This is my absolute favorite book from childhood. I think it honestly may have influenced my adult life- I spent almost 10 years abroad, and I also thought- "ok, I have traveled the world, I have lived by the sea, now I just have to do something to make the world a more beautiful place." I have given this book as a gift to many children, most recently my goddaughter. I hope it will have the same effect on her as it did on me. Miss Rumphius is a beautiful woman!
Wow; this book is really something special! True, it might make you cry, but for all the right reasons. It causes the reader to pause and think about what really matters in life. The artwork is beautiful, the story unique. I am so glad to share this with my children. Miss Rumphius details an adventure filled life, all the while seeking to make the world a more beautiful place, by doing something all her own. How will she accomplish this task? The reader must find out, because I'm not going to spoil it for you! :) I encourage anyone to read this book!
This story is delightful and the pictures very engaging. I read it to my granddaughter when she was little - she is 22 now and still remembers this book with great affection. Which is why I bought this copy. She was explaining to her new husband about the "Lupine Lady" when they were on a visit to Yosemite and she told me she'd forgotten some of the details. I was so happy to see this book was still available! I bought a copy and sent it to her so she could share "The Lupine Lady" with her husband and perhaps her children later on!! (When she has them! HA!)
I discovered this book when my daughter was very young, and I still love to read it,even though (or especially because) I am nearly 60 now. I finally live in a village near the sea, and I am sowing lupine seeds everywhere to spread beauty,like Miss Rumphius. When I moved from Boston to Gloucester, my girl gave me a packet of lupine seeds from Maine, where we used to vacation. She told me to follow my bliss and make the world more beautiful, like Miss Rumphius. I guess we were both affected by this special book, gorgeously illustrated with a rich and wonderful narrative, especially powerful for girls. I have an undergraduate and graduate degree in English, and this book rivals the best literature I have ever read. Buy it. Treasure it! Give it as a gift. Don't let it go out of print.
This is a lovely story about fulfilling your childhood hopes, journeying the world, and then coming home to figure out how to make the world more beautiful--and finding that something as simple as flowers can spread joy. The story is told in such a lovely, soothing cadence that it is a perfect bedtime or calm-down story. My four year olds ask for it often.
One of my top 25 favorite children's books! Beautiful illustrations (as with all Cooney books!) and sweet, nostalgic story that I enjoy as much as my children. Miss Rumphius desires to make the world a more beautiful place, and comes up with a delightful way to leave a legacy behind. A great book to sneak in some nature study about various flowers, how flowers grow, and seaside climates.
This was one of my favorite books as a kid. If I remember correctly, I first saw this on Reading Rainbow and then checked it out from the library after that. I loved the illustrations and the message, which is to do something that makes the world a better place.This is a wonderful storybook and my daughter loves it too. Even though she's only 3 I can tell that she is trying to understand the concepts, but mostly she's enjoying the pictures. Probably better for elementary aged children (my teacher read this to us in 2nd or 3rd grade and we did a little unit on it) but could definitely be good for young ones too, since it's a sweet story.

It is my favorite gift to childrenbecause it reminds us that each of us can do at least one thing to make the world a better place.It is a lesson in nature and loving humanity. .. and it takes place in beautiful place which I have visitedfirsthand... buy this book for a child.. probably no younger than 5.. oh what a delight.
