), but Herzog's brutally honest approach is very endearing and at times tragic (such as missing his son while he is away filming). I like this one a bit more than Walking in Ice, because Ice is a very solitary journey, but Conquest has other characters, such as Les Blank, Herzog's family at the time, the cast and crew, local people, etc. Conquest shows that Herzog is at root a very good writer, and I think this book contains some of the best writing he's ever done anywhere, be it screenplay (the screenplay for Fitzcarraldo could be seen as a companion piece to this book and is also very good, especially since it doesn't follow the cookie cutter screenplay format) , books, interviews, or narration in documentaries. Highly, highly recommended.

Herzog's massively enjoyable diary effuses wildly tangential impressions: mesmerizing, kaleidoscopic sensory apprehensions, hallucinogenic stories, transient characters, and ubiquitous dread. His core narrative is ethereal; the story progresses primarily as a reaction to Herzog's descriptions of grotesque jungle life, and the even more grotesque life of an independent filmmaker who wishes to pull a ship over a mountain. The result is a type of realism, the reality of which arises from a similarity to human memory. We remember things the way Herzog describes them here, as landscapes characterized by their peaks: heightened tangents, particular vivid sensations, and characters who fade from our lives as quickly and as fully as Mick Jagger disappeared from the Peruvian jungle. Herzog's form of description resembles to me Tarkovsky's exposition of memory in his film Mirror, which is realistic in the same way. If a man could pour his memory into film, it would appear on film as in Mirror, and on paper as in Herzog's Conquest. Highly recommended.

Much as I love Herzog's films I did not expect his observations made while making even a movie as outrageous as Fitzcarraldo to be all THAT interesting. Perhaps I feared the opposite, that they would be too interesting - the weird factor infusing his ruminations with a delirium that would irritate me. As it turns out, the way Herzog documents what he sees and experiences is pitch perfect, avoiding a self-indulgence that generally pervades these things. He cannot avoid himself, his idiosyncrasies and imagination, nor can he ignore the bizarre circumstances. But I never feel that Herzog is demonstrating what a unique genius observes and how it expresses itself. His fodder is inherently fantastic and he has the sense to keep it simple. His notes are engrossing, visual, and yes, at times magically real but everything is somehow grounded. I should have known Herzog's exquisite sense of things would enable him to express the outrageous and fantastic without sacrificing, how Gauguin put it, "The flat sound of my wooden clogs on the cobblestones, deep, hollow and powerful..." Herzog's objective observations of suffering at times added a painful edge to the book. Not that the observations are devoid of compassion, but and good, melodrama is avoided. I fear I'd have been driven mad by all those pleading eyes and desperate creatures: live chickens tied by their legs, dangling off the back of a motorcycle, being choked by dust as their heads bounce on the road; dogs tied up, stranded, thirsty, starving and covered in sores; helpless children - the relentless Amazon. Conquest Of The Useless is one of the most engrossing books I've ever read. For some reason I kept caring.

This book is only peripherally about the film Fitzcarraldo. Yes, it talks about the production, the actors, the budget and more, but the book itself is really more of a look inside Herzog's mind as he works on the film. It is fascinating, very funny, and ultimately very enjoyable. I recommend it for all readers, not just students of film.

Herzog is a unique geniuse who produced this unique work. These are almost hallucinatory notes reflecting his thoughts as he made Fitzcarraldo. Dreams enter into rich descriptions. Some sections may make little sense but the book as a whole reveals how his force of will and vision created the movie. For anyone interested in the making of movies, a creative mind under very difficult circumstances, or the life in a jungle or on a movie shot in location, this book is a must.

This is a fascinating, startingly moving diary. It brings eloquence and artistry to a usually mundane form. I wonder how much Herzog edited these entries, if at all, and if he was thinking of publishing them as he wrote them. I'd love to think they were just his daily scribbles, used to keep himself sane under his burden of dreams. However, if they were contrived to a certain degree all the more power to him for his writerly skill.Great fun to watch the movie again as you read along with his tribulations. Was especially moved by his tendency to describe things as though they were happening in some somnolent state in a country that only existed in his dreams and then how he would effortlessly switch to telling us what he had for lunch.An audio recording of Herzog himself reading these diaries would be priceless. I'd imagine the absurdity would be operatic.

