With them, Harry leads a miserable existence, until one day an owl brings him a mysterious letter. What the letter contains opens an entirely new world for Harry, one that begins with this enchanting first book in the series.I came to the Harry Potter series quite late; I didn't read them as a kid due to the witchcraft controversy, and just never got around to it after that. I finally bought Sorcerer's Stone for my Kindle to see what all the fuss was about...and because, I admit, I've always wanted a little magic in my life in some form. J.K. Rowling does not disappoint. Her writing is geared toward children, so there are some things I would normally object to, such as telling over showing, narrative summary, and the use of adverbs to describe how people do and say things. But again, considering the audience, I'm inclined to let that stuff slide.The story itself is, as I mentioned, enchanting. Harry has the perfect pair of eyes through which to view Hogwarts for the first time. Reading this book felt like starting at a new school myself--everything is new and different, there are new friends and adversaries to meet, and adventure waits everywhere. J.K. Rowling does a beautiful job describing and presenting the Hogwarts environment. Harry, Ron, and Hermione deal with typical middle school stuff, such as strict teachers and school bullies. But how many other kids do you know who also bond over getting a mountain troll out of the girls' room? Playing a literally killer game of chess? Smuggling a dragon onto the school roof so it can be transported to safety? Each mini-adventure and plot point is excellently done.As for the characters, they're engaging and incite plenty of empathy. This is especially true and important for protagonist Harry. In the beginning, he naturally incites a lot of pathos, but this boy is not a victim. Once he gets his legs under him, and his self-esteem gets a needed boost, he becomes quite the little hero without being obnoxious about it. My favorite scenes definitely involve him standing up to Draco Malfoy, especially for other students like Neville.Ron gets a chuckle every now and then, although he's frustratingly impulsive at times. Basically, he's the kind of kid you just want to hug. As for Hermione, I can see her becoming one of my fictitious soul sisters. Like her, I was a diligent and perfectionist student, though I hope for my classmates' sake I wasn't quite that much of a know-it-all. Like Hermione, I also struggled with making friends, but those I have are friends for life. (I'm not gonna lie; I'm kind of mad and disappointed that this isn't the Hermione Granger series).J.K. throws in a couple of twists at the end; they're nothing an adult couldn't figure out, but they are enjoyable. I also loved the trio's final adventure as they searched for the Stone, particularly Hermione's talent at solving the logic puzzle. Other highlights for me included the Mirror of Erised, Harry's first Quidditch game against Slytherin, and Hagrid himself, a well-drawn secondary character. He sort of acts as Harry's fairy godfather...or should that be hairy godfather?For any parents who might be wondering about the witchcraft element: No worries. What's here is downright tame, if it exists at all. It's mostly kids waving wands around, changing matches into needles, and learning how to fly on broomsticks. The scene in the Forbidden Forest involves some talk of astrology and the slaying of a unicorn, but nothing too intense. Personally, I'm ready to put on my Ravenclaw robes, pick up my fictional wand (beechwood with unicorn core, 10.5 inches, slightly springy) and read the next book.

SPECIAL NOTE: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases (with the exception of changing all "Philosopher's Stone" mentions to "Sorcerer's Stone"). So far, I have noticed the following: (EU/US) dialling / dialing; Shan't! / Won't!; sherbet lemon / lemon drop; motorbike / motorcycle; and dustbin / trashcan. For many purists of the series who never liked the idea of modifying the original text for an American audience, this is a good thing. Good or bad is naturally for each reader to decide--just know, if you plan to read the books while listening to Jim Dale's audiobooks, you'll notice a few superficial differences.The quality of this new illustrated edition is phenomenal. I've been excited about the release of this book since it was announced, but I never expected the book as a whole to be so well crafted.A couple of things to note:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy red hardback with gold lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains".I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. If this book is a demonstration of what is to come with the illustrated editions for the rest of the series, we're all in for six more impeccable treats.

