I've used this book since the mid 80's and recently bought it for my son-in-law.For anyone who wants to communicate with others, this book is an essential tool. It is essential for those who are trying to develop their own thoughts and form the words that describe those thoughts, especially of abstractions.The book gives examples for usage which further reinforces the distinctive use of each synonymous word.A quick example considers words such as love and hate. Of the synonyms, love notes feelings with the inclusion of passion, such as love for one's country. As a diametrical opposite, hate connotes an intense dislike causing avoidance and gives a literary reference by Shaw, thus, "hatred is the coward's revenge for being intimidated".I particularly like this last example as it helps me understand the reactions and inabilities of a lot of people.If knowledge is power, then words are the conveyance of that power and this book provides those words.

I've had this particular dictionary many years and found it to be extremely useful in my writing. I wanted to give one as a gift to a young friend who is college-bound. What I got was exactly what I ordered and it was in mint condition. In fact, it was the same edition that I have used for many years. Extremely pleased.

I first discovered this wonderful book in high school, 1957. What I learned was that synonyms may mean the same thing, but they each carry a different connotation. Often the connotation must be correct to carry the meaning you intended. Roget's Thesaurus may get you close, but you need the MW Dictionary of Synonyms to hit the target. For people who like to write and speak correctly, this is a must. I don't believe this is in print any longer, so get yours while they last.JR The Whale

This book is not what I thought it would be . I picked this book because it was an updated 2018 version of Guatemala and the essential guide . First off not one page has any pictures of what Guatemala represents , COLORFUL TEXTILES , all the pictures in this book are buildings on every page, I understand there is a lot of history but that's not all there is , This book should of been named (The buildings of Guatemala ) Th ebook was black and white and a boring ....I opened it ,read a few pages and haven't opened it since . I have a trip in two months and I haven't bothered to get more info and I love readingSecondly it didn't feature the top spots to visit in Guatemala # 1 being Semuc Champey . There wasn't anything on this beautiful place everyone talks about , I was really uninspired from the moment I opened the book . Author did specify the zones as far as safety that I did find helpfulI will give it to the author for leaving his contact information if we have any questions , other than that I was expecting colorful pages and more info on where to exchange money .

This is a rather boring guide book. All of the pictures are in black and white. I don’t think it even has a map of the city! The descriptions of places in the city are all pretty bland. I feel a huge portion of the book focused on the Holy Week schedule which I didn’t need but to be fair it would be useful if you’re in need of the processional schedule. Sadly I wish I had skipped purchasing this book.

This was a really good cookbook. Excellent easy to follow, step by step recipes with helpful tips for substituting for ingredients you may not have on hand. Nice variety of recipes to use in my Instant Pot pressure cooker.

This book has so many recipes that sound delicious and are actually good for you too. What I really appreciated is that there are so many that are vegetarian, gluten free, vegan, or paleo. Essentially, there is something that pretty much anyone can eat, no matter what they are comfortable eating.

Simple clear instructions. A real great variety of foods: standards like mac & cheese, chili, wings. I like the variety of recipes in this book as well as how healthy many of them are. I like how the recipes have the nutrition facts on the bottom.

Very poorly written recipes. Have no idea how this book has gotten the ratings it has. For example, the recipe for Cod in White Sauce does not include how to make the white sauce. This sort of thing is prevalent throughout the book. There is so much room left on all the pages, it would have taken very little effort to expound a bit more.