...Harvard professor Juliet Schor has written a timely and convincing work. Schor's argument is that people are actually happier when they are not obsessed with craving material luxuries.Schor's perspective is balanced, realistic, and moderate. Unlike books that offer advice on money management, Schor cuts to the quick and goes to the heart of the problem: we buy not because we need but because we attempt to find identity, status, or security through our purchases.The volume is divided into seven chapters. The first is titled, "Introduction," but is not really merely an introduction. It is a chapter in the fullest sense and might better be titled, "overview." Let me share one of numerous quotables from this section: "American consumers are often not conscious of being motivated by social status and are far more likely to attribute such motives to others than to themselves. We live with high levels of psychological denial about the connection between our buying habits and the social statements they make."The second chapter, "Communicating With Commodities" discusses how people crave the standard of living portrayed by television sitcoms. The American majority is frustrated (and sometimes desperate to attain such a standard) because they compare themselves to these fictious upper middle classed lifestyles. Shcor illustrates where this can lead by referring to the "sneaker murders" where people were actually killed for their shoes (of the "proper" brand, of course).The third chapter, "The Visible Lifestyle" emphasizes the sub-conscious quest for status. In her typically well-balanced perspective, she distinguishes between, "the desire [for] social status [and]...trying to avoid social humiliation." This is a GREAT chapter.The fourth chapter, "When Spending Becomes You" is also superb. She quotes one statistic that 61 per cent of the population ALWAYS has something in mind they look forward to buying. She also discusses how religion used to curtail obsessive materialism and spending, but no longer does. As a professional clergymen, I'll second that. She is right.The last two chapters, "The Downshifter Next Door" and "Learning Diderot's Lesson" offer practical ways to attack this problem. We must change our attitudes and view frugality as a virtue, not a vice. She offers several case studies of "downshifters," those who have decided that, once past a modest financial threshold, family, time, and the deeper things of life are worthy of financial sacrifice.This volume exposes how shallow, foolish, and silly our society has become in our uncontrollable culture of reckless spending. It is a gem of a book, worth your time for sure!

Below are key lessons in the form of excerpts that I found particularly insightful from this book in which Juliet "analyzes the crisis of the American consumer in a culture where spending has become the ultimate social act":1- "While I believe all Americans are deeply affected by consumerism, this book is directed to people...whose income afford comfortable lifestyle. I focus on more affluent consumers not because I believe that inequalities of consuming power are unimportant. Far from it. They are at the heart of the problem. But I believe that achieving an equitable standard of living for all Americans will require that those of us with more comfortable material lives transform our relationship to spending. I offer this book as a step in that direction."2- "This book is about why: About why so many middle-class Americans feel materially dissatisfied...How even a six-figure income can seem inadequate, and why this country saves less than virtually any other nation in the world. It is about the ways in which, for America's middle classes, "spending becomes you," about how it flatters, enhances, and defines people in often wonderful ways, but also how it takes over their lives...IT analyzes how standards of belonging socially have changes in recent decades, and how this change has introduced American to highly intensified spending pressures. And finally, it is about a growing backlash to the consumption culture, a movement of people who are downshifting - by working less, and living their consumer lives much more deliberately."3- "...Even though products carry well-recognized levels of prestige, are associated with particular kinds of people, or convey widely accepted messages, we cannot automatically infer the motivations of the consumers who buy them...There are other sources of meaning (beyond social inequalities). Gender, ethnicity, personal predisposition, and many other factors help structure the meanings and motivation attached to consuming."4- "First, for a significant number of branded and highly advertised products, there are no quality differences discernible to consumers when the labels are removed; and second, variation in prices typically exceeds variation in quality, with the difference being in part a status premium...The extra money we spend could arguably be better used in other ways - improving our public schools, boosting retirement savings, or providing drug treatment for the millions of people the country is locking up in an effort to protect commodities others have acquired. But unless we find a way to dissociate what we buy from who we think we are, redirecting those dollars will prove difficult indeed."5- "Today, in a world where being middle-class is not good enough for many people and indeed that social category seems like an endangered species, securing a place means going upscale. But when everyone is doing it, upscaling can mean simply keeping up. Even when we are aiming high, there's a strong defensive component to our comparisons. We don't want to fall behind or lose the place we've carved out for ourselves."6- "To maintain psychological comfort, most of us must transcend the strictures of the current consumption map...The first step is to decouple spending from our sense of worth, a connection basic to all hierarchical consumption maps. The second is to find a reference group for whom a low-cost lifestyle is socially acceptable."7- "I outline nine principles to help individuals, and the nation, get off the consumer escalator...1) Controlling desire...2) Creating a new consumer symbolism: making exclusivity uncool...3) Controlling ourselves: voluntary restraints on competitive consumption...4) Learning to share: both as a borrower and a lender be...5) Deconstruct the Commercial system: Becoming an Educated Consumer...6) Avoid "Retail Therapy": Spending is Addictive...7) Decommercialize the Rituals...8) Making Time: Is work-and-spend working?...9) The need for a coordinate intervention."8- "It can hardly be possible that the dumbing-down of America has proceeded so far that it's either consumerism or nothing. We remain a creative, resourceful, and caring nation. There's still time left to find our way out of the mall."