I LOVE THE STORY. Illustrations are great. PROBLEM is that the book came missing pages 153-168 because 137-152 were printed twice. It took me a week to realize this. You will want to check your books. I'm sure Amazon will take care of me but thank goodness I wasn't gifting this.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

I think this is my third reading of the Harry Potter series. The first time is a precious memory to me. Our four children would all climb into our king size bed before bedtime and we would read one or two chapters each evening. We homeschooled so, as each child's reading progressed, they read a part too. Their mom died. They're in late 20s now. Five grandkids. Those will be ready to read to before we know it. But life is not always neatly packaged. I married a widow and moved us all. Today they are off to their own lives. My four and I are scattered across four states and even overseas. So, I'm reading to myself now. I can't make a stronger recommendation than to say that I immediately purchased "The Order Of The Phoenix" after finishing this one. I also have the set in hardbound on the bookshelf beside me. But Kindle is just too convenient. *smile*

This is a very foundational spiritual book. Short and to the point about the different inner tangles we need to be freed of and the power of very simple contemplation to free us. I was looking for a book to jump start my contemplative practice and this was just what I needed.

Thomas Keating writes beautifully and his prose is understandable by the theologian or the lay reader starting with contemplative prayer. I studied the book with a small group of clergy and lay and am now rereading it slowly to engage my own spiritual growth.

Thomas Keating is such a joy. I love how he breaks down complex ideas about life and spirituality in such easy to understand ways. Excellent book!

Each of these books in the Harry Potter series is a 'cover to cover read', as soon as I can buy them. Each is a gift to world literature.

I ordered this book for my daughter and she couldn’t put it down but at page 573, it jumped to 620. I’ve missed the return window. Just make sure to check the pages as soon as you receive the book.

Great price, but it is all 7 books combined into one volume and one table of contents; which makes navigating to different books and chapters a bit more difficult than if they were 7 distinct books.

IMPORTANT: For U.S. customers purchasing the illustrated edition of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets, you will notice the text has NOT been converted to the "Americanized" version of the original U.S. releases. This difference isn't as prominent or noticeable as it was with Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's/Philosopher's Stone, but still something to keep in mind. Also, to answer a question that has come up quite a bit, this is the FULL BOOK and not an abridged or shortened version.The overall quality is fantastic. The colors are vibrant and the images are, in my opinion, even better than those in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: The Illustrated Edition (Harry Potter, Book 1).The best features:1. Underneath the book jacket, the novel is bound in a sturdy orange hardback with green lettering on the spine.2. The paper is thick with an eggshell glossy finish.3. All chapter intros are illustrated.4. Some images take up full pages or multiple pages. Most illustrations share the page with text.5. Every inch of the book is illustrated or decorated in some fashion. There are NO white pages in the book. Even the pages without large illustrations have the paper printed and marked with ink blots or paper "stains". In Chamber of Secrets (compared to Sorcerer's Stone), some pages even have beautiful patterns over the entire page. One page has a spider-web pattern and is right next to a picture of Aragog. Quite brilliant overall.I would highly recommend this for anyone looking to read the series (again, or for the first time), especially if you plan to read this with someone younger. Based on the fact that the illustrations for this book were even better than in the first book, I'm now looking forward to the rest of the series even more. Prisoner of Azkaban is next and I'm heartbroken it'll be so long before I get to have it in my collection.

I didn't read Potter as a child, unfortunately Christians were making a fuss over it and it was banned. Now as an adult with an 11 year old daughter I delved in and having read the firs chapter of the first book , I declared I didn't get the fuss...I am now in my second read through of the books. I finished them in three weeks. I suppose if you're the type to ban Disney then these aren't for you, but for the rest of the population they're really harmless and silly.The later books are a bit darker but the first several are really kind of cartoon magic.This second book is better than the first as we are already introduced to all the characters. Character development and friendships deepen in the second book and you begin to become attached to the little magicians and start to realize why this series created such a rabid fandom.The books are adventurous and imaginative and have so much heart. The stories are packed with substance- very little to no filler in these books. They're a kids series, but it's the first time in a long time I have read a book and didn't feel like skimming a good bit. There's nothing you want to miss in these!It's great for a parent to read with their child, bc anytime you can bond over something especially as they get older it's a wonderful thing.And for those adults who didn't read as a kid, go ahead, you won't be bored. Yes they're kids books but they're written on a level everyone can enjoy. That's the real magic!