First, a disclaimer: I have struggled to read this book, starting and stopping (in frustration, in disbelief, in anger at having wasted my money) a half dozen since I downloaded and began to read A CONQUEST IMPOSSIBLE TO RESIST. I currently am at 36% and I'm not sure I'll be able to force myself to finish it.Ms. Laurens is capable of writing enjoyable, engaging romances with actual plots and character development. Just recently, I reread DEVIL'S BRIDE and THE MASTERFUL MR. MONTAGUE and enjoyed them. I've enjoyed the Casebook of Barnaby Adair series and the Lady Obaldstone series. I thought the recent LEGEND OF NIMWAY HALL book was weak and pretty generic as far as the setting went, but still readable.But then this ... mess. I have one question for Ms. Laurens: WTF happened? Is it that when you went to self-publishing, you lost vital input from a talented editor? You lost an honest critique group? Because either of those two would have told you to go back to the computer and do a major rewrite of this one.A CONQUEST IMPOSSIBLE TO RESIST is the story of Demon and Flick's 29-year-old daughter Prudence, now manager of the family stables and its breeding program (you're told, but don't observe), who goes to Ireland to inspect the horses owned by Deaglan, the Earl of Glengarah.Immediately upon setting eyes on each other, the two fall into a case of raging Insta-lust. From that point onward, the story is pages and pages and pages and pages and pages and pages of internal musing about their sexual attraction, interrupted occasionally and briefly by sexual innuendo banter. There are a couple of flashes of possible actual story and decent, familiar Laurens writing, but no, it's back to pages and pages and pages of internal musing about sexual attraction and sex. At 22% (one of those put the book down in disgust moments), the two have known each other for -- what? -- two days and have barely spoken anything but cagey, defensive, manipulative horse-related opening salvos re potential business dealings and some sexual double entendres and innuendos, and suddenly the inaptly named Prudence is slipping off her shoe and playing footsie with the Earl at the family dinner table, for heaven's sake.Then there are pages and pages and pages more of internal musing about sex and a couple preliminary sexual encounters (and, admittedly, some pages of mostly tell-not-show evaluations of horses) and then it's 36% into the story and they're headed off to have sex after Pru tells the earl she wants him to be clear this is just a couple-days-long sexual fling, so don't get any ideas, which makes him immediately decide she's the perfect woman to be his countess ... WTF?Where is the romance in this? Where is the STORY in this? This is supposed to be the Victorian era. Yeah, yeah, it's a Cynster story so there will be the inevitable throw convention to the winds and anticipate the wedding vows, but usually there's some story, some relationship-building, some plot development beforehand. Pru muses about how she's never before really been attracted to a man, so why is she then ready to jump into an brief sexual tryst with this stranger? It makes no sense and it isn't in any way romantic.Anyway, I decided to write my review as a cautionary tale for potential readers so you can decide whether this book looks worth your money to you. I wish someone else had posted something like this so I could have spent my dollars on something more worthwhile.If I'm ever able to drum up the interest to finish this book, I'll add to my review; but frankly, I think this is the last Cynster book I'll be reading.I sure hope Ms. Laurens doesn't take the Casebook of Barnaby Adair series into "Insta-lust and pages and pages of sex is an adequate substitute for plot and character development" style of writing, or it'll be the end of the road there for me as well.

Stephanie Laurens used to be one of my favorite authors - but NO MORE! This book and the one published directly before are wordy, wordy, wordy. I don't know what has happened with her Editor and Publisher but my guess is they have both LOST their RED PENCILS! I wish Amazon would have a CANCEL button to use for a book after it has been received because I would return this book immediately and expect my money back. I have managed to plow my way through less than 30% of this novel. What a Disappointment! I could not make myself fight my way through anymore extraneous dialog. I have also cancelled Stephanie's next Cavanaughs book, "The Pursuits of Lord Kit Cavanaugh" (The Cavanaughs Book 2) rather than waste my money again.

I have read all of the Cynster books and while I agree with some of the comments already made (instant lust dominated too fast/too long with none of the subtle engaging as in when Devil met Honoria), I also thought some were too harsh. I did enjoy the book. Being familiar with the "Bar Cynster" and their stories, I looked forward to the tales of the next generation and while a couple were a little weak (this one and Sebastian's story), I have enjoyed reading about the adults they have become. In this book, Prudence takes on the task of determining the quality of horses wishing to breed with the Cynster stables. There is much detail on how this evaluating is done - some rather tedious - but of course there is a side romance and a mystery to handle as well. Is this her best writing? No. Best editing? No. (Pru's two closest friends are Antonia and Catriona??? Her aunt??) Was it worth the read? Yes, to me it was. I wanted to see where Pru's path led her and was glad of the chance to look in at Demon and Flip again. And I look forward to Christopher's story. Not every book, by any author, is five star but Stephanie Laurens (and her readers) knows her characters and she has given me many hours of enjoyment over the years. I expect that will continue.