Schorr is a fine writer with a good idea, but the lightweight and naive solutions she suggests to solve our overspending are clearly New York editor-think. Like a disjointed movie written by a committee that provides an inappropriate happy ending, Schorr's many editors (she bemoans losing the one who acquired her manuscript) wouldn't let her research speak for itself. Her suggestion that Americans share their riding lawnmowers is perhaps the single dumbest thing I've ever read in a serious book; she must have passively-aggressively written the concluding chapters under duress. Unless they're padding. This is a mighty short book as it is.

This is a very well researched book and has many interesting ideas on how to spend less and worry less about things we don't really "need" but really "want." My only concerns were in the section about "downshifters" - people who work less and make less, but are happier. The book notes that most people who "downshift" were only making $30,000 a year or so to start with - not a lot of room to maneuver downward. I was interested more in those who made much more but kept spending more, which she also alludes to. Still, a very interesting book, with some intriguing ideas about how to control expenditures.

Next, individual North American species are organized into four groups: crocodilians, turtles, lizards, and snakes. Clear, full-color photographs and short capsules of information make it easy to identify each animal and its relatives. The introduction in Trees addresses the characteristics of different North American types, which are then categorized by the shape of their leaves. However, not all trees with the same type of leaves are grouped together, making this title more difficult to use than Reptiles. In addition, some of the photographs are so small that it is impossible to use them for identification purposes. Both books include warnings if an animal or plant is considered harmful. A bit out of date, lacking information on familiar topics. I would love to see these published new and updated.

A wonderful introduction to field guides for the elementary set.

I bought this book for my preschool grandchildren that I care for part time. I had purchased the shell book at a garage sale & they loved it. So I went online to find other book in the same series. It is something that I can enjoy with them together.

Can't figure out who this targets - has very few trees and minimal info on them (most do not have fruit, bark, flower - just leaves), so not useful for anyone doing any serious amount of tree ID. Not good for kids because it includes trees all over North America, but no range maps. WHAT? So for your region, most of your local trees are missing, tons of irrelevant trees are there, and you can't sift through them quickly to find the relevant ones because there are no easy-to-read maps. "Range: Southeastern Canada, Appalachian Mtns." or "Central Canada and US south to Texas". These descriptions are not quick to skim, and not usable at all for young kids. Hopefully, you'll have your first field guide when you are too young to understand this one, and by the time you can understand this one, you should be ready for something far more comprehensive, and with a smaller geographic focus.