The Chamber of Secrets is in my opinion the weakest of the Harry Potter books. Still, it is a great read compared to 90% of other books in general, and 99% of other children's fantasy novels. The art in these books are simply amazing. They add to the story subtly, rather than take the story over as the movies did. To me, this is vital, as part of the joy of the Harry Potter world is the evocation of your imagination. I am happy to give my kids a little push with art, as they clearly still create their own images of quidditch, Hagrid, and the often explosive and unexpected effects of Ron's broken wand.

These illustrated editions of Harry Potter were done right! All of the original text is there and the artwork is beautiful. Every page has something, whether it's an illustration that takes up a full double page spread, a little drawing in the corner, a thematic border, or just a visually textured background. It may sound chaotic, like the visuals could be too much and break up the flow of reading but it is not; it enhances the story as you turn the pages and delight in the new visuals that each page brings. I imagine these would be a great way to bring children into the story, but they're so nice you may want to protect and collect these beauties. I can't wait for them to release the others.

“Mermaids in Wonderland” is the second beautiful coloring book by Marcos Chin. There are many beautiful undersea designs with many mermaids. There is also fish and other sea creatures and plants. The designs are detailed and fun to color. While there are small areas to color, for the most part, I don't consider the designs to be intricate and difficult to color.As with Mr. Chin's earlier coloring book, this one is divided into two parts. The first (and larger) part is white background and the second part is with black background. There are a lot (more than I prefer) puzzle solving opportunities on the pages. I wish that the artists would put the puzzle queries on a single page (with pointers to the pages involved) and leave the wording off the coloring page. That's my personal preference but others may like the puzzles as-is.The cover of this book is very pretty. It has copper metallic accents and some of the elements are touched with clue and green tones while others are left as black on white line drawings. The front and back cover fold out with coloring opportunities on the inside (white background at the front cover and black background at the back), however, the paper is slick. There are also four detachable (perforated) postcards printed on a good heavyweight card stock. The postcards are pre-set up for address and stamp areas.In my coloring book, the alignment of the pages was quite good. The binding is sewn rather than glued, so you can remove several whole pages at a time without loss of design by snipping a few threads. I was able to get the book to lay flat by breaking the spine slightly by push down very hard to fully open the book.This is what I found while coloring in this book and testing the paper with my coloring medium:94 pages of Mermaid Designs with a considerable number of puzzle to solvePrinted on both sides of the pagePaper is heavyweight, white, slightly smooth and non-perforatedSewn BindingMany designs spread across two pagesMany designs merge into the binding area (especially two-page spreads)Alcohol-based markers bleed through the pageWater-based markers can spot through and leave shadows on the back of the page. As with the prior book in this series, my worst experience was with Staedler triplus fineliners. The brush end of Tombow dual markers did not bleed through or leave shadows.India Ink pens and gel pens do not bleed through or leave shadows. Gel pens take more time to dry than usual.Colored pencils worked with with this paper. I tested both oil and wax based with good results. While the paper is lightly smooth, it still had enough tooth for good pigment, layering and blending.

Marco's two books are beautiful. They are beautifully drawn and in a style uniquely his. The spaces are small, but colorable! The paper is quite nice and will take water-based markers Crayolas, Tombows) without bleeding through to the other side. I hope there's a flip-through somewhere that you can see!