Humm, the reviews for this book are surprising. I have read just about everything Stephanie has written and all of the Cynster books. This book is a twist on the plot if you read a lot of Regency romance's.Usually there is something that brings the H & H together, murder, scandal, problems with the family ect. But this is Prudence's story and to any who have read books that included her growing up you know she is not a normal girl of that period. If she had a problem or needed help she would never turn to a strange man of the ton. Pru would just ask the man in her family for help. She grew up with some of the worst Rake's being her father, uncles and cousin's. She has always been horse crazy, and spent more time with her father Demon in the stable then on the dance floor. After a number of season's due to her mother Felicity/Flick making her go. And a number of offer's of marriage that she turned down.She is in charge of the Cynster breeding program, she receives a letter from the Earl of Glengarah about breeding from their horse's. No on has ever been able to view the collection of Glengarah horse's. So she goes to Ireland, and meet Deaglan other rake, but she is there to see the horse's.But when they meet for the first time in her life, she has an attraction to the handsome Earl.Deaglan, is also surprised by his immediate response to a high lady of the ton.These two have to follow there attraction, and find common ground, so they are already trusting each other before the drama starts.Someone does not want a deal between the Cynster's and the Glengarah and will stop at nothingto stop it.Please give this book a change, it is different but just as wonderful as all of Stephanie's stories are.

I have read all of Stephanie Laurens books and still enjoy each one. I reread when I have the time, and she is on my always buy list. I've searched for out of date books to catch up on here backlist. I've been lucky enough to find them. I recommend you settle in a lazy chair and sink into the era of romance. Thank you!

Dash's sociology of the paranormal (Borderlands) and of obsession in Holland (Tulipomania) prepared him nicely for this telling of a 17th-century ship loaded with Dutchmen, treasure and fanaticism. In 1629 the Batavia, a 160-foot merchant ship launched by the Dutch East India Company, was carrying silver to East India when it ran upon coral atolls northwest of Australia and coughed up its passengers. In Dash's account, the survivors 300 passengers and about 50 sociopathic crewmen settled on the tiny island, soon to be called Batavia's Graveyard, and quickly became madhouse models of Dutch social classes. Officers set out in life boats to Java for help, leaving Jeronimus Corneliszoon, a failed apothecary and heretic, in charge; he began terrorizing his own crewmen, then the other marooned passengers. Within two months, 115 of the survivors (including 30 women and children) had murdered each other with swords, pikes, daggers and by drowning (Corneliszoon poisoned an infant that kept him awake). In a narrative reminiscent of Lord of the Flies, Dash describes the creeping sadism that sprang from Holland's religious conflicts, which were channeled through the Jim Jones-like charisma of Corneliszoon. The book is driven by Dash's research (a quarter of the book is notes and appendices, including material from newly discovered records in Holland), but the same attention to detail (e.g., the narrative lists and the psychobiography of Corneliszoon) interrupts the pace. The story of the Batavia incident is already well recorded, and even though Dash has taken it to a new level of grotesque accuracy, his nautical drama never truly comes to life. Horror on the seas. Never has there been a more unbelievable tale of men turning into animals. This book should be taught in schools, studied by professionals, etc. It's hard to describe without spoilers. Let's just say one man leads many to do a great deal of evil. Like Hitler on a tiny island in the ocean. It wasn't enjoyable to read, but it was so fascinating I had to keep reading. You have to keep going just to find out what happens! I gave the book to my father and he devoured it quickly as well. After reading this, I tried to read another shipwreck story with mutiny involved, and it paled in comparison to the point where I couldnt even read it. This book will cast a large shadow over all other mutiny books, and turn the volume down on them. Beware!

Although these killings took place almost 400 years ago on deserted islands in a then barely explored corner of the Indian Ocean, the scale of these crimes makes Helter Skelter look like the JV team! The story did actually remind me of the Charles Manson killings, in which another megalomaniacal madman had others do his heinous bidding.The book is very well written and researched, although at times the author digresses into excessive background detail that dampens any expectation that this will be a dramatic page-turner throughout. Nevertheless, it certainly kept my interest consistently enough to successfully coax me into reading the entire book, along with its epilogue.The other issue with this book is just the disturbing nature of the subject matter (I had been completely unaware of this episode of history). Without revealing too much, however, I will simply say that there is a gratifying element of good triumphing over evil that is endemic to the story; not sure I would have finished reading the book if at some point it had become evident that that element was not going to be a part of the story line.