I just got this book and I am frustrated with it for 2 reasons. It's a one project book (and I knew that when I ordered it) to learn how to make striped meringue kisses. That involves three things--making the meringue, piping the kisses with colored stripes and baking them. I am a pretty confident baker but I wasn't sure how to color the meringues, specifically what food coloring to use. As meringue is really sensitive to liquids and oils I didn't know intuitively what food coloring product to use and I didn't feel like going through a bunch of trial and error so I did the lazy thing and bought the book.In the whole book the only thing said about food coloring is this: "Using natural food coloring...". That's the only time it's mentioned. In my house I have liquid, gel, paste and air brush food coloring. The book doesn't tell me which products will work and which ones won't and it doesn't tell me why the authors use natural food coloring. Is it a preference of the authors or will my meringues absolutely deflate if I use a commercial product? I have no more information than I did before I bought the book.The second reason I am frustrated is the interactive content. There are 9 or 10 interactive videos referenced in the text. Maybe there is more information in the interactive content but it is only accessible through an app called Layar and I don't have a smartphone. The book lists no other way to access the videos. If I wanted to buy a smartphone with an app called Layar on it I would have ordered that but I ordered a book. Please give me more than one way to access your interactive content. So frustrating.

Then they taste the aweome product of my creations and they understand! Meringues are a great high protein sweet that maked me feel better about eating than other alternatives! I never knew a book like this existed. It is a great addition to my collection of African-American/Afro-Caribbean history.

This book purports to show us something new, but it doesn't. It has nice pictures, but nothing new in theory or new contributions in research. Glass makes several fundamental mistakes and approaches the subject matter as "Negro fetish" instead of the serious cultural document that this dance really is. It focuses heavily on the same type of approach that Lynne Emery uses and contributes nothing new there. As an outsider to the culture, Barbara Glass has never done any of the social dances and can not perform even one of them. She totally neglects the important role of cultural leadership and the resistance theme evident in much of the dance she describes but failed to recognize. This book would be great for high school students or the casual reader who want an elementary and simplistic accounting of "Black Dance." It holds nothing for the serious researcher and misses numerous opportunities to debunk the racist language of past ages instead Glass uses that same language uncritically.

More than just book of wonderful recipes, this is a book that chronicles an extraordinary life-- a life well lived. A beautifully written verbal map precedes each recipe and gives the food historical and visual context. The images conjured by Mr. Kempton’s prose made me feel connected to the food, as if I were dining in a Basque village or some tropical paradise. Oh yes, the food is delicious, and the recipes are well executed and easy to follow. I found that Amazon is able to deliver many of the exotic or difficult to find ingredients in one day.

Surfers and non-surfers will all enjoy and cherish this book. I've purchased 3 copies ( as gifts) because Jim's book is perfect for anyone who enjoys travel, cooking, great photography, and has a respect for global surfing.

Great book written by a high school friend. Am enjoying the stories and will soon try some of the recipes.

The recipes are inspiring, diverse, and mostly pretty simple; the author's stories from his world travels are engaging even for non-surfers; and the photography, both of the food and the destinations (Morocco, Hawaii, Peru, California, France, and more), is gorgeous.

I initially bought this book as a hostess gift (its visually appealing cover caught my eye.) Before my event, I couldn't help but take my own sneak peek. I found myself completely captivated by Jim's stories and imagery. Each recipe is beautifully set up by putting the reader in the location and experiencing the culture from where the recipe originated. Of course, I couldn't help but purchase a copy of my own!! I also love that there is so much recipe variety (in terms of both region and meal course.) I highly recommend for surfers and non-surfers alike! I'm sure I'll be buying again as it truly does make a great gift and one that I can be proud giving.

Good stories that made me remember some fine old times. Time with friends doing 2 things we love to do; surf and eat! Isn't that what a good book should do...put the reader right into the scene. Kempton does that very well. Then comes the food. The recipes all sound amazing. The crab bisque is delicious. I haven't prepared many of these yet but I will be.

Taking inspiration from his own experiences as a surfer, journalist, entrepreneur, and world traveler. Jim has created a blend of gourmet and visual thought-provoking reflections of scenes few will ever experience.Jim gives food for thought, for readers to imagine themselves as part of an interesting culture. Incredible photos, stories, and fantastic recipes, makes this book a must for anyone who loves travel and great food. One of the best presents you can give this year for the holidays.

I got this cookbook for my wife and I have to say I can't put it down myself. The amazing travels and stories filled in with insane food dish recipes. I'm super stoked I got this cookbook. Can't recommend it highly enough ...5 stars doesn't do it justice. A must have ~ enjoy