This book is a surprising gem, bringing to life a period of history which not many contemporary authors have paid much attention to.The life and times of the Dutch during the zenith of their influence and power in the 16th century as the premier commercial traders of the world is described in the context of a truly horrible story of mutiny, madness and slaughter.Dash describes life aboard a Dutch sailing vessel of the period at a time in which little was known about nautical navigation. Life and physical accommodations aboard ship itself were a nightmare to all but the wealthiest travelers .Based on extensive research, including ship's logs, the Dutch Trading Company's (VOC) records, memoirs and letters of several principals involved and even anthropological evidence unearthed in the 1960's and 70's, one is swept into a fascinating look at how a voyage of commerce to the East Indies ended in shipwreck, followed by the breakdown of civil behavior among the survivors and leading to the murders of dozens of innocent people for no reason other than to satisfy the blood lust of the leader of a relatively (at first) small number of mutineers.That any of the crew and passengers survived, marooned on a small coral atoll in the East Indian Sea is astonishing. The subsequent rescue of survivors and punishment of those guilty for the slaughter provides a fitting end to this well written sea tale.To readers interested in expanding their knowledge of world History I heartily recommend this book. You won't regret it.

A well researched and well written account of one of the most horrific ship wrecks in history. The wreck itself was a disaster but what some of the survivors did to their shipmates afterward is hard to believe and terrible to read about, even in todays worlds of serial killers and mass murders.Reading this book it's difficult to believe that human beings can commit some of the acts that are depicted. And for no real reason other than to wield power over others.This book also paints a detailed and rather unflattering portrait of the Dutch East India Company (VOC) and it's business practices. While the ship wreck survivors acted the way they did to gain power and survive a hostile landscape, the VOC did it out of pure greed. I'm not sure who comes off looking worse in the end...A great historical account of a dark page in world history, easy to read and informative, it sheds light on a little seen part of history, definitely worth a look.

The title of this book is somewhat misleading, in that "heresy" is the least of the offences committed by the guy. And it didn't really play much of a role in how this story unfolds. But the actions described in this book are indeed shocking, and so depraved, I was surprised I had never heard of it before. What went on after the Batavia sank was so horrendous, it is hard to believe - but it really happened. Anyone interested in Dutch history would like this book. It goes into a lot of detail about the Dutch East India Company and how they did business. Most of the names are unpronounceable, but other than that, it is a most interesting read.

A fantastic narrative of one of the grimmer events of the age of sail. It's something more people in the modern age should read. Currently, there's a lot of misplaced longing for a past that is supposed to somehow be more moral, noble, chivalrous, and such. The reality is that there is no such past. Nostalgia is history poorly remembered. The Anabaptists were as crazy as Al-Quaeda or Daesh. The Dutch East India Company was as corrupt, shambling, and destructive as any modern corporate hegemon. And life was dangerous, full of deadly diseases, crazy people, social prejudice, and superstition. Mike Dash does a good job of turning the various chronicles, records,and recollections of this shocking episode into a readable and accessible story. There's no shortage of extra data at the end for those who want to really get into the details. That's the most salient part: this isn't the work of some crazy novelist, but the horrifying history you didn't learn about in school - a journey into the dark heart of humanity that has gone off the rails. Oh, and do not read this before going to bed.

Lucien Avramov , CCIE 19945, is a Senior Technical Marketing Engineer at Cisco. Lucien specializes in the Nexus data center portfolio and the ACI. Lucien designs datacenter networks worldwide and has a wide experience in switch architectures, QoS, ultra-low latency networks, high-performance computing designs, and OpenStack. Lucien is a distinguished Cisco Live speaker and former TAC technical leader, he has several industry certifications, authors RFCs at IETF, and owns an active patent. Lucien holds a master’s degree in Computer Science and a bachelor’s degree in General Engineering from Ecole des Mines d’Ales, France. In his spare time, Lucien can be found hiking, biking, running marathons around the world, and on Twitter: @flying91.   Maurizio Portolani , Distinguished Technical Marketing Engineer at Cisco Systems, focuses on the design of data center networks. He coauthored Data Center Fundamentals for Cisco Press, and holds several patents on current data center technologies. The following limitations exists in the book from my point of view:1. Missing a practice lab. Nexus 9000 series isn't a "network toy" that can be played down in the reader home / business.2. Its highly recommended to re-order the book content. The design information should appear in the first paragraphs and only after it, the paragraphs that contain the configurations steps should appear.3. A pre-requisite to this book should be set to excellent knowledgebase/control on NX-OS and Overlay protocols.A short feedback to Cisco: The ACI is an excellent solution. However, the solution require a highly expertly and its a very costly solution.

Excellent overview of ACI, read it a couple of years back and it helps grasp all the moving parts involved with ACI. A must read prior any ACI planning or implementation.

This book does a very good job of describing the concepts and architecture of ACI. The subjects covered will allow you to discuss ACI intelligently and understand new terminology. It is not meant to be a deployment guide. ACI is changing rapidly and even Cisco is changing deployment recommendations on a regular basis.

This book covers a lot and is great for the company doing a greenfield approach to ACI

The technology backgrounds of Mr. Avramov and Mr. Portolani ensures that the reader can rely that the information presented in the book can help them design and maintain high available data centers utilizing Cisco’s ACI methodology.As the author’s state, “Cisco’s ACI is a data center fabric that enables you to integrate virtual and physical workloads in a highly programmable multi-hypervisor environment that is designed for any multi-service or cloud data center”. Utilizing and implementing ACI in your data center will safeguard your environment and help product your information technology investments in the future.The book is a fast paced walkthrough in order to understand the concepts to build and maintain the Cisco ACI environment. The reader will quickly understand the underlying methods of utilizing ACI. The material presented by the authors begins with the general parameters that are typically found in the modern data center to include the cloud. Thereafter, the information presented dives into a very through and technical presentation of the design and services to implement, operate and maintain ACI within the data center.I would consider this material a resource to be placed within your technical library and referenced often. The only two suggestions for possible improvements that may be able to be utilized in future editions, are to include resources/references to examples of data center designs in order for the reader to leverage in their environment, as well as a soft-copy of the book and materials that would include additional case studies. I rate this book 4 out of 5 stars.

I really enjoyed this book. I had heard about ACI, which included watched a couple of youtube videos and read a couple of articles. After doing all this research, I felt like there were a lot of unanswered questions and this book was excellent in not only filling in the gaps in understanding for ACI, but datacenter networking in general. Thanks to this book, I feel much more knowledgeable in how datacenter networks were built in the past, how they are being built now, and how ACI will take advantage of these improvements. The authors expertly towed the line between exposure and over-exposure by introducing XML, JSON, and python without going into levels of depth that are just well beyond my comprehension. I also particularly enjoyed the last chapter on the switching architectures. I did not expect to learn so much and the authors should feel really good about creating a book that does such a good job advancing not only ACI, but datacenter concepts in general.

Then, they illustrate the design and technology requirements of building a cloud. Next, the authors elucidate the Cisco ACI approach to modeling business applications. In addition, they then cover the key technologies and tools that new administrators and operators must be familiar with, and it explain how they are used in an ACI-based data center. The authors then describe the networking requirements and design considerations when using hypervisors in the data center. They continue by explaining in detail OpenStack and its relation to Cisco ACI. The authors then describe the topology of an ACI fabric and how to configure it both as an infrastructure administrator and as a tenant administrator. Next, they describe the service graph concept and how to design for service insertion with the service graph.Then, the authors explain centralized troubleshooting techniques that ACI offers for isolating problems. Finally, they provide a clear explanation of the data center switching architecture.This excellent book also covers the topics of segmentation, multi-tenancy, connectivity to physical and virtual servers, and external connectivity as part of the tenant configuration. Also, this great book explains what OpenStack is and present the details of the Cisco ACI APIC OpenStack driver architecture.
